brossura Le riflessioni presentate in questo libro si pongono un duplice fine. Da una parte, le radici su cui si fondano le teorie di Sorokin non possono essere sradicate, anzi devono essere rivitalizzate da parte dei sociologi, i quali praticano una scienza che nel suo statuto originario si poneva come scienza al servizio dell'umanità, onde favorirne lo sviluppo, e che necessitava della transizione dal positivismo all'analisi socioculturale; dall'altra parte, vi è la necessità di evidenziare quanto, ancora oggi, a distanza di molti anni, sia ancora valida la legge di diversificazione e polarizzazione degli effetti di calamità e quanto, nelle società colpite da disastri, prescindendo dalla loro natura, si registri sempre un "prima" e un "dopo" divenendo prioritario affrontare il problema della fuoriuscita dall'emergenza, nonché delineare le dinamiche che caratterizzano le popolazioni nel momento in cui si cerca di dare un nuovo ordine, necessario per far fronte al mutato sistema dei bisogni. Oggi, è cambiato il lessico preferendo il termine "disastro" a "calamità" ma non sono cambiati gli effetti di questi fenomeni che turbano la regolarità della vita quotidiana degli individui. E questo è vero al di là del fatto che non c'è sempre accordo tra gli studiosi su quali eventi debbano e/o possano rientrare in questa categoria.
