This exceptional typescript manuscript and complete suite of original illustrations provide splendid specimens for children’s book publishing during the Civil Rights & Women’s Rights movements through the Vietnam-War era. Set against the backdrop of a new young woman teacher convincing her young students to embrace intramural soccer and set up a league with other nearby schools fielding teams of all genders and races. The title was changed to “Shrimp’s Soccer Goal†when published by H.Z. Walck in 1970 but evidently intended by Lord & Berson to focus on the impact of young Miss Taylor’s enthusiasm for soccer her admiration of Pele after traveling to Brazil to see him play and inspire her students to learn the sport. The young “Negro†character Paul the best athlete is best friends with “Shrimp†and they both belong to neighborhood club with three others with Steve encouraging the young people to become involved in social justice causes. In 1969-1970 the United States featured the newly created professional soccer league sanctioned by FIFA -- North American Soccer League whose most successful franchise was the New York Cosmos who later managed to recruit both Pele from Brazil and Franz Breckenbauer from West Germany to play for them. New York & Bronx NY Los Angeles CA: Harold Berson ca. 1965-1978. 12mo. sized 3 x 5 in. up to 8 x 11 in. 4to. 81 separate pen & ink drawings intended for text illustrations and page illustrations many with paginations some for during printing mock-ups while most appear in storyboard format others are just image montages most on translucent paper with a couple on ruled paper some with fold creases from mailing and 1 w/ portion burned at margin still a remarkable set of original artwork. This exceptional archive original illustrations reflect the artist’s interests in whimsical fairy tale and folk tale settings and exotic locales he embraces from his many travels. Several of the first grouping within this archive depict a rural thatched roof farm and family with animals while another group focuses on a Japanese folktale. About 25% of the illustrations are focused on his book Raminagrobis and the Mice including notes on colours assorted stages of a few of the illustrations and others. The remainder appear focused on “Kassim’s Shoes†and others including his “Mother Goose†with inventive portrayals of animals and nicely executed storyboarding. As a sociologist and folklorist Berson actively sketched and drew from his surroundings in Europe the Middle East and North Africa to create inventive and engaging worlds for young readers. A splendid portfolio of six original pen & ink sketches by the noted children’s artist for an apparently unpublished rendition of the adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza from Cervantes. The first drawing depicts Don Quixote attacking the flock of sheet mistakenly believing that they were two armies marching against one another; freeing of the chained galley slaves; stabbing the wine sacks; waving sword and armour just before destroying the puppet show representing the Moors while Sancho Panza holds his head; as well as image of Don Quixote in the cow cart and Sancho Panza dutifully riding alongside. Approximately 185 x 143 mm each tipped to larger sheets of wove paper. Small folio Italy: n.d. ca 18th century. Cased in full 18th-century Italian Neapolitan brown calf over pasteboard tooled in gold all-over covers with two outer border rolls surrounding three double-ruled panels filled with rolls and solid tools decorated with silver paint now mostly oxidized inner panel with tulip tools at corner surrounding cartouche of gouges with center lozenge of floral tools spine with raised bands in seven compartments with cherub tool rebacked preserving original spine later endpapers and edge gilding. For binding cf. BL c154g12/Davis 859; BL c27e18; Davis III 380. <br/><br/>An 18th-century Italian album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits based on Aliprando Capriolo's Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri 1596. These copies were probably made from Pompillio TottiÂ’s edition of Capriolo Ritratti et Elogil di Capitani Illustri 1636. Totti altered CaprioloÂ’s engravings adding the coats of arms seen in many of the portraits here. Portraits include Tamerlane Gattamelata Roberto Sanseverino and the condottieri Vitelli brothers. The binding is in a style common to the Salvioni workshop. Davis Gift III 380 which Foot suggests was bound in an unknown Neapolitan workshop shows the same wide outer roll on the covers. hardcover

