Publishers Weekly Grymes who manages a division of a social services corporation and Stanton a human resources administrator offer a carefully reasoned study which should prove useful to women. Their two basic premises are: although the balance of power is shifting the American workplace is a man's world; and by nature or nurture men and women are different. Although the authors maintain that this book is not intended as a how-to guide the dozens of case histories they adduce will surely help women to overcome their inclinations to be too deferential too accommodating and too sensitive to the male ego. Grymes and Stanton here confront difficult situations like those involving clients who expect special favors. They also deal with sexual harassment but only as part of the larger picture of gender harassment. Jan. Library Journal The authors who are longtime managers describe the male ego as the behavior that results from ``a strong need to maintain a sense of superiority and control.'' It may be expressed covertly by ignoring or downplaying women's contributions or overtly through sexual harassment and exclusion from decision-making processes. The authors are more concerned with ``how come'' than ``how to''; their extensive interviews with women illustrate a wide range of strategies for coping with gender-based conflicts about style authority and expectations. Though the authors hold out the promise of new management styles that make use of women's intuition and collaborative strengths many of their examples make it clear that ``barriers to success are real for women who expect to exert power.'' L’auteur souligne en tête de son travail qu’il s’agit du droit officiel, du droit voulu par le législateur, et dont s’éloigne encore beaucoup le droit vécu par de nombreux secteurs de la population. […] Il est pourtant permis de souligner que l’ouvrage présente un intérêt plus large. Des divers États africains, le Sénégal est un de ceux qui depuis longtemps se sont le plus préoccupés d’élaborer un droit qui, sensible aux valeurs africaines traditionnelles, soit pourtant facteur du développement économique, « créateur d’avenir ».
