[Brassai] Morand, Paul
Paris De Nuit. Signed Presentation copy from Brassai to the noted photographer David Freund
Paris: Arts et Métiers Graphiques 1933. First edition first printing. Spiral bound card covers. Good overall. An inscribed copy of Brassai's acclaimed masterpiece "Paris de Nuit" published by Arts et Métiers Graphiques Paris in 1933. Dated New York le 6 Oct 1979 Pour Davide Freund bien amicalement Brassai".

Writing in "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" Andrew Roth wrote ".with 62 rich full-page photogravures capturing his unforgettable "social fantastic" vision of Paris "Paris de Nuit" combines the luxe and the louche. Its graphic design is sophisticated and its photogravure reproductions so rich that the sooty blacks still look like they'll rub off the page. Paul Morand novelist diplomat and later persona non grata for his collaboration with the Vichy government gets the cover's most prominent credit for his essay here but Brassaï's photos are the book's real meat. Brassaï became a master at drawing luminosity from the darkness. This work has lost none of its dark glamour or film noir grit". "The book created a sensation when it was published; many pictures from the series were deemed too risqué and were not exhibited or published for decades until the 1976 sequel "The Secret Paris of the 1930s." The first book set Brassaï on a lucrative and prolific career" McDarrah 55.

Measuring approximately 10 x 8 inches the book is wire spiral bound in photographically illustrated fragile wrappers and this issue there is no pulling of the wire as is so often the problem. The overall condition of the book is good but missing the front lower corner with edgewear and a scrap with more chipping on the edge of the back cover. There is no foxing.

Overall this is desirable copy of a notoriously fragile masterpiece that is rarely found signed by the photographer. In a custom made box Cited in all three reference works on photobooks: "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" by Andrew Roth "The Photobook: A History" by Parr and Badger and "The Open Book" by Andrew Roth. Royal 8vo photographic endpapers10pp text 62 full page gravure plates. Parr & Badger I 134; Roth p. 76. Arts et Métiers Graphiques unknown

Paris by Night.

Paris in the 20s Brassai. Paris by Night. New York:: Pantheon 1987. First Printing of the First US Edition. ISBN: 0394563271. A Fine copy in a Very Good unclipped dust jacket with peeling to the jacket laminate. Arriving in Paris in 1924 Brassaï rapidly became a shrewd observer of nocturnal Parisian life. He sensed that photography was the tool that would allow him to document his vision of a dying society. Fascinated by the night which he found disconcerting enigmatic and suggestive Brassaï photographed its every aspect from police to prostitutes to the homeless to socialites all in a dreamlike and mysterious manner. In sixty-four images Brassaï succeeded in remarkably capturing this unique ambience. This book meticulously assembled by Brassaï himself signifies the birth of the artist. Brassaï originally from Hungary traveled to Paris in 1924 where he began to associate with the avant-garde artist community in particular with Picasso and the Parisian surrealist circles. He quickly established himself as one of the most original photographers of his generation.
Pantheon,, hardcover