Five original pen & ink cartoon drawings sized from 13.25 x 18.5 in. up to 14 x 19 in. executed on thick card stock w/ one embossed “Glarco No. 1†at outer fore-edge 1 w/ “Strathmore†blind stamp at upper corner all camera-ready for printer still retaining some pencil annotations & ruling at outer fore-edges of image four of the five signed at lower fore-edge one twice both with signature and the artist’s iconic beaver in checkered pants minor dustsoiling light toning to fore-edges of a couple still NF exemplars. These five exceptional original political cartoon drawings reflect not only the impact of the automobile and importance of automobile travel in the World War II-era Pacific Northwest but also offer an intriguing quick snapshot of many issues we still confront as a society today. The first shows a uniformed policeman setting on a bedstead with looming anthropomorphic license plate trying to convince a resistant driver hiding under his covers to renew his license plates. License plates at the time were issued annually with necessary fees to pay for road maintenance policing and also ensured that automobiles were drivable with many municipalities requiring safety inspections. The next two both address the public safety issues of traffic accidents and the toll on pedestrians against the backdrop that at the time few municipalities or states actually required driver’s training for licenses and in the late 1930’s and 1940’s accidents fluctuated from 75 to 125 fatalities per 100000 registered vehicles as opposed to less than 20 in the 2000’s. One shows driving tips and encouraging safer speeds while the other graphically includes a skeletal skull as a front grille at night hurtling towards a pedestrian in the rain. The fourth cartoon announces “Oregon’s tourist business will be lifted toward the $ 50000000 mark†and trees and fish all welcoming automobile travelers speeding towards the “Great Oregon Outdoors.†By the early 1940’s tourism driven by automobiles was the third largest business in the state and would further expand following World War II and later construction of the Interstate Highway system. The final cartoon touts the move to build the Sullivan Gulch Expressway which would later become the Banfield Freeway named after T. harry Banfield and I-84 with development around the Lloyd Center and other apartment housing. The site was one of the largest “Hooverville†shantytown during the Great Depression housing at one time over 300 living in 130 shanties and only really finally closed during World War II. Fisher 1890-1962 attended college in Eastern Washington later studied art at the Portland Art Museum and by 1919 had begun working as cartoonist with The Oregon Journal Newspaper where he would remain until retiring in 1956 publishing over 9300 editorial cartoons. His trademark was an impish beaver wearing one-suspender checkered trousers signed about two-thirds of his drawings with none usually dated but often dating with matter incidental to the events of the week. His topics ranged from the New Deal to Truman Eisenhower World War II War Atrocities local events and more. The University of Washington and University of Oregon both have portions of original Fisher political cartoons and caricatures. Seven original gouache concept art paintings of jungle clearing by first bombing and then dropping by helicopter Caterpillar tracked equipment used as bulldozers ambulance rocket launcher and radio communications on the eve of the Vietnam War.

