‎"Dans l'apparence, le livre de Gérard Namer, “Mémoire et Société”, offre une analyse serrée des textes d'Halbwachs portant sur la mémoire : Les cadres sociaux de la mémoire, La Mémoire chez tes musiciens (texte peu connu, redécouvert et mis en valeur), Topographie légendaire des Evangiles en Terre Sainte et, enfin, La Mémoire collective (ouvrage posthume et inachevé). Il présente aussi, dans la dernière partie, une application des thèses d'Halbwachs à des « terrains » : les juifs égyptiens, la déportation, la bibliothèque, le musée, les commémorations en 1944-1945. Il faut y regarder de plus près pour s'apercevoir que ce que Namer tente de construire à partir de l'oeuvre d'Halbwachs et de terrains d'enquête c'est l'ébauche, l'esquisse d'une théorie sociologique de la mémoire. (...) Dans cet essai de synthèse qu'est “Mémoire et Société”, Namer trace les étapes d'une pensée sociologique sur la mémoire. A notre avis, le grand apport de son livre est qu'il invite à ne plus partir, comme Halbwachs le faisait, des différences entre mémoire sociale (courants de pensée), mémoire collective (mémoire de groupe), mémoire culturelle (la mémoire chez les musiciens par exemple) et mémoire individuelle, mais de ce que lui Namer appelle des pratiques de mémoire. (...) Namer sociologue arrache le temps et la mémoire à l'oubli dans lequel les ont plongés l'évolutionnisme et l'empirisme, avec les notions d'évolution, de progrès, de changement social qui recouvrent tout sans jamais rien définir. C'est, en particulier, dans les « itinéraires sociaux de la mémoire » que, lorsqu'il se produit, le changement social peut apparaître."
