LATE OF ANDALUSIA COUNTY OF BUCKS PENNSYLVANIA IN THE COURT OF OYER AND TERMINER HELD AT DOYLESTOWN FOR BUCKS DECEMBER TERM 1831 CONTINUED TO FEBRUARY TERM 1832. PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION BY. STUDENT OF LAW‎

‎Philadelphia: G.W. Mentz & Son 1832. Later cloth. 2 213 1 blank 11 pp. With the Supplement on the trial of Lino which as Cohen notes was sometimes excluded from the book. Scattered foxing lacks front free endpaper rear endpaper dirty light rubberstamp on title page Good.

Lucretia "past forty and buxom" and Lino a young boarder who claimed to be the son of the Spanish governor of California became lovers; a decision was reached to rid themselves of Lucretia's inconvenient husband. "Five weeks after he arrived Lino purchased a quarter of a pound of arsenic from a Philadelphia druggist explaining that he used it in stuffing birds. The following day Mr. Chapman was taken ill; four days later he was dead." Soon thereafter the lovers "were quietly married in New York.Almost immediately the true character of the Spanish adventurer came out with the disappearance of the family silver and other obvious signs of his chicanery." His activities came to the attention of the police who decided to investigate Mr. Chapman's death. They discovered that "he was heavily dosed with arsenic" and arrested them both.
This book contains all the material on Lucretia's trial. Lino was tried separately convicted and executed. Lucretia was acquitted. "It is difficult to tell whether they had acted in concert in the murder; at least the jury gave her the benefit of the doubt" quotations from McDade.
McDade 169. ‎Harcourt Brace and Howe: New York 1920. First Edition. 8vo black cloth 276 pp. First edition. Recased in black cloth with rear board replaced. Personal library marks a few marks in text in pencil small stain to upper edge of pages but overall very good due to an expert recasing job. Very Good. An uncommon signed first edition copy of Du Bois' first autobiographical work of three composed of essays originally written in The Atlantic the Independent The Crisis and The Journal of Race Development. We believe this to be from Du Bois' personal library arriving at auction with several other books bearing identical marks to the spines the other books had the Du Bois library stamp to front free endpapers this copy is signed by Du Bois in ink. There are a few marks in pencil to the contents in an unknown hand. Expertly recased in black cloth with the original cloth preserved where extant - we acquired it without a rear board - and quite presentable. Without definitive proof of his ownership we have priced it for what it is a very uncommon signed first edition copy attractively restored. New York unknown books‎

‎Du Bois WE. Burghardt editor W. E.‎

‎A SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE NEGRO AMERICAN. A COMPILATION MADE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ATLANTA UNIVERSITY BY THE TENTH ATLANTA CONFERENCE‎

‎Atlanta: The Atlanta University Press 1905. 711pp. Later grey buckram with original front wrapper affixed to the front board. Old dark stain in gutter throughout minor chipping in gutter of first five leaves moderate toning to text. Upper outer corner of last leaf chipped just touching the page number. Good. The third and greatly expanded edition of an early and important study of the history and literature of African Americans edited by noted educator editor and author W.E.B. Du Bois. It is almost certainly the first bibliography of African Americana compiled by an African American. This third edition was preceded by a first edition of only four pages in 1900 and a second edition of eleven pages in 1901 both published by Atlanta University in 1900. This bibliography was created and expanded by Du Bois at an early and highly productive phase of his long and distinguished career as a writer while he was researching and writing his seminal and highly-influential study THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK published in 1903. The work opens with a short preface followed by a brief breakdown of the Tenth Atlanta Conference an annual academic event focused on African-American higher education the resolutions of said conference and a "Bibliography of Bibliographies of the Negro American." These sections are followed by the main two sections of the work. The first and most substantial portion is the titular "Select Bibliography of the Negro American" which runs thirty-six pages and lists notable African-American works alphabetically by author. The second major section lists prominent African-American periodicals also alphabetically. The final few pages are addenda to the two main sections. In his Preface Du Bois calls the work "imperfect" but thought it "better to print a poor bibliography of this great subject in the hope of bettering it in future editions than to wait longer for those better situated to do the work." The dedication reads: "To Keep the Memory of Phillis Wheatley David Walker Frederick Douglass William Wells Brown George Washington Williams and Paul Laurence Dunbar the Dead Pioneers." Another dedication lists Anthony Benezet Thomas Clarkson William Lloyd Garrison Benjamin Lundy Lydia Maria Child and Harriet Beecher Stowe "whose pens were mightier than the sword." Two much shorter editions preceded the present edition - numbering four and eleven pages respectively. This expanded work provides a much deeper selection of African-American literary and historical works. Though this expanded 1905 publication is the third edition of Du Bois's groundbreaking bibliography it is still the earliest of the three bibliographies of African Americans written by African Americans listed in Work's section titled "A Bibliography of Bibliographies on the Negro in the United States." It preceded both Schomburg's BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CHECKLIST OF AMERICAN NEGRO POETRY 1916 and Work's own NEGRO YEAR BOOK 1925. This third edition is the only edition of Du Bois's bibliography listed by Work. WORK p.632. The Atlanta University Press hardcover books‎

