The study is based on research in the late 1980s, on fifteen months of field research in 130 localities in the Cross River region between 1998 and 2001, and a short trip in 2008 as well as on research in colonial and mission archives and specialized libraries ... PURCHASING CULTURE investigates the emergence of complex purchasable associations in the Cross River region of southwest Cameroon and southeast Nigeria. These associations emerged in the context of the growing transatlantic trade and were disseminated from the direction of the Atlantic coast to the hinterland. They diffused (and still continue to diffuse) transethnically across the region, ignoring linguistic and national boundaries, and forming translocal networks of owners of the same institutions. The study documents the histories of cult associations and their dissemination by purchase and sale which includes the transfer of immaterial property rights. This mode of dissemination differs substantially from that of secret societies in the West. ... With its central focus on the purchase of cult associations, the study explores the transaction of rights in the ownership of the institutions and their performances. The purchase includes the acquisition of rights in ownership, performance, secret sign languages, and knowledge of the associations' functioning. Owners of associations have developed a local form of a copyright system with which they protect their performances. Associations form a substantial part of conferring prestige on individual members in the Cross River cultures up until the present time. They function prominently in present day debates among the people in the villages as well as the migrants in towns. The study contributes to the regional history of small scale societies and their pre-colonial organization of trade in West and Central 'Africa, to theories of associations and of the diffusion of culture; and to the role of intellectual property in the context of globalization. ... Mit 26 Abbildungen im Text --- Besprechungen. - Abgebildet sind Gegenstände wie: Stirnplatte; Rassel; Flöte; Vogel; Hut; Kanumodell; Löffel; Maske; Helm; Visier; Axt; Stäbchenpanzer; Brettchenpanzerteil; Brettchenpanzer / u.a. --- Die Malaspina-Expedition, die auf den Schiffen Descubierta und Atrevida eine Fahrt um Amerika und in die Südsee unternahm, hat im Jahre 1791 die Nordwestküste Amerikas zur endgültigen Klarstellung der Frage der Durchfahrt geprüft. Die Umkehr erfolgte bei der Insel Montague. Obschon mehrfach Eingeborene unterwegs getroffen wurden, haben doch wahrscheinlich nur in Mulgrave (Yakutatbucht) und Nutka Handelsbeziehungen mit den Nordweststämmen bestanden, die zur Beobachtung der Menschen und zum Erwerb von Objekten führten. Letztere befinden sich heute im Museo Arqueologico zu Madrid und sind bisher von der Wissenschaft fast unbeachtet geblieben. Die mitgebrachten Objekte konnten ebenso wie die umfangreichen Akten der Expedition in Vergessenheit geraten, weil Malaspina sofort nach der Rückkehr beim Hof in Madrid in Ungnade fiel und nach jahrelanger Kerkerhaft schließlich in seine Heimat Italien zurückkehren mußte, wo er bald darauf starb. Um die Expeditionsakten bemühte sich Martin Fernandez de Navarrete; es gelang, sie im neugegründeten Deposito Hidrografico unterzubringen, dessen Bestände sich heute im Museo Naval (Marineministerium zu Madrid) befinden. Navarrete war es auch, der die ersten kurzen Bemerkungen über die Malaspina-Expedition in seine Introduccion zur Relacion .... Sutil y Mexicana aufnahm. Noch kürzer, aber mit warmen Worten, gedachte bald darauf Alexander von Humboldt der Expedition und ihres Leiters, ausgehend von "einem Tagebuch, das an Bord der Atrevida gehalten worden war". Wie Humboldt feststellen konnte, ließ sich der größte Teil der Seekarten, die seit 1799 in Madrid erschienen waren, auf Malaspinas Resultate zurückführen; allerdings war statt Malaspinas Namen nur der seiner Schiffe genannt. Ein etwas längerer Aktenauszug - gegen den Gesamtbestand der Expeditionsakten immer noch verschwindend kurz - stammt von einem der Offiziere Malaspinas und wurde von Eustaquio Fernändez de Navarrete im "Examen Historico-Critico. ..." der Reisen Maldona dos, Fucas und Fontes als Dokument Nr. 6 wiedergegeben. Die "Disertacion ..." Malaspinas selbst über Maldonado erschien hierin als Dokument Nr. 2. ? (Seite (173))‎
