‎Superbe estampe dessinée par Frances Flora Bond Palmer, communément appelée Fanny Palmer. Elle a été lithographiée, finement coloriée à la main, et publiée par Currier and Ives à New York en 1866. La scène représente une course sur le Mississippi, une nuit de pleine lune, entre les deux bateaux à vapeur le Morning Star et le Queen of the West. Tandis qu'ils naviguent à pleine puissance, des flammes et de la fumée s'échappent de leurs cheminées. Le bateau victorieux remportait un bois de cerf, qu'il était autorisé à arborer pendant un an, entre les deux cheminées à l'avant du bateau, tel qu'on peut le voir ici à l'avant du Queen of the West. Deux autres bateaux les suivent, tandis que sur la rive, un feu de joie et une petite foule d'hommes acclament et saluent les passagers. Considérées comme de grands événements, les courses entre bateaux à vapeur ou steamboats, véritables palais de bois flottants à plusieurs étages, entourés de galeries-promenade, furent fréquentes entre 1830 et 1870. Comme le décrit Mark Twain, qui grandit dans une ville au bord du fleuve et passa quatre ans comme pilote de bateau fluvial (1857-1861), l'attrait et l'excitation de la vie sur le fleuve avaient un côté presque magique, surtout à l'approche d'une course de bateaux à vapeur. Il raconte dans ses mémoires, Life on the Mississippi (1883) : «À l'époque faste de la navigation à vapeur, une course entre deux bateaux à vapeur réputés pour leur vitesse était un événement d'une importance capitale. La date était fixée plusieurs semaines à l'avance et, dès lors, toute la vallée du Mississippi était en effervescence. La politique et la météo étaient oubliées, et on ne parlait plus que de la course à venir [...] La date choisie étant arrivée et tout étant prêt, les deux grands bateaux à vapeur regagnent le fleuve et restent là, manœuvrant un moment, semblant observer le moindre mouvement de l'autre, telles des créatures sensibles ; pavillons affaissés, la vapeur refoulée hurlant à travers les soupapes de sécurité, la fumée noire s'échappant des cheminées et obscurcissant l'air. Des gens, des gens partout; les rivages, les toits, les bateaux à vapeur, les navires, en sont bondés, et vous savez que les rives du vaste Mississippi vont être bordées d'humanité de là vers le nord, douze cents miles, pour accueillir ces coureurs.» (Sachant, Introduction to Art, 2016, p. 135). En 1870, le Natchez s'opposait au Robert E. Lee dans ce qui allait devenir la plus légendaire des courses de bateaux à vapeur de l'histoire des États-Unis. Construit à Cincinnati, dans l'Ohio, en 1854, le Queen of the West servit de navire commercial jusqu'à son acquisition par le colonel Charles Ellet Jr. en 1862, qui le transforma pour en faire un navire-éperon. Il opéra conjointement avec l'escadre du Mississippi lors de la bataille des eaux brunes de l'Union contre la flotte de défense fluviale confédérée pour le contrôle du Mississippi et de ses affluents pendant la guerre de Sécession. Le Morning Star naviguait essentiellement sur le Mississippi, et assurait la liaison entre Saint-Louis dans le Missouri, et la Nouvelle-Orléans en Louisiane. La maison Currier & Ives faisait régulièrement appel à des artistes renommés de l'époque pour créer les dessins à partir desquels ses lithographies étaient réalisées. Parmi ces artistes figurait Frances Flora Bond Palmer (1812 – 1876), souvent appelée Fanny Palmer. Artiste anglaise, Palmer connut le succès aux États-Unis grâce à sa collaboration avec les deux éditeurs. Entre 1849 et 1868, elle est créditée d'environ deux cents lithographies. Elle se spécialisait dans les estampes de paysage et de genre. Parmi ses sujets figuraient des scènes de fermes rurales, des navires et des architectures américaines célèbres, des chasseurs et des paysages de l'Ouest américain. Currier et Ives furent les éditeurs de lithographies historiques les plus prolifiques et les plus populaires d'Amérique. De 1835 à 1907, la maison dirigée par Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) et James Ives (1824-1895), de New York, produisit plus de 7000 lithographies différentes sur des sujets très variés, constituant ensemble un panorama coloré de l'Amérique victorienne. Extrêmement populaires à l'époque aux États-Unis et en Europe, les estampes de Currier et Ives étaient vendues dans les librairies et les imprimeries, et vendues à la criée depuis des charrettes de colporteurs entre quinze cents et trois dollars pièce. Un large éventail de sujets était proposé, allant des natures mortes et des dessins humoristiques, des images religieuses et morales, des scènes romantiques rurales et urbaines aux portraits d'éminents hommes politiques et de célèbres chevaux de course, navires et trains. Ils publièrent également des représentations de sports et de jeux, d'incendies, de batailles et d'autres événements marquants. Currier, qui apprit l'art de la lithographie comme assistant chez Pendleton Brothers à Boston, fonda l'entreprise à New York en 1834. Ives, initialement comptable, devint associé en 1857. L'entreprise resta en activité jusqu'en 1907, bien que Currier ait pris sa retraite en 1880 et Ives en 1895. Grâce aux talents d'imprimeur de Currier et au sens aigu du goût du public d'Ives, l'entreprise devint l'entreprise de lithographie commerciale la plus prospère d'Amérique. Currier & Ives employait une équipe d'artistes, de maîtres lithographes et d'aquarellistes manuels qui, à la chaîne, répondaient à la demande de millions d'estampes. Leurs lithographies continuent d'être collectionnées avec avidité aujourd'hui. Lithographie signifie littéralement «image gravée dans la pierre». Les artistes dessinaient les images sur du calcaire bavarois spécial importé, avec des crayons de cire. L'image était «incrustée» dans la pierre par un bain d'acide, puis de l'encre était appliquée sur la pierre, qui adhérait à l'image cirée. Les impressions étaient réalisées une par une, et chacune d'elles était coloriée à la main (Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, Lithographs of Abraham Lincoln - Currier & Ives, 1929, pp. 88-89). ‎These three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art.
