Bishop James writer of verses; engravings by various eminent artists
The Painted Picture Play-Book. Illustrated with upwards of Three Hundred Coloured Pictures and an Explanatory Verse to Each.
London: Dean and Son. First edition presumed. Paper on boards. Fair. N.d. circa 1850s. Folio 13.5 by 10 inches. Not paginated 33 leaves including title page with printing on only one side per leaf. Wonderful hand-colored illustrations by unnamed artists but many with the qualiy of Tenniel. Some form part of a loose story narrative and others are part of a looser verse bond. Particularly appealing are the feline illustrations which come in several places most notably part of "The Cat Party". The leaves do not appear to have been bound in a proper order as this particular narrative moves in reverse. It is all somewhat chaotic yet charmingly so. Also a stand-out is the imagery of the "London Toy Warehouse". While some of the animal imagery is straightforward and pedestrian this is more than dominated by that which is humorous unexpected and inspired. The book was surely intended both to instruct and amuse and it is this twin objective that underlies its dual tone. The boards which are covered by illustrated paper pasted on are soiled and chewed up in the corners and the edges are rough. There are a fair number of closed tears inside near the front that were less than deftly repaired with tape some of which remains. Some soilage throughout. Still most of the imagery remains bright and appealing.

Dean and Son hardcover

BOCCACCIO Giovanni; edited by FOSCOLO Ugo; engravings by STOTHARD Thomas:
DECAMERONE DI MESSER GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO
Londra: Guglielmo Pickering. 1825. First Foscolo edition. First Foscolo edition. One of just 12 sets containing 11 engraved plates by Stothard in the proof state printed on India paper. Inscribed by the publisher William Pickering. Bound by Hayday in full fine crushed dark green morocco with gilt ruling and decoration to the boards and spine titles in gilt to the spine gilt dentelles and gilt to all page edges. Printed by S. & R. Bentley on fine laid paper. A very good copy with only minor rubbing and bumping to the boards. The contents with the armorial bookplate of Hugh Perkins to the front pastedown of each volume a previous owner's bookplate to the front free endpaper of volume one and some offsetting/toning to the pages either side of the plates are otherwise clean throughout. A beautiful set. Inscribed by the publisher William Pickering to the front endpaper of volume one "This copy contains a set of the plates by Stothard of which only 12 were taken upon India paper before the letters W. Pickering". A wonderful early nineteenth century edition of this masterpiece of early Italian literature notable for its lengthy introductory essay 'Discorso storico sul testo del Decamerone Foscolo' by the Italian poet Ugo Foscolo 1778-1827. Whilst living in London during the last eleven years of his life Foscolo a popular figure in fashionable literary and political circles produced several well-received dissertations on the central figures of Italian literature including Boccaccio Dante and Petrarch. His prefatory dedication to the present work is to the Whig politician and bibliophile Roger Wilbraham. In it Foscolo suggests that this new edition would make a fine addition to Wilbraham's collection of Italian literature which contained many of the rarest works of both ancient and modern poetry and romance and upon which Foscolo himself had drawn during the production of his writings. A superb copy of the important first Foscolo edition very scarce with the proof engravings. For an account see Vincent 'Ugo Foscolo: An Italian in Regency England' 1953. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. Londra: Guglielmo Pickering. 1825 hardcover

Boyd Hanna Wood Engravings
The Story of the Nativity in Woodcuts
Peter Pauper Press Mount Vernon 1950 Beautiful and unpretentious small press edition. While this is not a dated first edition - there is no date other than the neat inscription on the front endpaper which clearly states '1956' - the unsullied specially made paper has gorgeous clean pulls of the 26 engravings. So this might just be a first printing. There is a blind stamp of a former owner on the same page too. These are faults but they are not intrusive. The jacket has protected the decorated cover boards which look fresh and beautiful. Boyd Hanna was a superb craftsman and the engravings are all on the right hand pages. The King James text is beautifully clear in red Waverley type. Language: eng. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Peter Pauper Press, Mount Vernon hardcover

BRONTE CHARLOTTE; EICHENBERG FRITZ. WOOD ENGRAVINGS
Jane Eyre
Random House New York: 1943. Hardcover no dustjacket. Reading copy. Cover has scratches and tears. Pages are discolored. Transmuted by the rare Bronte imagination the romance of Jane and Rochester takes on a strange and unforgettable atmosphere that lifts it above the level of mere melodrama. But Charlotte Bronte intended more. She portrayed the refusal of a spirited and intelligent woman to accept her appointed place in society with unusual frankness and with a passionate sense of the dignity and needs of her sex.
