Ammon eröffnete 1822 in eine Allgemeine Praxis in Dresden, war später Leibarzt des Königs Friedrich August II von Sachsen, Besitzer einer erfolgreichen Augenklinik und Verfasser unzähliger Publikationen und, wenn wir Hirsch glauben, das exemplarische Vorbild eines Mediziners des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die vorliegende Schrift, die erste in deutscher Sprache verfasste Arbeit, entstand nach seinem Universitätsabschluss in Göttingen und der Eröffnung der eigenen Praxis.
