1880. Women's Education Three handwritten notebooks belonging to Belle Fraister of Iowa. Iowa Schoolgirl Handwritten Notebook Archive of 3 Notebooks. Iowa 1880-1890. Notebooks range from 8" x 7" and 8" x 7.5". 146 pages total many blank. Decorated pictorial wrappers. Within these notebooks she writes detailed notes for subjects including history English penmanship and arithmetic. Based on the subjects she writes notes for we believe she may be in late middle school to early high school. In her designated history notebook she details short historical summaries of various states writing in part for Georgia "Time - 1733" "Cause - Refuge for the poor and persecuted" "Place - Savannah" "People - English" "1752 - Geogia became the first Royal Province". She dedicates one notebook to practicing her penmanship repeating many letters words and phrases. On one page she writes phrases including "Promise little but do much" and "Union is strength" repeatedly. On another page she practices the her calligraphy strokes. often in various scribbles. In another notebook she intricately writes about grammar pronunciation inflection pitch synonyms and more. One page features a small newspaper clipping highlighting the death of John G. Saxe famous poet lecturer and attorney. Beneath this clipping is a brief written biography of John. All notebooks are bears stamps of the original stationary store. A detailed written account of a young schoolgirl's education in Iowa in the late 19th century this archive is very good condition. unknown
