BEBEK, BORNA
Santhana; One Man's Road to the East
London, Bodley Head. 1980, First. (ISBN: 0370302605) Cloth, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Biographical, 224 pp. illustrated dustwrapper with author astride a horse on the front, and rear panels. "An adventurous and observant traveller, forever open to strange encounters and new experiences, Borna Bebek set off one summer night in 1977 from his native Yugoslavia and headed eastward with little luggage and less money. Riding horseback across the steppes of Afghanistan he was attacked by bandits but fought them off. In Karachi he joined an American adventurer in raising a sunken yacht, 'refitting' her and sailing her under jury rig to Thailand - from where they were soon to be expelled after an affray in Bangkok. They sailed to Mauritius where they parted, Bebek tiring of the lotus life. He roamed the length and breadth of India, and not far from Pun on the Bay of Bengal his travels would have ended prematurely on the banks of a river where a crocodile lurked: he woke in time to watch the carnage as four dogs fought with the predator. The last part of the narrative takes him to the heart of his quest, his search for santhana dharma for the underlying meaning to life as experienced by a young Westerner today. At Pun he entered an ashram to study yoga under a revered guru, but the intensity of the experience ultimately sapped his strength, and the story ends in a hospital. Constantly alert and questioning, advancing to meet every new experience with a youthful enthusiasm, Bebek instils into his narrative a recurring sense of wonder and pleasure at his gradual discovery of a new world outside of and within himself. " (dustwrapper blurb). Good/Good.
