1690. Pen and brown ink on cream laid paper 3 x 8 inches 76 x 230 mm the full sheet. In good condition with some edge wear and losses at all but the lower right corner. Adhered to a 19th century laid paper matrix at the corners. During Medici festivals it was common to have a credenza-a massive tiered sideboard displaying hundreds of pieces of silver and gold plate to signal the wealth of the family to visiting dignitaries. These objects are piled together in a "horror vacui" style filling all available space which suggests that they are either meant to be seen as a pile of "spoils" or riches on a parade float. This image may also be a pattern sheet for an engraver. unknown

1690. Pen and brown ink on cream laid paper 3 x 8 inches 76 x 230 mm the full sheet. In good condition with some edge wear and losses at all but the lower right corner. Adhered to a 19th century laid paper matrix at the corners. On the verso is a similar decorative design in brown ink. This work is a classic example of an "apparato" design. In the 16th and 17th centuries artists were frequently commissioned to design ephemeral architecture and "festival machines" for royal entries weddings or religious processions. These festival machines were often made of temporary materials like wood plaster and gilded papier-mâché to be used once during a city-wide celebration and then dismantled. This image may also be a pattern sheet for an engraver. unknown

Paper is braced on the verso with two pages from a mid 19th century book with illustrations by C.Perrin. One image depicts a scene of a group of soldiers representing the Holy Roman Empire causing a ruckus in a tavern named for King Richard the Lionhearted. Soldiers in what appears to be 18th century uniform bicker one drawing his sword in defense a lady appearing at his side the other standing at the foot of an empty throne. Perhaps a then modern depiction of King Richard refusing to show deference to the Holy Roman Empire. unknown

The artist's use of a dark prepared ground recalls the work of Barbara Regina Dietsch and her family. A search of Nissen's index of artists reveals one possible name: the Swiss artist Johann Emmanuel Wyss 1782-1837. However the maturity and assurance shown in the present drawing would seem to rule him out: he could have been no older than nine in April 1791. unknown

Also includes chapters on The Land Beyond the Mountains; The Native Races; Trails and Transportation; Establishing a New Frontier; Means of Defense; The Struggle for the Mastery; Homes and Homelife; Before the Rule of Fashion; Manners and Customs; Remedies and Superstitions; Songs and Legends; Locating Mills; The Beginning of Other Industries; Organization and Government; The Early Churches; Schools and First Newspapers and the Coming of the Railroad. The writing of the history of pioneer Marion County has been of great interest and profit to the Class and has awakened a most wholesome interest throughout the county. It has kindled a friendly family feeling tracing back our ancestors to neighbors who lived side by side through perils and privations. It has impressed upon our minds the rugged sterling valor and virtues that secured for us the comforts and refinements of which they never even dreamed. James Otis Watson was the real pioneer in West Virginia coal development. After the first railroad was constructed through Fairmont in 1852 he immediately opened up the first coal mine called the American Coal Company. In 1852 Mr. Watson built a suspension bridge over the waters of the Monongahela River connecting Fairmont and Palatine. Marion County proper was created by an act of the Virginia Assembly on January 14 1842 from parts of Monongalia and Harrison Counties and was named after General Francis Marion of American Revolutionary War fame known to history as "The Swamp Fox". The year 1852 was an eventful time in Marion County's history starting with the great flood on Monday April 5. Heavy rains the day before caused the Monongahela and West Fork Rivers to rise at rate of 5 feet per hour until Tuesday afternoon when the water reached 43 feet above its normal level. The greatest damage was sustained on the West Fork where over 40 houses and buildings were swept away and floated past Fairmont. The flood also damaged the railroad which was in the final stages of being completed. By June 23 the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was completed connecting Fairmont to the west and to large cities in the east like Baltimore. The railroad required the building of a bridge to cross the Monongahela River about 1 mile west of Fairmont. This was achieved by building a massive iron bridge spanning 650 feet and lifted 35 feet above the water. The third major event of the year 1852 was the completion of the Fairmont and Palatine suspension bridge connecting Fairmont to what was then the town of Palatine. The bridge was built under the direction of James L. Randolph assistant engineer of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; at a cost of about thirty thousand dollars. Marion was one of fifty Virginia counties that were admitted to the Union as the state of West Virginia on June 20 1863 at the height of the Civil War. In the months that followed West Virginia's counties were divided into civil townships with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts. Da un dipinto di Paolo VeroneseBell’esemplare, impresso su carta vergata coeva, completo dei margini bianchi, in ottimo stato di conservazione.La tavola è una della 24 dell’opera dal titolo “Titiani Vecelli, Pauli Caliarii, Jacobi Robusti, et Jacobi de Ponte opera selectiora” edita da J. B. Jackson nel 1745.La stampa è tratta dal dipinto di Paolo Caliari, detto il Veronese (1528-1588) per la cassa dell’organo della chiesa di S. Sebastiano, a Venezia, realizzato tra il 1558 e il 1560: le portelle dell’organo, chiuse, mostrano la “Presentazione di Gesù al Tempio”, mentre sul retro, visibile quando lo strumento è in uso, appare la scena della “Probatica piscina”. After Paolo Veronese.Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, white margins, in very good condition.Published as 1 of 24 prints and originally issued in portfolio with title: “Titiani Vecelli, Pauli Caliarii, JacobiRobusti, et Jacobi de Ponte opera selectiora”The plate is after an organ shutter of ca. 1588 painted by Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) for the Church of San Sebastiano, Venice. In 1558, Paolo designed the organ and painted its external shutters with the Presentation of Christ and the internal ones with a Pool of Bethesda (1560). The Presentation represents the bringing of the infant Jesus by Mary and Joseph to the Temple in Jerusalem to be 'consecrated to the Lord.' The Jewish rite of the 'purification' of the mother was celebrated simultaneously and involved the sacrifice of doves or pigeons and incorporated a procession of candles, both of which are portrayed by Veronese. The painted and actual architecture of Paolo's organ in San Sebastiano are coordinated so that, whether the shutters are open or closed, painted architecture continues the organ’s exterior architecture in both perspective and vocabulary.
