Otto in Texas.
New York Viking Press. 1959. No it's not a nautical book but I can explain - honest! One of the other books in the "Otto" series was "Otto at Sea" which somehow I thought I owned only to discover that if this was ever a sea book it morphed mysteriously into a dry-land tale in which Duke and Otto visit a Texas tycoon who offers Duke $1 million for the pooch. Marvelous adventures ensue. Speaking of marvelous this is a marvelous copy of the first edition text and dust jacket in fine condition not price-clipped with a sticker from Page Books - Hi Maggie! - on the plastic protective dust jacket cover.

New York books

Black Reconstruction: An Essay Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America 1860-1880.

Thick 8vo dust jacket 12 746 pp. Black cloth lettered in white on spine Some dampstaining to jacket on reverse bleeding through minor chips and tears at edges reinforced with tape from reverse hints of sunning; light bumps at spine ends a few light stains to cloth small wrinkle on front pastedown evidently in original binding; very good or better in like jacket. Signed by Du Bois on the front free endpaper. First published in 1935. Black Reconstruction in America is a history of the Reconstruction era by W. E. B. Du Bois 1868-1963. In this somewhat scarce title Du Bois offered a significantly different view of from the standard academic view of Reconstruction at the time the Dunning School which contended that the period was a failure and downplayed the contributions of African Americans. Du Bois argued directly against these accounts emphasizing the important role and blacks played during the Civil War and Reconstruction. He believed that this period held promise for a worker-ruled democracy to replace a slavery-based plantation economy.
S.A. Russell, books
