London: Scarlet Imprint 2021. Belarion edition number 44 of 210 signed copies. 8vo 119pp. Single photo plate. Signed by Grey at front. Bound in black bonded leather and emblazoned with the Cross of St Peter on front and back boards metallic endpapers dust jacket and lined slipcase with the sign of triumph. Fine condition.

Beautiful deluxe edition from Scarlet Imprint. From the publisher:

The Two Antichrists is a monograph on the figure of Antichrist in a post-Christian and progressive Thelemic context.

Opening with considerations on the future of witchcraft and its relation to radical ecology Grey returns to the Babalon Working of Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard and considers a series of little examined texts from science fiction and the outer fringes of Scientology which form a ‘Babalon Apocrypha.’ By reading across these sources the familiar story is revealed to have hidden depths and dimensions. Exploring the role of Antichrist in relation to Parsons and Hubbard Grey provides insights into the initiatory drama of Thelema: of Satanic rites Abyss and Angel. The Two Antichrists observes the long shadow cast by the monolith of Scientology and Parsons’ eclipsed sodality The Witchcraft. Looking to the future he envisions an emergent space witchcraft infused with the spirit of Do What Thou Wilt.

The book concludes with a series of non-denominational rituals and revised Antichrist workings. The work is a fusion of inspiration research and ritual from which Grey draws the first lines of his vision of witchcraft in the dusk of our world.
. Scarlet Imprint unknown

[Spritualism] [Witchcraft] Campbell, Alexander
Demonology. An Address delivered to the Popular Lecture Club Nashville Tennessee March 10 1841
Bethany VA: Millennial Harbinger 1841. First edition. Disbound pamphlet though still stitched extracted from the Millennial Harbinger of October 1841. 23x14cm pp457-480. Some browning and staining to margins else very good.

A very interesting address given by the Restoration Movement minister Alexander Campbell 1788-1866. This is an early instance of spiritualism Campbell believing demons were ghosts of the departed which influenced the living. A review from the Nashville Whig 2 days after the speech gives a good summary of the address:

"The somewhat novel subject of Demonology was discussed on Wednesday night with much good taste and profound learning by Mr. Alexander Campbell of Virginia. His argument was chiefly directed to the original and true office of the term Demon as recognized in the Divine Scriptures in contradistinction to its use by the early Greek poets and its meaning as employed in modern times. The whole subject was treated as a theory of disembodied spirits of the just as well as the damned exercise a decided though mysterious influence over the actions and destinies of the living. All are demon in the original sense of the term there being demons of good as well as demons of evil - the latter the subjects and especial instruments of the Prince of Darkness Beelzebub. The superstitions of ghosts hobgoblins and apparitions were duly divested of their corporeal and incorporeal horrors 'raw herd bloody bones' and all and the doctrine of witchcraft treated as an idle fancy of the brain. The victims of these follies in all ages were referred to in a happy vein of sarcasm and their manifold mental sufferings depicted with a fancy that proved that the distinguished lecturer has humor for the ridiculous as well as taste for the sublime. [WITCHCRAFT].
Factum pour maistre Urbain Grandier prestre curé de l’eglise S. Pierre du Marché de Loudun & l’un des chanoines en l’eglise Saincte Croix dudit lieu.
France 1634. 4to ca. 18.5 x 24 cm. Modern marbled boards with a red morocco title-label lettered in gold on the spine. 2 works in 1 volume. With:2 WITCHCRAFT. Remarques et considerations servans a la justification du curé de Loudun autres que celles contenuës en son factum.France ca. 1634. Two exceedingly rare pamphlets about the "Loudon possessions" a case of mass hysteria surrounding the supposed demonic possession of Ursuline nuns that took place in the western French town of Loudun in 1634. The affair led to the trial of a local priest Urbain Grandier who was accused of witchcraft. Interestingly these two pamphlets are by an anonymous partisan of the accused priest. The possession cases began in 1632 when several nuns at the local Ursuline convent claimed to be possessed by demons. The nuns accused Grandier a charismatic and controversial figure in Loudun of casting spells on them and making them his witches. Grandier who had gained the enmity of the powerful Cardinal Richelieu was arrested and put on trial despite a lack of evidence against him. The trial was riddled with corruption and political intrigue and Grandier was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to death by burning at the stake. His execution took place on 18 August 1634.While 18th century accounts of the famous trial such as those by De La Menardaye were popular contemporary accounts are almost unobtainable. Neither pamphlet has appeared in auction records and there are very few institutional holdings. The spine and corners of the boards are rubbed the title label is slightly chipped. Numbers in the upper corners of the leaves indicate that these two works were likely removed from a sammelband containing multiple works. Internally slightly browned an older typed description has been mounted with tape to the recto of the first free flyleaf. Otherwise in good condition.l Ad 1: Caillet 4718; Coumont F7.1; WorldCat 467111589 705771905 7 copies; Yve-Plessis 1285; Ad 2: Coumont R31.1; WorldCat 1254612433 2 copies; Yve-Plessis 1286; cf. for more information about Grandier and the Loudun Nuns see: Robbins The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology pp. 312-317; Both ads not in Barbier Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes; Rosenthal Bibliotheca Magica et Pneumatica; Thorndike Grandier and the Ursulines only mentioned once in general vol VIII p. 583; Ad 2 not in Caillet. hardcover

[WITCHCRAFT] LETHBRIDGE, TC. T. C.
Witches; Investigating an Ancient Religion
London: Routledge & Kegan Paul 1962. First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth titled in gilt to spine. Dustjacket. xi; 162pp. Light bumping and edgewear to extremities otherwise sharp and strong with a slight bow to the boards; internally clean; in a strong solid dustjacket with some unsightly spotting and staining and a little marginal fraying and wear. A very good copy.

Lethbridge's investigation into the history and traditions of modern witchcraft if such a thing exists benefits from an amount of contribution from actual contemporary witches which is certainly an improvement on the general 'research' of the 60's and 70's which was much more interested in the 'dancing naked in the moonlight' aspects of magic and less in the 'as above so below' theoreticals. This is what happens when rare bookdealers sell books to Jimmie Page.
Lethbridge makes a credible attempt at a historical outline and includes some folkloric sources that are generally overlooked in favor of the nearest pointy hat. Not terribly uncommon but sought after. Routledge & Kegan Paul unknown
