Eisner was a prominent San Francisco attorney his mother Lena Reinstein Eisner was a member of a prominent San Francisco family her brother Jacob B. Reinstein having served as a Regent of the University of California at the turn of the century. Both of Eisner's parents were native Californians.P. B. Cornwall was an adventurous fellow. In April of 1848 he set out from St. Joe to California. "The narrative records the encounter with the Mormons four thousand strong under Brigham Young at Council Bluffs following the expulsion from Nauvoo; the capture of Cornwall and his companions by Indians; their final escape and arrival at Fort Laramie" Eberstadt 114. They eventually made it across the Rockies but lost their guide Fallon to Native American depredations. A gelatin silver photograph 245 × 290 mm on the original captioned mount external dimensions approximately 335 × 367 mm. The photograph is lightly spotted and scuffed with a tiny chip to one edge and the blank bottom right-hand corner tip missing; the mount has the top left-hand and bottom right-hand corners broken off and the bottom margin is unevenly broken away taking with it the names of half the subjects; overall in presentable condition now loosely backed up with stiff card in a custom-made Mylar sleeve. Offered together with a vintage photograph of the 'Cornwall Football Club. Season 1910. Played 18. Won 15. Lost 3'. Adelaide Frank A. McNeill Gawler Place Photographer 1910. A gelatin silver photograph 240 × 290 mm on the original captioned mount external dimensions approximately 360 × 420 mm. A report of the semi-final a couple of years later indicates they were still at the top of their game: 'The Cornwall Football Club met and defeated the Sturt Imperials on the St Francis Xavier's grounds this afternoon. The play throughout was fast and clean and it was only in the last quarter that the Cornwalls asserted their supremacy. The winners have not yet been defeated in their association this season and will now meet Port Uniteds in the final match' 'The Mail' 10 August 1912. 2 items. unknown

[Queens, NY] Cornwall, Charles P.; Cornwall, James
1812 Manuscript Obligations Binding Charles P. Cornwall to James Cornwall Merchant of New York
Flushing Queens 1812. Very good condition. Obligation dated March 24 1812 Flushing Township in Queens County New York. Regarding $300 owed to James Cornwall of the City of New York and signed by Charles P Cornwall although the signature is torn away. Witnessed by Robert W. Rumsey and George Perry. Notes in pencil on verso showing payment of $285.08 in 1826. 7 1/2 x 12 1/2" folded.

Charles P. Cornwall was a large landowner in Queens in the early 1800s with Bayside Farm being the most valuable of his properties. In 1838 Cornwall named Thomas Whitson and John Nostrand his neighbors as trustees empowered to sell as much of his real estate as was needed to cover his debts and to lease the rest of it to cover his living expenses. They sold Cornwall's Bayside Farm for $15000 to Samuel Willetts of New York in 1838. The trustees using some of the assets from the sale then made a loan to Elisha Hall of Newburgh NY for $6000. Cornwall died in 1839 Hall failed to repay the interest or principal and the trustees were sued. The case gives an interesting perspective on the value of property in Queens at the time: "His Cornwall's preference for farms over city property differs from the opinion of most well informed and shrewd capitalists; but it may nevertheless be well doubted whether a farm situated in a populous neighborhood and near several great thoroughfares is not safer for a permanent investment than any city property". Cases in Law and Equity Supreme Court of the State of New York. Barbour Oliver L. Vol. XX. New York: Banks and Brothers. 1883. p 142-7. unknown

Near Fine/Very Good. 498pp. Octavo 22 cm Ivory white cloth over boards with gilt stamping on the backstrip and front board. Illustrated. In the dust jacket with rubbing to the panels. Part of the Biographies in Latter-day Saint History series.

Emmeline B. Wells 1828-1921 was born in Petersham Massachusetts. She served as the fifth General President of the Relief Society a position which she held for 11 years. When Emmeline B. Wells took on this public role she was 82 years old- an age when most men and women have been long retired. Not only was she was a wife and mother but she was also a prolific writer and a proponent of women's rights particularly during the woman suffrage movement in the United States.

Brigham Young University professor emeritus of history Carol Cornwall Madsen writes in her article Emmeline B. Wells: A Fine Soul Who Served Ensign July 2003 "By the end of the 1870s Emmeline was considered one of the 'leading sisters' of the Church. Her association with the Exponent had made her name well known in Latter-day Saint circles and her written contributions to eastern women's papers refuting the misconceptions about LDS women had brought her name to the attention of national suffragists. She reminded the readers of these papers that Latter-day Saint women could vote when most of them could not; that LDS women were educated at local colleges and were engaged in many professions including medicine and law when most other women were not; and that they headed their own organizations and contributed to the economic welfare of their communities.