Oblong folio. 20 x 15 in. painted in muted gouache on Crescent Illustration Board No. 300 with original label indicating the board were purchased from the Duedall-Potts Stationers in downtown Albany OR and all are signed by the artist minor age toning & wear to fore-edges very slight scuffing still an excellent bright group. This series of military industrial concept art paintings appear to have been executed sometime around 1960 and most likely for articles in Popular Mechanics Mechanix Illustrated or military-specific periodicals focusing on weapons development. The first painting captures a jet close to the Lockheed F-104 but tale configuration different bombing a section of jungle with massive explosion in center of painting; 4-tracked dozer & trailer being lowered by Sikorsky dual-rotor helicopter into the debris; the caterpillar 4-tracked dozer then clearing the debris and finally being reloaded into dual-rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Other proposed military applications for the same four-track platform were an ambulance in battlefield conditions with one soldier carrying another to the open back door; four-tube rocket launcher featuring sharp angles and planes foreshadowing the ungainly Tesla Truck and finally portable communications with revolving antenna and operator in rear half of the four-track vehicle. Although the proposed innovations as depicted in the concept art do not specifically mention a manufacturer or company these appear to be quite similar in operation and construction as the famed Tucker Sno-Cat 4-track vehicles which were historically developed and built in the company factory based out of Medford Oregon and famously used by Sir Vivian Fuchs in crossing Antarctica overland in 1958. Calson 1927-2009 was a Detroit-born commercial artist who served in the U.S. Army during World War II then the Army Air Force and later studied at Art Center. He became a noted industrial illustrator and commercial artist as well as farmer and woodworker. A Christmas Carol by Shophound or Adventures of Shophound from A to Z
1931. Paperback. Very Good. A sweet little hand-made volume illustrated in full-color throughout; about 4.5-by-6 inches 20 pages including front and rear cover alternately bound with staples or glue. This joyful ode to Christmas booty as in presents features a Schnauzer in holly and red bow bounding through an alphabet of potential gifts as though through a store. Perhaps created as a mock-up story board or even a potential magazine lay-out it begins with Shophound sitting in his Vogue office on Christmas Eve most illustrations are drawn hastily though nonetheless legible and pleasing in colored pencil with two tipped-on illustrations cut from an unidentified source likely a Tiffany's catalogue. A little finger-smudged with graphite and with faint editorial notes in the margins buttressing the possibility that this is an early draft of a larger project. <br/><br/> paperback

Handwritten and Illustrated Family History
Worsthorne Lancashire c. 1950. Hardcover. Fine. Black white red and gilt decorative Christmas paper over boards; 185 x 273 mm; pp. 83 handwritten in ink with more than 20 drawings and watercolors including vignettes decorative flourishes and full-page scenes. A florid orderly feminine hand records a very personal account of her childhood memories and family history composed in hindsight and lamenting "the present world. of H. Bombs Nuclear Tests Atomic Secrets Radioactivity planes hurling through the air with deafening noise. The levity of my sketch Wordsorth forgive for like you 'Have I not reason to lament what man has made of man'" She also references "peace time" making it clear that she has some familiarity with war and this is perhaps why the entire volume is a careful balancing act between a retreat to the past told cheerfully as though to a child and a more somber rumination on her present. The artwork is invariably accomplished -- ranging from lovely floral themes animals portraits of children and one of Queen Elizabeth landscapes and family houses to somewhat fantastical renderings of human forms floating in the air. She also carefully draws and colors two pictorial maps of locales she recalls from her youth and tips on 2 photographs b/w silver gelatin prints of her grandmother's shawl and bonnet and 1 photograph of a broadside advertising the auction of her uncle's John Crowther sheep and sheep dogs. John her fatherÂ’s younger brother died in 1887 after being struck by lightning. The family sells his home JacksonÂ’s House in Worsthorne in 1888 and moves north leaving their convent education for the Home Farm of Ormrod House belonging to her great grandmother. Photographs were printed in Cheriton Folkestone. Locations on her maps include the River Douglas Rufford Parbold Lathom House Ormskirk Scarisbrick Hall Ainsdale Birkdale Crossens Greeves Hall and more. Latvian manuscript: 17 Drawings of Gorillas and other Apes

Fine. 8 loose leaves folded once to create 32 pages each page about 7-by-9 inches; contains 16 extraordinary drawings of gorillas rendered in bright blue or black ink frequently in an etched or cross-hatched style reminiscent of woodcuts. With handwritten captions in Russian Latvian and German and dated from 1925-1959. Studies of the animals in the wild or captivity drawn perhaps from life but also copied from other images collected from a variety sources. Though the source of the original image is frequently noted the image itself is never included. All drawings are remarkably bold and adept the bright blue in particular lends an air of pop or modern art while others are more formal or refined. All are surrounded by equally bold perfectly legible handwritten text. Unique and simply wonderful with some haunting images on the faces of the apes. <br/><br/> paperback

