Published in the highly esteemed series of zoological contributions edited by Grandidier (father, and later, his son) on the unique fauna and flora of Madagascar. The partly colour-printed (two or three colours) plates are wonderfully executed and have great detail.‎

‎An den österr. Chemiker u. Mineralogen Anton Schrötter von Kristelli (1802-1875). - ?Er studiert zu erst an der Genfer Akademie mit Pictet de la Rive, bevor er nach Paris an die Sorbonne ging und dort 1852 ein Lizenziat erhielt. 1854 promovierte er an der Universität Giessen. Zwischen 1854 und 1856 machte er mit Henri Peyrot eine zweijährige Forschungsreise in die Karibik und vor allem nach Mexiko. Er machte zahlreiche zoologische, geologische, hydrologische und archäologische Beobachtungen und legte grosse Probensammlungen an, die er erst in den folgenden Jahren auswertete. Er beschrieb auch die politischen Geschehnisse, wie einen US-amerikanischer Annexionsversuch in Kuba und den mexikanischen Bürgerkrieg. Seit dieser Reise schrieb er auch Berichte für das Journal de Genève. Auf seiner Rückreise besuchte er die Vereinigten Staaten, wo er den ebenfalls in der Schweiz geborenen Louis Agassiz und den Physiker Joseph Henry traf. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Genf wurde er bald ein Entomologe mit Weltruf, spezialisiert auf Hautflügler und Springschrecken. Er übergab seine Insektensammlungen dem Genfer Naturhistorischen Museum (Musée d'histoire naturel). Er hatte auch ein Bauerngut am Fuss der Voirons und schlug verschiedene agronomische Verbesserungen vor. 1858 war er Mitbegründer der Geographischen Gesellschaft von Genf, dessen Präsident er einiger Jahre lang war. 1866 bekam er die französische Ehrenlegion für seine wissenschaftliche und agronomische Leistungen. 1872 wurde er Ehrenmitglied der Entomological Society of London? (Wikipedia). --- Der in Olmütz geborene Anton Schrötter, Sohn eines Apothekers, studierte ab 1822 zunächst auf Wunsch seines Vaters in Wien Medizin, wechselte dann aber unter dem Einfluss von Friedrich Mohs zu den naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern, speziell der Mineralogie. 1827 erhielt er eine Assistentenstelle für Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Wien. 1830 wurde er Professor für Physik und Chemie am Technischen Institut Joanneum in Graz. Während eines halbjährigen Urlaubs im Jahre 1838 besuchte er chemische Institute in Göttingen, Heidelberg, Frankfurt und Paris. In Gießen machte er sich bei Justus von Liebig mit der organischen Elementaranalyse vertraut. Ab 1843 arbeitete er als Professor für technische Chemie am Polytechnischen Institut der Universität Wien und übernahm dort 1845 die Professur für allgemeine Chemie. Schrötter war neben Baumgartner, Ettingshausen und Haidinger einer der Begründer der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien und wurde 1850 ihr Generalsekretär. Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina wählte Schrötter 1856 zu ihrem Mitglied. Ab 1868 leitete er das österreichische Hauptmünzamt und wurde gleichzeitig zum Ministerialrat ernannt. Er wurde 1874 in den Ruhestand versetzt und eröffnete in seiner Wohnung ein Privatlaboratorium, in dem er Studien über Edelmetalle betrieb. 1875 starb er in Wien. Schrötter hat in seinem Leben ca. 60 wissenschaftliche Publikationen verfasst. Ab 1845 beschäftigte Schrötter sich intensiv mit Phosphor. 1848 gelang ihm der Nachweis der schon von Berzelius geäußerten Vermutung, dass roter Phosphor eine allotrope Modifikation des weißen Phosphors, nicht aber eine Phosphorverbindung ist. Schrötter wandelte weißen Phosphor durch Erhitzen in roten um, den man zeitweise Schrötterschen Phosphor nannte. Sein Verfahren zur Darstellung desselben revolutionierte die Streichholzindustrie, wo roter Phosphor schon bald als Bestandteil der Reibflächen genutzt wurde. Er war ein Organisator in Industrie und Wissenschaft sowie Berater bei den Vorbereitungen zur Novara-Expedition und zur Österreich-Ungarischen Nordpolexpedition. - Gefaltet u. mit leichten Knickspuren.‎

"For beauty and elegance of execution this work surpasses any other that has been printed in this country" North American Review XXI p. 251. The fine plates were executed by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur and by Lucy Way Sistaire whom Say had married.<br><br>"Say's studies of insects on which he spent the greater time had few predecessors in the United States. The first book on American insects appeared in 1797 based on notes of John Abbot and studies of individual insects or groups went back as far as Paul Dudley's account of bees in 1723 and Moses Bartram's work on the seventeen-year cicada in 1767. The emphasis was on economic insects as evidenced by Thomas Jefferson's participation on a committee to study the Hessian fly in 1792. Amateurs in the United States customarely sent specimens to Europe for identification especially after the impetus given to the subject by R�amur in the six-volume "History of Insects" 1734-1742. Say's entry into entomology changed that for his published descriptions were accyrate and usable by others.He was familiar with American and European literature on insects and was a natural taxonomist showing excellent judgement in selecting the significant features of each species so that his descriptions did nor leave taxonomic confusion.
