‎Instituteur remplaçant, Jules Celma effectue pendant l'année 1968-1969 quatre remplacements d'une durée de quelques semaines à quelques mois dans diverses classes. A chaque fois il essaye de créer les conditions propices à susciter l'expression non autocensurée de ses petits élèves. Il tente de créer une atmosphère de liberté dans la classe. Selon les cas les résultats sont variés. Héritant de classes habituées à des instituteurs pratiquant une pédagogie ordinaire (c'est à dire autoritaire et castratrice) il rencontre pas mal de difficultés avant d'obtenir un peu de spontanéité de la part de ses élèves déjà bien dressés. Tout en s'interdisant d'orienter artificiellement les sujets de discussion. Son livre est le récit de ces différents épisodes de remplacement, à partir de notes reproduisant les dialogues des enfants, des poèmes ou histoires qu'ils ont écrits et les dessins les plus intéressants qu'ils ont produits, représentants le plus souvent des personnages nus (avec leur organes génitaux bien mis en évidence), dans des activités scatologiques (pipi-caca). Il recueille également des dessins plus communs de scènes de guerre – qui eux ne choquent personne ! Le livre reproduit également quelques réactions contradictoires (courriers de lecteur) reçues suite à la publication de son expérience dans la revue “Le fait public” (février 1970). Après ces quelques expériences Jules Celma ne fut plus employé par l'"Educastrons Nationale". Il fut même condamné pour "outrages aux bonnes moeurs" en 1971 après qu'un de ses textes, relatant son expérience et les leçons qu'il en a tiré, ait été utilisé comme tract par des lycéens en colère. Le livre reproduit aussi les témoignages favorables d'éminents scientifiques (Bernard Pagès, Gilles Deleuze et Henry Chambron) interrogés par les juges.‎
