‎Dritte wesentlich erweiterte Ausgabe. - Horn-Sch. 21702. Nissen ZBI 4032. - Jakob Sturm (1771 - 1848) war der Sohn eines Nürnberger Kupferstechers. " Als nämlich seinem Vater eine Kupferplatte, die dieser zu einem entomologischen Werke von Pallas zu fertigen hatte, von dem mit der Revision des Werkes betrauten Professor und Geheimrath Schreber als ungeeignet beanstandet wurde, erhielt sie der Sohn, erst 16 Jahre alt, zur Ausführung überwiesen und führte sie, nachdem er die bezüglichen Insecten von dem Entomologen Panzer in natura sich hatte zeigen lassen, so vorzüglich aus, daß die beiden Gelehrten, in Erkennung seines ausgesprochenen Talentes als Naturzeichner, ihn für ihre speciellen Wissenschaften gewannen, Schreber für Botanik, Panzer für Zoologie. Sturm begann nun, sich selbst eine Insectensammlung anzulegen, die allmählich zu einer der größten Privatsammlungen anwuchs. Auf Grund derselben gab er 1791 seine erste Sammlung von Abbildungen heraus, ohne Text, unter dem Titel: "Insecten-Cabinet, nach der Natur gezeichnet und gestochen", wovon 4 Hefte, jedes mit 25 colorirten Kupfertafeln erschienen sind. Bald darauf wurde er auch litterarisch thätig. 1796 ließ er das erste Verzeichniß seiner Insecten-Sammlung drucken, dem infolge des Anwachsens der letzteren 1800 ein zweites, 1826 ein drittes und 1843 ein viertes, jedes Mal vergrößertes, sich anschlossen".
