ECOSSEUSES, LES-, OU LES OEUFS DE PASQUES. TROYES, CHEZ LA VEUVE OUDOT, 1745. [Books with the same title]

Small 8vo. Contemporary dark green morocco, spine richly gilt, with red title-label, double gilt fillet borders on sides, richly gilt inner dentelles, g.e. With woodcut frontispiece printed in golden green, showing two girls at work sitting opposite each other, by Comte de Caylus after design by De Boucher, woodcut vignette of crossed beans also printed in golden green on title, title partly printed in golden green, and a second separate printed title, dated 1739. (4), 172 pp. LETTRES de la Grenouillere, entre Mr. Jerosme Dubois, Pecheux du Gros-Caillou. Et Mll Nanette Dubut, Blanchisseuse de linge fin. A la Grenouillere (Paris, 1749). (4), 63, (1 blank) pp. Ad 1: According to Gay-Lemonnyer "Les Ecosseuses" with the woodcut frontispiece had first been published in 1739. But when enlarged, like our copy, with the comedy "L'Histoire du porteur d'eau, ou les Amours de la Ravadeuse", and from 1745 onwards enlarged again, also like our copy, with "Relation galante et funeste de l'histoire d'une demoiselle qui a glisse' pour etre epousee, l'hiver du mois de decembre 1742", the title was usually changed into: "Etrennes de la Saint-Jean". The book contains a rare collection of facetiae written in the popular style by Comte de Caylus, Comte de Maurepas, Vade', Comtesse de Verrue, President de Montesqieu, Moncriff, De Crebillon le Jeune, Salle', La Chaussee, Duclos, D'Armenonville and Abbe' de Voisenon. They were later included in "Oeuvres de Caylus". The present enlarged edition still under its first title, and including the popular woodcut by Comte de Caylus and Boucher, seems to be very rare. According to Morin the publisher's address at Troyes is fictitious, and was the book not printed at Troyes at all. Ad 2: According to Gay-Lemonnyer the "Lettres de la Grenouillere" consist of two parts, of which the "Lettres" proper are the second part, with a separate title, dated at Paris, 1749. The first part then contained a monologue under the title "Le Pacquet de Mouchoirs", also with a separate title, but now without address or date. Ours is obviously a variant edition of the letters only. With a preface telling that after the marriage of the two lovers their letters were entrusted to the mother of Miss Dubut, who herewith published them, unchanged. The work was ascribed to J.J. Vade'. It is of special interest for its use of "Parisian argot", the dialect of the common people at Paris. Fine copies. Ad 1: Gay-Lemonnyer II, 182; Brunet I, 1705 (listed under Caylus); cf. Louis Morin, Quelques faux en mention bibliographique, in: Bulletin du Bibliophile, 1909; Ad 2: Gay-Lemonnyer II, 820; cf. Oberle', "La Bibliotheque Bleue", 346 (ed. of 1756, also of the "Lettres" only, of 48 pp.).

UTRECHT, WED. W. BROEDELET EN ZOON, 1722. [Books with the same title]

Sm.8vo. Contemp. vellum. With engraved printer's device on title. (12), 448, 103 pp. Rare popular book about the lives of the wives of the first twelve Roman Emperors. The main part treats at length the lives of the wives of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, the three wives of Caligula, the two wives of Claudius, and the first two wives of Nero. In the added part then are treated more briefly the third wife of Nero, and the wives of Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasianus, Titus, and Domitianus. Probably these "Lives" were taken from other sources, and perhaps the main part was also published separately, to judge from the pagination. The present title is found listed only once, in the Scheepers Collection, which was probably our copy. Good copy of a rare book.- (Frontispiece missing ?). Scheepers II, 968 (also with the note: "titelpr. ontbr. ?").

LIED, EEN NIEUW-, VAN EEN JONGMAN EN JONGE DOCHTER.- EEN NIEUW LIED. VAN EEN RAMPLASANT.- EEN NIEUW LIED, OF TEGENZANG OP HET MEISJE ALS HAAR MOEDER. (NO PLACE, CA. 1800). [Books with the same title]

4to. With ornamental woodcut headpiece. 1 leaf folded. Broadside with 3 popular songs on well-known melodies. The first is a ballad of 16 stanzas about a young man from Prague who loved the daughter of his master, was hanged at the gallows, but returned to life and happiness. The second song is about a substitute-soldier who is quite happy with his soldier's life, and the third is about the rather complicated amorous adventures of a young man, who regretted not having followed the example of his father by just marrying a single wife. According to the title, this last song was meant as a counterpart to a popular song about a girl regretting not having done like her mother. These songs were performed and the song-leaves sold by street singers. As ephemeral printing matter these printed songs now have become extremely rare. Fine copy.

Sm. 8vo. Contemp. half calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with black title-label. With fine engraved frontispiece, and 6 full-page engraved plates. (12), 432 pp. First edition of a popular book, containing the farcical adventures of a Nobleman from Utrecht and a Lady from Overijssel who both are looking for a rich partner in marriage to restore their affairs, but both meet with cunning servants wanting to marry higher up the social scale. The charming plates nicely illustrate the story. The book closes with "Eynde" (End), but in the last lines a continuation is promised, which also is listed by Buisman and by Gieles-Plak following him, but which is not present in most collections, while also only the first part was later republished. The first volume is indeed complete in itself, telling the story till the couples are married and flee to Paris to escape ridicule. The second volume then is devoted to their further adventures in Paris, which perhaps was of much less interest to Dutch readers. Fine copy, with the bookplate of B(ob) L(uza).- (Top of spine lost; sl. waterst. at the beginning).
