Zaandam 1753. 8vo. for the author by Jan Broekhuysen Contemporary decorated paper wrappers preserved in half cloth chemise and matching slipcase. 28 96 pp. Extremely rare first edition of a list of Dutch data concerning the whaling trade in and around Greenland compiled by Gerrit van Sante 1728-1779. The book was designed with blank spance to add new data in the years following 1753. The present copy has been updated probably by the first owner till the year 1761. Besides the names of the commanders for every Dutch voyage to Greenland and the Davis Strait and the names of the directors for whom they sailed it also includes an annual record of the number of whales caught tonnes of blubber and barrels of whale oil both for each commander individually and for the industry as a whole. "Van Sante understood completely the enormous economic importance of whaling for the Netherlands and mentions the results of every voyage of every ship" Catalogue library of G.J. Honig. "Greenland" is broadly interpreted to include the waters around Spitsbergen and Jan Mayen Island and the Davis Strait fleets fishing between Greenland and America are not separately recorded until 1719. With manuscript owner's inscription the warrant signature of the author on the back of the title-page and manuscript additions throughout. Description of the Retreat an Institution Near York
York: W. Alexander 1813. First octavo edition. Octavo leaves 129 x 210 mm. There was also a quarto edition in 1813 generally described as a large-paper copy. Collating: xx 227 1 page errata; complete including frontis and two folding plates. Contemporary calf rebacked to style with gilt and five raised bands to spine. Generally a bit shelfworn and rubbed but a tight square copy. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Original owner's notes on recto and verso of title page in ink: "Purchased at.8 Sept 1821. Visited the Retreat Saturday aftern. 8 September 1821.with cleanly appearance & admirable arrangement of buildings the Inmates looked far happier than could have been expected. The Matron & her husband have the most benevolent countenances that we had ever beheld." Light scattered foxing throughout else unmarked. An account of the groundbreaking work of the Tuke family and the Society of Friends for improving the care and dignity with which mental illness was treated.<br /> <br /> At a time when the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness was often inhumane William Tuke stepped forward in 1796 to found The Retreat. Its goal was to create safe pleasing and dignified conditions for those being institutionalized; and from its inauguration The Retreat kept its doors open to public visitors who may want to witness and document the conditions of its campus and patients. In the present work William's grandson Samuel Tuke publicizes the institution's "internal economy of management" as well as its "mild system of treatment." Transparency is key to continued progress Tuke asserts; and he wants the Retreat's successes to assist in further advances in the field. "The interests of humanity and science alike call upon us to communicate freely the discoveries we make or the failures which happen to us.If persons engaged in the management of the insane were more generally to publish the results of their observation we might reasonably hope that the causes of this obscure and affecting disorder would receive some illustration." While William Tuke's work remains revolutionary in improving method of caring for the mentally ill Samuel Tuke's book "helped popularise the approach.to use the moral treatment method for restoring self-esteem and self-control in individuals" suffering from a range of ailments Quaker World. The first volume of a pioneer American health journal published from 1829-33. It features a selection of fascinating perspectives on medicine including analyses of the effects on health of headwear wine and malt liquor consumption mealtimes and water drinking among other things as well as considerations of race and longevity quacks mothering and more. On tobacco: "'A Victim of the Weed' is desirous of knowing whether he can at once abandon his pipe and segars or must part company in a gradual manner. Our advice is to desist immediately and entirely from the use of tobacco in every form and in any quantity however small" 220. On race: "The differences in this respect are primitive in the different races; the mucous body or varnish which constitutes the layer between the true skin beneath and the outer covering or cuticle being white or nearly so in the European or Caucasian races; yellowish in the Mongul or African; and black in the African" 146. On the education of girls: "Under twelve years of age it should be an invariable rule that the hours of close application should never exceed those of amusement and exercise" 267. It was followed by another M.Phil. in Social Sciences, Post Gratuate Diplomas in Labour Law and Public Administration and a course on Sustainable Development from TERI. An author of three books and Co-editor of one, he has 300 articles to his credit.He has kept interests alive in writing, photography, disaster management and philanthropy. Significant posts held by him are: D.D.O., D.C., Resident Commissioner, and head of departments, such as, Home, Tourism, Transport, Commerce & Industry, Science & Technology, Irrigation, Social Justice & Pollution Control Board. He has also served as Director, MHA, J.S, NHRC and Project Director of a World Bank project in Ministry of DoNER. Closing his innings of 35.3 years, he was the Chief Secretary, Sikkim for 4.4 years, the longest so far. Among his notable contributions are construction of first airport of state and resumption of Nathu La border trade after 43 years. He is vigorously pursuing first rail link to the state. He is qualified to express his views through his articles, impressions and poems in this book. It also has poems and stories penned by Ankoor, his only child, who is no more.