A charming volume it includes the story of Pinocchio handwritten in black ink and with nicely accomplished illustrations in black ink or pencil and an original story "Spettacolo di Gala" handwritten in black ink in a different hand and illustrated perhaps by a child in colored pencil. "Spettacolo" is about circuses primarily clowns. Both stories are translated into English on the facing page or below handwritten in blue ink -- some flaws in the translation suggest that this may be the work of Italian students of English. <br/><br/> paperback

Teschemacher" in brown leather label affixed to front board; about 16 x 20 inches; contains mock-ups preliminary and finished illustrations and designs for houses advertisements bookplates letterheads calendars announcements and more -- even hand-painted decorative motifs in Art Nouveau-style. Various sizes on paper heavy cardstock and onionskin; and in ink pencil or full-color painting. Some duplicates but well over 100 distinct designs. Highlights include full-color paintings for Tiergarten Nuremberg a tiger's face Aerozon Fabrik women's swimwear; and ink drawings for Minimax "Das Schönste Geschenk!" Moton a pesticide Rapsch Kriegsbund der Offizierfrauen. Numerous pencil drawings range from hastily brain-stormed sketches to typographic experiments and detailed streetscapes and scenes. Some projects are available from start to finish -- a pencil sketch turned presentation in ink and the final printed product. <br/><br/>Erich Teschemacher was an architect painter poster artist and graphic designer educated at Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums in Berlin. He was married to the commercial artist Marga Renner and echoes of her resonate in this collection as well: a notebook of 10 embroidery designs in pencil and color and two different exhibition announcments for a show of modern residential interiors. hardcover

Boy Scout's Illustrated Notebook
England c. 1930. Ephemera. Very Good. Disbound broken text block only; 176 x 227 mm; 78 lined pages with text handwritten in black ink and fine illustrations in ink and/or gouache; plus a photo and a short article clipped from a newspaper and neatly tipped-on. This volume perhaps fell into the hands of a terrorist younger sibling as a few pages are scribbled on or have chips or scuffs where it appears that a tipped-on item has been removed. Still the surviving pages are remarkable and -- since the binding is already broken -- begging for display. Our author intials his artwork "L.C.S." and his thoughtful text reveals his age 16 years the names of his fellow scouts Cooles Adams Burchett Matthews Moore and scout leaders Sanders Ward and some details about activities in Gilwell Park and around Bournemouth. But L.C.S. is clearly more interested in honing his artistic skills than writing much down -- the bulk of this volume is given over to his impressively accomplished decorative borders full-page gouache landscapes and comical ink sketches. He provides maps of camp sites at Colyton and Upton; cartoons of sites being invaded by cows or bees; goache portraits of Native American Indians or animals or sweeping landscapes; portraits of scouts in uniform that illustrate the different uniforms used in Spain Czechoslovakia Iceland Denmark Sweden Norway Siam Poland Scotland and Hungary. He excells at embellishments ornate lettering and decorative borders and it happens frequently that he'll create an elaborate border for a page but then neglect to fill it. <br/><br/> unknown

Heavy cardstock leaves oblong 325 x 250 mm bound with thin blue rope tassled along spine; pp. 54 with text handwritten in black ink in German and English with original illustrations in ink or ink and gouache both in text and full-page. Created from 32 leaves some of them glued together along the edges creating a new page when the author/illustrator wanted to change her lay-out text or illustration -- these have since become detached offering an interesting look at the author's creative process. Binding broken and leaves loose but in excellent condition suitable for display. The artwork is extraordinary -- showing cute little chicks as their adventure takes them from fields full of flowers to lakes brimming with colorful fish. It tells a story of 3 little chicks who find a mysterious blue egg which they are told not to play with but they do and learn some valuable lessons from the consequences. Though little is known about the author she appears in a tiny b/w photograph on the ultimate full-page illustration. More of her unrelated artwork is laid-in at rear including pastels of trees floral arrangements in gouache -- lovely suitable for framing. <br/><br/> paperback