Fourth Printing. 16 Illustrations in full color and 12 in black annd white by William Pène du Bois. 12mo. William Pène Du Bois 1916-1993 author and illustrator was born in New Jersey and spent most of his childhood between the United States and France where he attended the Morristown School in New Jersey and boarding school in Versailles. He claims that a great influence in his life is the circus: "I must have gone to the circus more than the average child; I believe thirty times a year was my usual quota . . . All of this love of the formal excitement of circus life must have somewhat influenced my life and choice of career." He does admit though the fact that his father was an artist the American painter and art critic Guy Pène du Bois his mother Florence Pène du Bois a children's clothing designer and his grandfathers a writer about book design and an appraiser of art objects probably influenced him as well. "I seem to have taken the line of least resistance." He described his own book design philosophy as emphasizing the pictures more than the text with "very little description in my stories. I try to make them jump from chapter to chapter like a program of vaudeville acts full of rather unusual action from the far reaches of our globe." During his long career Pène du Bois was honored with the coveted Newberry Medal 1948 and twice with the Caldecott Honor Award 1952 and 1957. Viking unknown books‎

‎DU BOIS REYMOND Emil 1818 1896.‎

‎De Fibrae Muscularis Reactione Ut Chemicis Visa Est Acida. Commentatio qua ad audiendam praelectionem pro loco in facultate medica rite obtinendo Die XXVI. Mensis Martii Hora I.‎

‎Berolini:: Georgium Reimer 1859. 1859. 4to. 43 1 pp. Early plain brown wrappers. Ownership embossed stamp on title. Very good. Scarce. First Edition of the author's lecture that proved tetanized muscle yields an acid reaction.

"These observations may have played a part in his discovery of glycogen in muscle a few years later. Du Bois-Reymond in 1859 recorded that fresh resting muscle had a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction which changed to an acid reaction on activity or death." – Dorothy M. Needham Machina Carnis; The Biochemistry of Muscular Contraction in its Historical Development Cambridge University Press 1971 p. 41.

"When stimuli are thrown into muscle with sufficient rapidity contractions overtake one another sum their effects and maintain the muscle against extending forces in a position more or less of maximum contraction. Such continued contraction is called a tetanus the laws of which belong to the physics of the muscle." – Arthur Gamgee A Text-book of the Physiological Chemistry of the Animal Body . Volume 1 London 1880.

"Emil du Bois-Reymond is the most important forgotten intellectual of the nineteenth century. In his own time 1818–1896 du Bois-Reymond grew famous in his native Germany and beyond for his groundbreaking research in neuroscience and his provocative addresses on politics and culture." – MIT Press.

"When du Bois-Reymond began his investigations neurophysiologists were divided. Some followed the physician Luigi Galvani 1737–1798 in ascribing the action of nerves and muscles to vital powers of "animal electricity." Others sided with the physicist Alessandro Volta 1745–1827 in believing that the muscular contractions that Galvani observed were an artifact of electricity generated by the contact of metal with organic tissue Pera 1992; Piccolino 1998; Piccolino and Bresadola 2013. Recognizing value in both positions du Bois-Reymond solved the problem of contact electricity set forth a program of biological reduction and demonstrated the electrical nature of nerve signals. In a little less than two years- from March 1841 to January 1843- he created the discipline of electrophysiology. – Finkelstein "Mechanical neuroscience: Emil du Bois-Reymond's innovations in theory and practice." – Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience 30 September 2015.

Bakken Books and Manuscripts of the Bakken p. 177; Haymaker Founders of Neurology pp.179-181.
