First Edition some very light and inoffensive spotting mainly to gutters; original black cloth upper board lettered in red backstrip lettered in gilt lettering a little faded but wholly legible red top fore-edges lightly spotted else a very good bright firm copy. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Cape's advertisement leaf printed on yellow stock and promoting Nichols' 'Down the Graden Path' the first of his keenly sought-after garden titles is tipped-in at rear free endpaper. This leaf is very often missing. Some six years before the event Nicholas is forecasting the coming of WWII and here delivers a clear exposition of his subsequently notorious pacifist outlook. Beverley Nichols' second and best-known trilogy forms a delightful chronicle of the enhancement of his Georgian manor house and gardens at Ashtead in Surrey. It comprises 'Merry Hall' 1951 'Laughter on the Stairs 1953 and 'Sunlight on the Lawn' 1956. An abridged version of the trilogy was issued in a single volume as 'The Gift of a Home' in 1972.
