br. Sin dalle sue origini, il pensiero sociologico ha sempre avuto una relazione controversa con le scienze naturali. Molti hanno cercato di prendere le distanze da queste e conferire alla sociologia una sua autonomia concettuale e metodologica; altri hanno continuato a prendere a modello la fisica o la biologia - anche tenendo presente il fatto che la sociologia originerebbe da tali discipline -, al fine di eguagliarne la chiarezza metodologica e la ogget-tività dei risultati. Le teorie della complessità rappresentano il più recente di tali tentativi: costituite dalla sintesi di concetti propri della sistemica, della cibernetica e delle teorie del caos, queste hanno permesso di risolvere, o almeno di modellizzare, questioni che sfuggivano totalmente alla comprensione stessa della metodologia della scienza tradizionale. Naturale, quindi, che la medesima operazione sia stata tentata anche per le scienze sociali, con risultati però non sempre all'altezza delle aspettative. Lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di esaminare i principali tentativi effettuati di utilizzare le teorie della complessità in sociologia, evidenziandone sia le prevedibili ingenuità che spesso questa operazione ha implicato, sia le interessanti occasioni di riflessione.

First and only edition of this extremely rare set published for propaganda on "an ideal women's image" in the Republican Turkey period after the 1960 Coup d'Etat. In addition to the early period posters and brochures printed for the purpose of propaganda for women to join the defense ranks during the War of Independence, (1919-1922), the Ministry of Education continued to publish books to determine the social roles of Turkish women after the proclamation of the Republic. In the Republican era, the propaganda style on women was carried out with such books titled "How to raise children, How to be a good housewife, etc.". This set is one of the book sets including four books titled i.e. Children of Fatma, Birth preparation of Fatma, When Fatma's child was born, and How Fatma feeds her child. He entered the State Government servie in Tamil Nadu and he was retired in 2001. His duties in the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department enabled him to serve at several stations across the State. As an Extension Officer, he could have close contact with the masses, especially in rural areas, and get first-hand knowledge of the state of their lives. He gained experience in divese activities including officer administration. He was an honest official all along his career. He now feels quite nostalgic for the department that made him a mature man.Since 1970, he has taught English to students as a service and for his own pleasure. Since 1995, he has been conducting 'spoken English' classes for graduates and employees. He says that Shakespeare's sonnet no. 107 has goaded him on writing books, resulting in this debut work. This groundbreaking collection presents a significantly different portrait of the medieval and modern Indian society, literature, and the nation-state. Reporting on eighteen studies in five distinct sections spanning many centuries of Indian social history it has brought fresh insights into the emergence of innumerable sub-castes owing to various factors such as political, economic, inter-religious and intercultural. This remarkable set of reconstructions presents the reader with familiar as well as unfamiliar group and areas within the subcontinent offering fresh appraisals of the evidence and of modern historical writing. What unites them here is an overarching thesis on social formation and transformation by establishing links chronologically and thematically. It is argued that although modernizing forces entered the caste system with the advent of the European missionaries and trading companies it did not radically alter the system but the changes brought about in the Indian society remained complex. There has been conflict in the society right from the time of Buddha challenging the Vedic and Shastric traditions. We find non-Brahmin tradition as part of broader Hinduism. In British India various reformers launched social reform movements to challenge the hegemony of the upper castes and to bring about change and transformation towards the egalitarian order. Based on a wide range of published sources, archival material and field data this book is an in-depth study of the Portuguese missions and missionaries in the Tamil coast and hinterland between 1519 and 1774. It brings to light the socio-cultural interaction between the missionaries and the natives emphasizing the role of Catholic Christianity and its various institutions. In exciting and unexpected ways the book provides various dimensions of change in the Tamil society, analyzes the changes in approaches, strategies and schemes in the context of social development. Jayaseela Stephen is Professor of Maritime History and Coordinator of the UGC-Special Assistance Programme at Visva-BHarati University, Shantiniketan. He has held teaching and research appointments at University of Nebraska, Lincoln City, (1996), University of Connecticut, Storrs, (2004) USA. He is also former fellow of the Ecole Franoise d' Extreme-Orient, Paris/Pondicherry (1994-1999), editor of Revue HIstorique: Societe de l' Histoire de Pondicherry (1995-1997), former Senior Advisor to Tata Central Archives, Pune, (2000-2001) and Head of the Department of History (2001-20040. he is a Member of Executive Committee in the Indian Historical Records Commission nominated by the Government t of India. He has also co-edited (with KS Mathew) Indo-French Relations, (1999) and edited Trade and Globalisation: Europeans, Americans and Indians in the Bay of Bengal, 1511-1819 (2003); Literature, Caste and Society: The Masks and Veils (2006), Arangappa THiruvengadam Pillai Naatkurippa from 13.6.1767 to 29.12.1769, (Vol. III, in Tamil), 2006. His publications also include a large number of articles on socio-economic history of Medieval South India, Maritime history of Early Modern India in various journals and edited volumes. He won the best book prize for his book Muthu Vijaya Thiruvengadam Pillai Naatkurippu, 1794-1796, in 1999 (in Tamil which deals with diary writing in Tamil during the Eighteenth Century).
