Several groups are revised and many new taxa are described and figured. Because it was printed over a long period of time and several issues of the society's (Société de Physique et d'Histoire Naturelle de Genève) Mémoires, the pagination is irregular, but all the plates are numbered consecutively. A few plates and text pages with some light spotting, one plate with repairs to the margin, otherwise a very good set. Complete sets as these are very rare. Horn-Schenkling, 18945; Nissen ZBI, 3598.

Professionally rebacked preserving orig. backstrip and with the orig. printed paperlabels to spines. An orig. engraved illustration for one of the original papercovers pasted on frontboard on volume one. Boards slightly discoloured and light wear to edges. Vol. 1-2 unopened and nearly all quires in vol. 3 unopened. Also with the "Supplement-volume": Glossary to Say's Entomology. Orig. printed boards spine renewed. Some spots to boards. Old name on frontboard. Engraved frontispiece. VIII and 192 unnumbered leaves with description to plates. 54 fine engraved and handcoloured plates. Glossary 37 pp. Last leaves browned in Glossary.<br>All 4 volumes housed in custom made green slipcase and box in full cloth titlelabel with gilt lettering. � Scarce first edition of this monumental work the first scientific American entomology. "For beauty and elegance of execution this work surpasses any other that has been printed in this country" North American Review XXI p. 251. The fine plates were executed by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur and by Lucy Way Sistaire whom Say had married.<br><br>"Say's studies of insects on which he spent the greater time had few predecessors in the United States. The first book on American insects appeared in 1797 based on notes of John Abbot and studies of individual insects or groups went back as far as Paul Dudley's account of bees in 1723 and Moses Bartram's work on the seventeen-year cicada in 1767. The emphasis was on economic insects as evidenced by Thomas Jefferson's participation on a committee to study the Hessian fly in 1792. Amateurs in the United States customarely sent specimens to Europe for identification especially after the impetus given to the subject by R�amur in the six-volume "History of Insects" 1734-1742. Say's entry into entomology changed that for his published descriptions were accyrate and usable by others.He was familiar with American and European literature on insects and was a natural taxonomist showing excellent judgement in selecting the significant features of each species so that his descriptions did nor leave taxonomic confusion.
