Ne "Le radici del pensiero", degli alberi si esaminano molteplici aspetti (struttura, strategie di accrescimento e riproduzione, gestione delle risorse, memoria biologica), che costituiscono altrettanti capitoli del libro. Il testo è impostato su base rigorosamente scientifica. Nel corso della trattazione, i "comportamenti" degli alberi vengono confrontati con quelli umani, per arrivare alla conclusione che, nonostante l'uomo sia dotato di un cervello (un indubbio vantaggio sotto molti punti di vista), gli alberi sono sorprendenti per la saggezza biologica che mettono in evidenza. Un tipo di saggezza che può rappresentare un riferimento anche per noi. Ascoltare la voce degli alberi - mettere in contatto le loro radici con le nostre - potrebbe aiutarci a vivere un'esistenza più essenziale, autentica e, soprattutto, logica.