Heavy brown cardstock wraps bound with blue ribbon lettering in blue gouache and black ink on front cover; oblong 283 x 180 mm; pp. 14 heavy cardstock leaves each with text handwritten in black ink accompanied by a full-color goache illustration. Covers a little soiled; light chipping along yapp edges; text block a bit dust-smudged here and there but overall nice and bright. A pencil notation on the final page indicates that this entirely original illustrated story was the project of Natalie Shalita nee Greenberg a student at Cooper Union. She worked as a designer in Harper & Row's Children's Books Division in the 1960s and early 1970s. Here she tells the story of twin girls and their thwarted attempt to distinguish themselves. <br/><br/> paperback

Dark grey mottled cloth over boards backed in black leather "Sketch Book" stamped in gilt on upper board; oblong 140 x 94 mm; approx. pp. 100 a mix of pale blue pale grey and dark grey leaves. Contains 25 pencil sketches and 4 watercolors all landscapes -- mountains forests coastal towns. The front paste-down bears a sticker from Frost & Adams Artists Materials 37 Cornhill Boston. Also on the front paste-down the ownership signature and address of George E. Edward Niles 1837-1898 a lithographer and painter who kept a studio in Jackson New Hampshire where he exhibited the works of many other artists. His wife was the heiress Adams of the Nickel Bank of Boston and he was in no need of money so he rarely sold his paintings and rarely signed his works. He exhibited at the Boston Art Club from 1873 to 1877. SOLD WITH a small oil painting 108 x 73 mm of a sailboat at sunset initialed RC and very pretty. <br/><br/> hardcover

Contemporary full dark green morocco lavishly stamped in blind and gilt on boards and spine; 4to 210 x 265 mm; approx. pp. 200 nearly full with handwritten poetry and prose original artwork albumen photographs and ephemera -- sometimes adhered to the page direct on the page or loosely inserted via corner slots. A little scuffing along spine and edges of boards else fine. A varied collection of highly skilled original artwork including 6 paintings en brunelle 12 in watercolor or gouache and 7 in black ink wash; plus 11 pencil drawings 4 sepia albumen photographs mounted direct to the page ranging in size from 122x85 to 132x195 mm about a dozen handwritten contributions of prose and poetry including one in Spanish and more than 50 pieces of ephemera. Decades in the making and with contributions from numerous hands this is a rich and remarkably accomplished volume -- one wonders if it was perhaps created by a circle of artists. Landscapes and landmarks of England appear in the original artwork such as a finely detailed drawing of the house where Sir Isaac Newton was born and photographs St. Mary's Church; New College from the Gardens as well as the ephemera numerous engraved illustrations of castles neatly clipped from unknown sources. Far-flung locales are also represented: View on the Medina River pencil drawing Martaban at Sunrise beautiful watercolor of Burma an architectural drawing that suggests India. Prose and poetry contributions mostly original offer religious sentiments thoughts on love and friendship and a bit of humor in particular a piece entitled "Georgy on Shakespeare" argues that the Bard is greatly over-rated. Ephemera includes holiday greetings numerous illustrations extracted from unknown sources and the occasional die-cut. Landscapes birds flowers -- all the hallmarks of a typical album of the period -- though this one is particularly nice. <br/><br/> hardcover

Attractive illustration in red green yellow and black on piece of white card roughly nine and three-quarter inches by six and a quarter neatly mounted on piece of black card roughly ten and a quarter inches by seven and three-quarters. At head a parody of the London Underground black rectangle over red circle roughly six and a half inches by three and a quarter bearing the notice 'ALIGHT HERE' in white letters. Beneath this the words 'FOR EVERY SMOKER.' with a red arrow at foot pointing to a box of Swan Vesta matches. Very good though lightly foxed. Without date or place [1920s or 30s?]. unknown
