HUGOLIAD. or The Grotesque and Tragic Life of Victor Hugo
Grove Press hardcover New York: . . 1st edition. "126pp. Author's preface postscript by Gelu Ionescu notes and chronology. Written when Ionesco was twenty six this comic novel deflates the nineteenth century literary giant Victor Hugo. Popularly revered as THE great Romantic poet. Hugo is shown here in a different light: as an unromantic charlatan and an intellectual lightweight who rose to success thanks to ruthless tactics and relentless ambition. ""Le Miserable "" indeed. An early work by Ionesco it shows his devastating wit distaste of literary pretention and in sending up Hugo Ionesco sets forth his own views on art literature and the human spirit." [LINDNER, RICHARD]. Ionesco, Eugene
Richard Lindner
Mourlot Fernand hardcover Paris: Mourlot, Fernand, (1975). Elephant folio. (38) ff. One of 150 copies. Contains ten lithographs measuring 28 1/2 by 20 3/4 inches, each signed by Richard Lindner and numbered and counter-initialed by Fernand Mourlot. In his introduction, Ionesco says of Lindner that he is "one of the great contemporary masters. His work lies within the realm of caricature, painting, and theater. It is interpretation of reality, but reality is not realistic." Mourlot, who worked with all the great artists of the twentieth century, writes that Lindner created ten original gouaches and watercolors for this series, supervised the transfer to the stones, corrected the colors, retouched the plates, and oversaw the printing with such a perfectionist's eye that "only Marc Chagall forced us to run the plates so many times through the presses." A mint copy, loose as issued, in a printed quarter-vellum clamshell box.
