(Australian Colonies) [Wakefield, Edward Gibbon]
England and America. A Comparison of the Social and Politcal State of Both Nations
London: Richard Bentley New Burlington Street 1833. First Edition. xii 331 1; iv 341 1 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Contemporary quarter tan calf and marbled boards. Ticket of R.E. Narby Bookseller & Printer Warminster. Bookplate. Fine. First Edition. xii 331 1; iv 341 1 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Following imprisonment Wakefield began to study colonial affairs of Australia with an eye towards immigration. Recognizing that the depressed condition of Australian affairs was due to a lack of efficiency and sensible handling he gathered his theories for correcting the problems and first published them in “A Letter from Sydney†London 1829 under the name Robert Gouger. It was so well done that the author was supposed to be an immigrant. He revised and refined these views for his “New Colonization System†in “England and America†as the chapter the “Art of Colonisation.†The theories for his “System†were to abolish free grants of agricultural land requiring a fixed price which would be kept low enough so that a laborer would be able to purchase land after a few years this to reduce the number of ex-convicts laborers from receiving land for which they had no use to regulate immigration and to use tax monies from the rental of grants to bring laborers to the colonies. One of the main results of his publications and efforts was the founding of the National Colonization Society and then the South Australian Association the latter intended to be based upon Wakefield's theories. He was also a close advisor to the Molesworth Committee. On the appointment of Lord Durham to Canada in 1838 Wakefield became interested in that territory and is credited with having greatly assisted Durham with his famous “Report on the Affairs of British North America.†He also acted as an adviser to Sir Charles Theophilus Metcalfe in Canada in the 1840's. In 1837 Wakefield had formed the New Zealand Association and spent most of years following directing the affairs of the association from England while his brother William Hayward Wakefield directed and managed it from New Zealand. Kress C3643; McCulloch's “Literature of Political Economy†1845. p 94; Sabin 100976; Palgrave III p. 648; Goldsmiths' 27890 Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street unknown

Written and published while Wakefield was serving a three year sentence in Newgate Gaol for abduction it first appeared as letters to the 'Morning Chronicle' from August to October 1829. Although Wakefield was not the originator of the theory of systematic colonization 'his was one of the earliest and clearest visions of an empire-by-consent' Pike. In this influential work he 'argued that if settlement were concentrated waste lands of the crown could be readily sold and the proceeds applied to the emigration of labourers preferably young married couples thereby giving maximum population relief in Britain and ensuring a balanced fruitful colonial society. Sufficiency of labour and a congenial society would attract capital encourage emigration assure prosperity and justify the rights of a colony to elect representatives to its own legislature' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'.
The map in this copy is from the first issue dated 29 October 1829.
Provenance: Dr Robert Edwards AO 1930-2023; earlier 'withdrawn' stamp of Lincoln's Inn Library; with the bookplate of lawyer and antiquary Charles Purton Cooper KC 1793-1873 who in 1834 'presented to Lincoln's Inn Library two thousand volumes on civil and foreign legal works having previously presented a hundred and fifty volumes of American Law Reports' biographical fact-sheet from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Kent accessed on the United Industrious Lodge 31 website. The Collected Works of Edward Gibbon Wakefield
London: Collins 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. London Collins 1968. Octavo 1040 pages. Cloth a little bumped at the extremities; endpapers a little foxed; edges slightly marlked; a very good copy internally excellent with the excellent dustwrapper slightly bumped. Edward Gibbon Wakefield 1796-1862 author and colonial promoter 'was an enigma to his contemporaries as he is to posterity. Denied office by his criminal record in 1827 he was sentenced to three years imprisonment in Newgate he devoted his energy to schemes for systematic colonization and responsible government. Not content only to influence men's minds by his pen he sought directly to influence their actions as well. His personal magnetism and imaginative zeal won him many converts but much disappointment when he found that people could not be controlled like puppets.
His idealism would not allow him to compromise and when he ignored the principles of others their reactions were often bitter. In his restless search to achieve his objectives he ranged through the whole spectrum of English politics and society utilitarian radicals Whigs and High Church Tories and left behind him some claim to success in penal reform immigration to New South Wales the Durham report and the colonization of South Australia and New Zealand. The factious conclusion to his career and his obscure death have given to his life a certain tragic perspective although some writers have credited him with high rank as an architect of the British Commonwealth' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. London: 'Printed for C. Knight' 1835. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London 'Printed for C. Knight' 1835 second edition/ 1834. Duodecimo viii 252 3 'List of Publications relating to Australia' 1 colophon pages with 2 woodcuts after William Westall and 3 charts plus a folding map of part of South Australia 200 × 250 mm with an inset map of Australia. Green watered cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; cloth a little marked sunned and bumped at the extremities with minimal wear at the head of the joints; folding map creased marked and lightly foxed with a split along the stub well clear of the printed surface neatly sealed; a very good copy internally excellent. Two appendices totalling 32 pages are new to this edition; they contain 'a copy of the South Australian Act; and the regulations made by the South Australian Commission for the disposal of lands in the colony; for the preliminary sales of colonial lands in this country; and for the emigration of labourers'.
Ferguson 2068 noting a small advertising slip tipped in on the front free endpaper not present in this copy. The slip gives the address of the Office of the South Australian Association 'where all persons intending to emigrate are requested to apply'.
Provenance: an early ownership signature 'J. Allen' is written in ink at the head of the title page. It is possible this is James Allen 1806-1886 pioneering Australasian newspaperman. Born in Birmingham he 'had trained as a Baptist minister but worked as a reporter for the "London Morning Post" where he was associated with writers including Charles Dickens. He first came to South Australia in 1839 and was editor of the "Southern Australian" for a period then owned the "South Australian Register" from 1842 to 1845.
He established a number of mostly short-lived newspapers and journals including Adelaide's first literary journal the "South Australian Magazine" and one of the earliest illustrated journals the "Monthly Almanac and Illustrated Commentator". Allen returned to England in 1845 where he travelled giving lectures about South Australia but was back in Adelaide in 1848 when he established the "Times" .' consult 'SA Memory' online for the rest of the interesting potted history of Allen's life.
