LGBTQ Le secret du Chevalier d'Éon. Original 1959 French-Italian film based on the story of 18th century transgender icon From 1777 d'Éon claimed to be anatomically a woman and dressed as such. According to Wikipedia there are only two earlier movies created with transgender themes however this movie would be the first to portray the historical heroic achievements of a real openly transgender icon showcasing her adventures fighting and spying for France and Russia all while concealing her true identity. This very early and serious attempt at portraying a complex transgender hero didn't fare well at the box office partially because the subject matter was too complex for it's time and most of the money was spent on production rather than marketing making this original promotional material very scarce. This collection features an original movie theater lobby card poster measuring 14" x 22" showcasing a fully colored illustration of the Chevalier in both men and women's dress with Russian Cossacks in battle and d'Eon in multiple action sequences. One promotional and one smaller lobby card 12" x 19" and 6.25" x 12" are fully illustrated the larger promo in blue and yellow with black and white photographs from the film featuring the Tsarina and Cossacks. The second lobby card in bright red and black and white illustration shows full fledged horse and carriage battle. Very good condition overall. unknown

LGBTQ Le secret du Chevalier d'Éon film poster 1959 large scale original movie poster measuring 47" x 63". One of the earliest large poster of a Cross-dressing icon. Fully illustrated in color the headline translates to "Male or female A disturbing enigma." Overall very good condition and very scarce. The poster shows a dynamic Chevalier d'Eon painted brightly in pink and blue wielding a sword and shielding an enemy slain from the French Cavalry seemingly on the hunt for her behind. This poster is emblematic of the special envoy missions handed to d'Eon throughout her life as a soldier and spy. Poster is folded 16 times overall very good condition unknown

Original green printed wrappers bound over tan title page inscribed on the half-title by the author; one chromolithographic frontispiece. Rare early French monograph on the military career of the Chevalier d’Éon 1728–1810 one of the earliest gender-nonconforming public figures to attain international notoriety. D’Éon was a soldier diplomat and spy who transitioned from male to female later in life. Though assigned male at birth d’Éon publicly lived as a woman for decades and has since been canonized as a transgender icon with scholars continuing to debate the nuances of their identity. This volume written by French diplomat and economist Octave Homberg Sr. draws upon previously unpublished archival material including diplomatic correspondence and regimental records to reconstruct d’Éon’s life as a dragoon captain a secret envoy to the Russian court and a double agent under Louis XV.<br /> <br /> Illustrated with a hand-colored frontispiece after a contemporary print by Roman de Montfort depicting d’Éon in uniform on horseback. The volume is inscribed on the half-title by Homberg. This publication evidences a rare turn-of-the-century recognition of d’Éon’s historical importance at a time when few European scholars were willing to seriously address gender variance outside of pathology. Rare with OCLC locating only 4 copies in North America at the time of this writing. Wrappers exhibiting significant loss at edges with front cover separated. Interior complete with moderate age-toning to paper clean throughout inscription clear and bold. Good to fair condition only. Scarce inscribed copy of a pioneering work on gender nonconformity in military and diplomatic history. unknown

D’Eon.†Small ivory card stock signed in ink using the feminized honorific “Mlle†consistent with D'Eon’s legal recognition as a woman under Louis XVI beginning in 1777 2 Portrait engraving titled “The Chevalier D’Eon.†Clipped from an unidentified illustrated newspaper. The image shows D'Eon in old age presenting as female wearing a ruffled cap and medal of the Order of Saint-Louis the latter confirming D'Eon’s military rank 3 Engraving of “The House of the Chevalier D’Eon at Tonnerre.†London: European Magazine March 1 1791. Engraved by W. Thomas published by Sewell. Matted. Shows the front of D'Eon’s estate in Tonnerre France. The engraving was published during D'Eon's final years in England when D'Eon lived in reduced circumstances but remained a source of enduring intrigue. Exemplifies the sustained public fascination of English society in D'Eon's personal life.<br /> <br /> Overall very good condition. This is a rare archive of materials relating to the life gender identity and cultural representation of one of the earliest publicly recognized gender-nonconforming figures in Western history. These materials reaffirm D'Eon's personal and public feminine identity which has been called into speculation by some showing that D'Eon both identified herself in writing and was presented in contemporary publications as a woman. unknown
