[Hervey, John]
Miscellaneous Thoughts on the present Posture both f our Foreign and Domestic Affairs.; Humbly offer'd to the Consideration of the Parliament and the People
London: J. Roberts 1742. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Fair. 80 pages. Some page foxing noted. Some moisture staining around edges at early pages. John Hervey 2nd Baron Hervey PC 13 October 1696 – 5 August 1743 was an English courtier and political writer. Heir to the Earl of Bristol he obtained the key patronage of Walpole and was involved in many court intrigues and literary quarrels being apparently caricatured by Pope and Fielding. His memoirs of the early reign of George II were too revealing to be published in his time and did not appear for more than a century. In 1725 he was elected M.P. for Bury St Edmunds. Hervey had been hesitating between William Pulteney afterwards earl of Bath and Robert Walpole but in 1730 he definitely took sides with Walpole of whom he was thenceforward a faithful adherent. He was able to render valuable service to Walpole from his influence with the Queen. Through him the minister governed Queen Caroline and indirectly George II. Hervey was vice-chamberlain in the royal household and a member of the Privy Council. In 1733 he was called to the House of Lords by writ of acceleration in his father's Barony. After the fall of Sir Robert Walpole he was dismissed July 1742 from his office. An excellent political pamphlet Miscellaneous Thoughts on the present Posture of Foreign and Domestic Affairs shows that he still retained his mental vigor. He predeceased his father but three of his sons became successively Earls of Bristol. Miscellaneous thoughts on the present posture both of our foreign and domestic affairs: humbly offer'd to the consideration of the Parliament and the people. Author: John Hervey. Sabin Americana Description: Based on Joseph Sabin's famed bibliography Bibliotheca Americana Sabin Americana 1500--1926 contains a collection of books pamphlets serials and other works about the Americas from the time of their discovery to the early 1900s. It provides access to documents from an assortment of genres sermons political tracts newspapers books pamphlets maps legislation literature and more. Per Sabin this was published anonymously. [John Hervey]
Some Remarks on the Minute Philosopher In a Letter from a Country Gentleman to His Friend in London
London: J Roberts 1732. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. An interesting and scarce text reviewing George Berkeley's text. The work is a letter whereby an English clergyman is writing to his London friend on his views of Alciphron or The Minute Philosopher. This is the second edition of this text. The Minute Philosopher is a philosophical dialogue by Irish philosopher George Berkeley. In this work he combats the arguments of the free-thinkers such as Mandeville and Shaftesbury against the Christian religion. The work was first published in 1732 the same year that this review was published. Although there is not an author attributed to the title page it was later known that the title was written by John Hervey or 2nd Baron Hervey of Ickworth. John Hervey was an English courtier political writer and memoirist. He was known for writing very brutally frank works such as his memoirs of the court of George II where he gave a very unflattering account of the King and Frederick Prince of Wales. In a full cloth binding. Externally smart with some bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown A G Mollard Aberdeen June 1971. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age toned to edges with the title page heavily age toned with handling marks. Scattered spots throughout. Very Good J Roberts hardcover

Two of the poems "Allen and Ella" and "The Lover and the Friend" were reprinted in George Pearch's 1770 edition of A Collection of Poems. Mills's prose account at the end of his visit to the Paraclete to view the uncovered remains supposedly of Abelard and Eloisa a popular romantic story in the 18th Century with Gothic undertones would be of decided interest to scholars of the Gothic: the frontispiece illustrates the author kneeling to examine the skeletons with appropriate reverence whilst torchbearing monks and nuns look on. The plan also details the exact position of the skeletal remains which were subsequently removed when the Paraclete was destroyed in the French Revolution. During Mills's tour of Europe he met another young man called Peter Vallete to whom the book is dedicated; and it also includes a poem at the end dedicated to Valette. ESTC N75 locates copies in Edinburgh University Library and TCD in these islands; and Folger Rice Library of Congrees and Chicago in the United States; the prelims and the unpaginated leaves are revisions of the text.
