Private Library Plate FPD Slight toning else content appears as unblemished with very good green cloth covered boards displaying minimal surface/edge wear with Poor DJ displaying major surface/edge wear as shown. Held together by tape.

Many of my books are from the 19th Century. Books were not written in at that time instead an index card with info. Am enclosing the one found in this book for you. Enjoy.

Pearl S. Buck won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1938 she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces. This is the 13th printing of her amazing autobiography that contrasts her life growing up in China with life in the United States.

Kirkus Review: A memoir from the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. "Not only Buck's most important book but—on many counts—her best book"
Often regarded as one of Pearl S. Buck's most significant works My Several Worlds is the memoir of a major novelist and one of the key American chroniclers of China. Buck who was born to missionary parents in 1892 spent much of the first portion of her life in China experiencing the Boxer Rebellion first hand and becoming involved with the society with an intimacy available to few outside observers. The book is not only an important reflection on that nation's modern history but also an account of her re-engagement with America and the intense activity that characterized her life there from her prolific novel-writing to her loves and friendships to her work for abandoned children and other humanitarian causes. As alive with incident as it is illuminating in its philosophy My Several Worlds is essential reading for travelers and readers alike. As she grows into a lovely provocative young woman Peony falls in love with the family's only son. However tradition forbids them to wed. How she resolves her love for him and her devotion to her adoptive family unfolds in this profound tale based on true events in China over a century ago."The conflicts inherent in the Chinese and Jewish temperament are delicately and intricately traced with profound wisdom and delicate understanding in this tale.
Pearl S. Buck 1892-1973 was an American author best known for her historical fiction set in China. Her novel The Good Earth won the Pulitzer Prize and in 1938 she was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Buck's works set in China come from her first-hand experience living there. Her parents were missionaries in China but returned to the U.S. for Pearl's birth. When Pearl was five months old they all returned to China where Pearl went to school. She left China in 1911 to go to school in the U.S. but returned in 1914 where she married and moved to Suzhou in Anhui Province the setting for her House of Earth trilogy.

In the 1920s Buck began publishing stories in various magazines including Nation The Chinese Recorder Asia and Atlantic Monthly. In 1930 she published her first novel with the John Day Company entitled East Wind West Wind. Ultimately she would go on to have a very successful and prolific writing career publishing over seventy novels.

Sons is the second book the House of Earth trilogy sequel to the Pulitzer-Prize winning The Good Earth. The book continues the story of a Chinese family in Anhwei covering the events following the death of the patriarch.

This copy is in Good condition. There is some fading staining and minor wear to the fabric covering the boards. There is some movement in the spine and binding but all pages remain firmly attached. Talk About Russia with Masha Scott. 1945 First Edition Author-Signed Presentation/ Association Frank Laubach of Laubach Literacy
Nw York: The John Day Company 1945. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Near Fine; see scans and description. New York: The John Day Company 1945. A very rare First Edition of Pearl S. Bucks' 'Talk About Russia with Masha Scott' signed and inscribed by the author on the first free endpaper to Frank Laubach the noted Christian missionary and founder in 1955 of Laubach Literacy after having previously founded the Each One Teach One literacy program in 1915 in the Philippines. In 2002 Laubach Literacy merged with Literacy Volunteers of America Inc. to form ProLiteracy Worldwide. 12mo russet boards black spine imprinting 128 pp. Near Fine - very; lightly touched at spine ends and corner otherwise quite flawless in every way. No jacket present but it is reasonably likely that this chapbook title was issued without jacket. Talk About Russia with 'Masha Scott' is a non-fiction - but Pearl Buck style readable - exploration at that time 1945 of the grassroots people of Russia with and from her good friend Scott. Likely as collectible an example as any now extant and available. Inscription is undated but would have been between 1945 and 1970 when Laubach passed away most likely circa the former. Extraordinarily rare title in any physical form. Ships in a new sturdy protective box of course; not a bag. L202

The John Day Company hardcover
