Ex-lib. with institutional labels on spine and endpapers occasional institutional inkstamps in contents not affecting plates. Spine and front board detached binding heavily worn text leaves lightly soiled. Plates fine with the exception of No. 13 which bears a very small stain and a larger one in the margin. Good plus. The scarce collection of exquisite engravings of city views of Antwerp by artist and master etcher and engraver Joseph Linning. The son of Sir John William Lubbock (1803-1865) an important astronomer and mathematician, Sir John Lubbock (1834-1913) was an influential English banker, statesman, and naturalist. His scientific contributions were in entomology and anthropology and include this work which was long used as a textbook; and the popular Ants, Bees, and Wasps (1882) and The Pleasures of Life (1887-89). Original decoratively mottled full leather bindings. Spines worn, but some gilt remains. Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39-65 CE), was an important Roman poet, born in Cordoba. One of the outstanding figures of the Imperial Latin period, his youth and speed of composition set him apart from others. The Pharsalia is an epic poem on the Roman Civil War. It is considered the greatest epic in Latin after the Aeneid. It depicts the Battle of Pharsalus (48 BC) where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey. Lucan's poetic talent apparently aroused the jealously of the Emperor Nero. After the publication of Pharsalia the Emperor forbade him to write, or even plead in the courts, and then later compelled him to commit suicide for alleged treason. The engraved plates in this edition are mostly by the famous French engraver and book illustrator, Hubert Francois Gravelot (1699-1733). The original art was by: Antoine-Jean Duclos; Emanuel Jean Nepomucene Ghendt; Noel Le Mire; Francois Denis Nee; Jean Francois Rousseau; and Jean-Baptiste Blaise Simonet. Red leather backed with black cloth boards. Gilt spine titling and front decoration gilt top-edge rag paper untrimmed on the fore and bottom edges. Copper plate engravings. Very good set. The majority of corners bumped with some edgewear and some degree of fraying to most of the spine tips. Each spine dimmed with some drying of the leather and rubbing; a few nicks to Volumes 1 5 and 9. The lower half Volume 12's front joint split its spine tip also eroding otherwise very good. Some light rippling where leather meets cloth on a few of the earlier volumes mostly in the front. The interior is very nice with foxing mostly seen only on the endpapers of a few volumes. Ogni acquaforte (il foglio misura cm 33x26) reca la firma di Decroix a matita, e il titolo del ritratto. Lo stesso Decroix (Lille 1878-1936 Parigi) fu prigioniero di guerra e passò due anni in un campo in Germania, liberato nel 1916 raggiunse la familgia a Berna per poi trasferirsi a Parigi. Assai raro.

VG but with soiling to covers where glassine was lacking minor age toning to extremities of some pages not bad overall a tight copy that could have been stored better. The front cover is slightly cattywampus from the two extra sets of engravings being inserted in the front of the book as might be expected. Printed wraps with glassine remnants on inside flaps. 24 pp. 15 engravings etchings withing the text and two extra sets of these illustrations each set representing a different state are included only 20 such sets were issued of the overall edition of 430 copies. Text is in French. The book itself has been printed on Imperial Japon and the extra engraving printed on Imperial Japon and on Holland Van Gelder it appears from the colophon and limitation at the rear of the book. Quite rare as a result of this limited configuration. Each set of plates is wrapped in glassine and the extremities of these plates show age-toning or light soiling. of a work on medicine each of three compartments in the centres are scenes extolling the virtues of moderation in food and drink while the cook prepares and the waiter serves and of prudence and fortitude in the sick bed and at an amputation while at the corners are figures emblematic of Fire Air Water and Earth 1�" x 5�" 3.8cm x 13.2cm and 2" x 5�" 4.9cm x 13.4cm plus small margins no place no date These engravings are a smaller version of those in the title page 30.5cm x 19.5cm to the 'De Efficaci Medicina Libri III' of Marco Aurelio Severino Professor at Naples engraved by Matthias Merian folio Frankfurt 1646. In the latter the domestic scene of moderation present here is replaced by Severino's portrait. Severino's treatise is commonly bound with Wilhelm Fabricius of Hilden's 'Opera Omnia' of the same place and date. unknown
