HISTOIRE DES ANABAPTISTES, CONTENANT LEUR DOCTRINE, LES DIVERSES OPINIONS QUI LES DIVISENT EN PLUSIEURS SECTS, LES TROUBLES QU'ILS ONT CAUSEZ, & ENFIN TOUT CE QUI S'EST PASSE' DE PLUS CONSIDERABLE A' LEUR EGARD, DEPUIS L'AN 1521. JUSQUES A' PRESENT. AMSTERDAM, JACQUES DESBORDEZ, 1700.
Sm.8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt, with red title-label, red mottled edges. With richly engraved allegorical frontispiece, title printed in red and black, and 17 full-page engraved plates. (6), 280 pp. Rare edition of an anonymous Amsterdam edition of the "History of the Mennonites", according to the Mennonite Encyclopedia not to be confused with the same title, published anonymously at Paris in 1695, written by the French Jesuit Francois Catrou. The identity of the author of the present Amsterdam edition was never solved. The confusion was caused by the fact that both the present and Catrou's book were enlarged editions, brought up-to-date, of the famous "Tumultum Anabaptistarum", by Lambertus Hortensius, first published at Basel in 1548. Hortensius' book for centuries influenced all Anabaptist histories. For the present edition part of the plates also had been used in the Dutch translation of Hortensius' book published at Amsterdam in 1660, and here are somewhat shorter than the text-pages of the book. The plates depict Mennonites in church, preaching, running naked through the town, but mostly they show the torturing and execution of Mennonites. In his preface the anonymous author claims that he used many different sources, representing various points of view. Good copy.- (Top of first blank cut off; small brown stain at top of first lvs.). Mennonite Encyclopedia II, p. 748.

JOURNAL D'UN VOYAGE SUR LES COSTES D'AFRIQUE ET AUX INDES D'ESPAGNE; AVEC UNE DESCRIPTION PARTICULIERE DE LA RIVIERE DE LA PLATA, DE BUENOSAYRES, & AUTRES LIEUX; COMMENCE' EN 1702 & FINI EN 1706. AMSTERDAM, AUX DEPENS DE LA COMPAGNIE, 1730.
12mo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco title lable lettered in gold, marbled endpapers. With woodcut frontispiece of a "Sauvage du Perou", woodcut vignette on title, title printed in red and black. (2), 372 pp. Second edition with a new title of the original edition being published in 1723 in Amsterdam and Rouen, of an interesting anonymous report of a voyage written by a Frenchman who sailed from France to Africa and Buenos Aires aboard a slave ship belonging to the "Asiento" Company, which was entitled to transport slaves to South America after a treaty with Spain. The author gives a detailed account of the slaves; he describes the way they looked and dressed, and he gives an elaborate report on the slave trade in Africa, Brazil - the author also visited Rio de Janeiro and Bahia - and Buenos Aires. The whole voyage has been described very minutely, as the author reports his observations every day. The ship left on 14 July 1702, and arrived on 5 September in Africa, where they stayed for 5 days, before sailing further to Loango. Loango was the place where the slaves were traded. On 20 August, they arrived at Buenos Aires. On 30 October 1705, the author started his voyage back to France, where he arrived in March 1706. The role of the author on the ship has remained unknown, in spite of the research carried out by Regine Pernoud (L'Amerique du Sud au XVIII siecle, Nantes, 1942-Cahiers d'histoire et de Bibliographie, nr. 3) in the archives of the "Asiento" Company, which today are in the National Archives in Paris. But his seasickness which he doesn't hide from his readers is an important indication that the author is not a sailor, and his efforts to learn the Spanish language point out that he hadn't traveled to Spanish-speaking countries before. Good copy with ms. dedication to Madame de Maisonrouge.- (Covers slightly rubbed). Sabin 36685; Borba de Moraes I, p. 430 ('excellent book on the subject'); not in Barbier; NUC mentions editions of 1723 and 1737.
