‎Literature, Caste and Society: the Masks and Veils [Hardcover]‎

‎This groundbreaking collection presents a significantly different portrait of the medieval and modern Indian society, literature, and the nation-state. Reporting on eighteen studies in five distinct sections spanning many centuries of Indian social history it has brought fresh insights into the emergence of innumerable sub-castes owing to various factors such as political, economic, inter-religious and intercultural. This remarkable set of reconstructions presents the reader with familiar as well as unfamiliar group and areas within the subcontinent offering fresh appraisals of the evidence and of modern historical writing. What unites them here is an overarching thesis on social formation and transformation by establishing links chronologically and thematically. It is argued that although modernizing forces entered the caste system with the advent of the European missionaries and trading companies it did not radically alter the system but the changes brought about in the Indian society remained complex. There has been conflict in the society right from the time of Buddha challenging the Vedic and Shastric traditions. We find non-Brahmin tradition as part of broader Hinduism. In British India various reformers launched social reform movements to challenge the hegemony of the upper castes and to bring about change and transformation towards the egalitarian order. The books into the issues of identity, power conversion and gender inequality. About The Author:- S. ‎Educational Development of Scheduled Castes: Looking Ahead [Hardcover]‎

‎Recognising the role of education as an effective instrument for bringing about changes in Scheduled Castes in their socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions in an elaborate programme of pre-Matric and post-Matric scholarships, reservations of seats in the schools and colleges, establishement of hostels and ashram schools and many other beneficial schemes are in operation for the last five decades. It is of considerable interest to find out how these facilities have been actually beneficial for them and what is the level of their progress in the field of education. This book is aimed at knowing the truth in this regard. In fact, the educational progress of the Scheduled Castes suffers from two deficiencies; first, they lag very much behind the rest of the population in their educational achievement and second, among them some group have made far more, rapid progress than others. The benefits of the special educational facilities for the Scheduled Castes have not accrued equitable to the most backward communities among them. As a result, severe interand intra-caste and intra-and intra-state differentials have given rise to a separate class among them. This study based on the data, identifies the castes and the caste-groups which have benefited due to differential utilization of the incentives and other protective programmes and suggests measures to bring about an all round educational development of the Scheduled Castes. A bold and pragmatic step is called for to give a new orientation to the present policy of educational development of the Scheduled Castes, if we are really interested in ushering in equality through education. About The Author:- S.K. Chatterjee retired from the Indian Police Service, and an anthropologist by training and inclination, has kept himself in touch with the burning social issues. ‎Social Change and Public Administration in India [Hardcover]‎

‎ABOUT THE BOOK:-Independent India opted for a parliamentary form of democracy for its governance. It was to be a polity based on the principles of democracy, socialism and secularism enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution. It was a polity to further the norms of equality, freedom and fraternity. It claimed for the establishment of an egalitarian social order committed to social justice and brings about social change in the fractional social set up. Since the system has been in operation for the last six decades or so, it is pertinent to look into as to how far we have been able to achieve the desired goals. The present book makes an attempt to provide the readers the broad framework on the concerned issues. The book covers the theme through the articles contributed by eminent academies on the question of social change particularly with focus on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the weaker sections of the society.
