‎An exhibition in the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto, 19 April-30 June 1991.This commemoration of Gill's life and work is drawn primarily from a private collection in Toronto formed by J. Kemp Waldie, and also contains items from the Fisher Library and the Library of the University of Waterloo. It illustrates the varied aspects of Gill's career, with special emphasis on his graphic art and book illustration. The catalogue, by Alan Horne, Richard Landon, and Guy Upjohn won a first place award from the Rare Books and Manuscripts Sections of the American Library Association, and two design awards from the National Composition and Prepress Association. In a lavish full brown morocco binding with five raised bands and ornate gilt stamping to spine borders on covers wide turn-ins and beautifully patterned endsheets; all edges gilt. Near Fine with a light amount of rubbing to joints spines lightly faded a scuff to the front cover of Volume II and small former owner bookplates of noted collector Abel E. Berland to the front pastedowns. Pine's Latin text was based on Talbot's 1699 edition and is remarkable for being entirely illustrated with engraved copper plates throughout the text. This unusual book is a very early example of a graphic novel told entirely in engraved woodcut illustrations without text except for an introduction and a postscript �A review of Block Books and Stories in Woodcuts. � It shows/tells the fictionalized story of Bikini Island in the South Seas and the devastation that came to its inhabitants at the end of WWII with the advent of the nuclear age. The woodcuts are striking and graphic sharp and clear in a recognizably mid-century style quite reminiscent of Rockwell Kent who lends his name and introduction to the book. Laid in is a period gift envelope with one sheeted folded to make a 4 page note addressed to Miss Jennie Baird - Present dated Wednesday May 14th and signed Sincerely L. L. Watson. The letter explains the "peculiar circumstances" of the gift - Aunt Let Lauretta is on her deathbed and is gifting this lovely book and a bar of soap to her friend Jennie whose gifts of flower bouquets have cheered her in her demise - "God's flowers Dear dear Jennie; oh that the graces of the spirit may bloom in her heart." The final 2 end pages bear small pin holes from where the letter was pinned in at one time.
