Due volumi in-8° (24,2 x 17,1 cm), pp. con numerazione continua XVI, 976; XII, 977-2202, (2), legatura editoriale con titoli al dorso. I volumi non presentano sovraccoperta, non sappiamo se prevista o meno per questa edizione. Con complessive trenta tavole fuori testo, con numerazione romana (VI al volume primo, XXIV al volume secondo), di illustrazioni a colori e in bianco e nero e centinaia di figure e immagini fotografiche in bianco e nero nel testo. Qualche lieve, piccolo, segno d'umido al taglio di testa e a quello davanti. Al volume secondo: alcune piccole, leggere abrasioni ai margini bianchi di poche pagine, dovute alla rimozione di aderenze tra le pagine, aderenze provocate dall'azione dell'umidità sulla carta lucida del volume; lievi segni d'umido alla carta di guardia anteriore e alla prima pagina bianca; un piccolo strappo, senza perdite, ben rimarginato con filmoplast, nel margine esterno dei fogli con le pagine 1045-1046, 1139-1140, 2009-2010 e nel margine inferiore del foglio con le pagine 1081-1082, in tutti i casi, lontano dal testo. Alle pagine 338-369 del volume primo e alle pagine 1083-1088, qualche lieve segno lasciato dalla cancellatura di alcune sottolineatue a matita. Per il resto, molto ben conservato.
