FREZIER, (A.F.).
RELATION DU VOYAGE DE LA MER DU SUD AUX COTES DU CHILI, DU PEROU, ET DU BRESIL. FAIT PENDANT LES ANNEES 1712, 1713 & 1714. AMSTERDAM, PIERRE HUMBERT, 1717.
2 vols. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed and gilt, gilt inner-dentelles, g.e. Engraved frontispiece and title in red & black, repeated in second volume. 27 engraved plates, of which 19 folding, showing maps, cityplans, plants and flowers, activities of the local people etc. XX, 1-294; (2), 297-600 pp. Second French edition of rare and often praised work by Amedee Francois Frezier. The first edition which was issued a year earlier in Paris was in one 4to volume. An important work because of the exactness of the descriptions and maps. Frezier (1682-1773) left France in 1712 and returned there in 1714 with large amounts of information about his travels to Brasil, Peru and Chili. His contributions to knowledge of botany and mineralogy were considerable, his contributions to the geographical knowledge, however were of great importance, because he rectified a lot of topographical positions on the maps as they were known until that moment. Our Amsterdam-edition contains a "Memoire touchant l'etablissement des P.P. Jesuits des les Indes d'Espagne", a relation of missionaries in Paraguay. This text is not by Frezier. It originally appeared at Amsterdam as a separate publication in 1712. Beautiful set. Sabin 25924; Chadenat 3221, 5372, 5981, 6605; Borba de Moraes I 328.

WAARBY KOMT EENE VERHANDELING OVER DEN AART EN DE GEWOONTES DER NEGER-SLAAVEN. AMSTERDAM, GERRIT TIELENBURG, 1770.
2 vols. 4to. Contemporary three quarter calf with spine richly gilt decorated, red morocco title label and a green morocco volume label. 6 folding engraved maps and plans, 6 engraved full page plates and 2 engraved folding views, 1 engraving in text. 1 blank, (2), XII, (4), 520; (2), 521-962, (16) pp. Untrimmed large-paper copy of the first and only edition of the classic work on 'Guiana', the North coast of South America, covering primarily modern Guyana, Surinam, parts of French Guyana and northern Brazil. The book contains very interesting and thoroughly accounts of the geography and history of the regions, customs and habits of the natives, flora and fauna; discoveries of the Spanish, French, Portuguese and Dutch voyagers and their settlements and colonization, the commerce of the Dutch West India Company, and the Company of Berbice, the Surinam Society and the slave trade. Warden (Bibliotheca Americana) calls it "by far the best work ever published on the countries described". Several hundred pages provide transcriptions of numerous original documents of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, including a 1662 land grant proclaimed by Charles II on behalf of English settlers establishing there in 1650, with parallel English and Dutch texts. There are five maps: Guiana, Essequebo and Demerary, Berbice and Canje, Surinam, and the rivers Corentin, Copename and Sarameca; four plans of forts and towns (the first together with a view on a single plate): Fort Nassau, Redoute Wieronje, the New retranchement near Nieuw Amsterdam in Rio Berbice, and Fort Nieuw Amsterdam); three views (redoute St. Andries and Samson, Fort Nassau in Berbice, Paramaribo and the Fort Zeelandia) and two representations of native men. All are finely engraved by Jacob van der Schley. The engraving in the text shows one coin and two blank circles.J.J. Hartsinck (1716-1779) was an official of the admiralty in Amsterdam and a member of the Zeeland Academy of sciences; later he became a director of the Dutch West India Company. He had ready access to many documents which are now lost, and he also made extensive use of the papers of his father, who had been director of the Surinam Society for 25 years, and of oral and manuscript accounts by several local officials. For these reasons, his book will always remain an essential primary source for the history of the regions. The work is dedicated to Stadholder Willem V. In 1784 a German translation of the first volume only was published in Berlin.Sabin notes the existence of large-paper copies. The present copy, printed on unwatermarked Medium paper surely qualifies, having untrimmed lower and fore-edge margins of about 5 cm. Fine uncut large paper copy.- (First half of vol. I sl. browned). This copy has always been in the same family, never removed from the library and is untouched by the trade! Fresh and clean copy as it was in 1770. JCB (1700-1800) 1742; JFB H-41; Sabin 30712; Suriname-catalogus 2560; Tiele 457; not in Borba de Moraes; Church; Eberstadt; Streeter.

VARNHAGEN, FRANCISCO ADOLPHO DE, VISCONDO DE PORTO SEGURO.
HISTORIA DAS LUTAS COM OS HOLLANDEZES NO BRAZIL DESDE 1624 A 1654. NOVA EDICAO MELHOARADA E ACRESCENTADA. LISBON, CASTRO IRMAO, 1872 (1874).
8vo. Contemporary half red morocco, gilt spine with title lettered in gold. (5), VI-XXXI, XV, 401, XIII, (4) pp. Second enlarged edition of this very important and interesting work on the colonial history of Brazil during the years 1624 - 1654, including of course the activities of the Dutch and the history of their possessions in Brazil, by Francisco A. de Varnhagen. The many notes and documents Varnhagen had added at the end of the first edition in 1871, were - except for the transcriptions of five original documents (p. I-XIII) - incorporated in the text. The work went to the printer in 1872 but did not come of the press until mid 1874. Just before this second edition appeared, Varnhagen wrote a 15-page ''Post-facio'' , dated Vienna, 7 May 1874, responding to certain assertions in Candido Mendes de Almeida's Memorias do Maranhao. Varnhagen had the post-facio printed so it could be bound in the new edition after the preface (as it is here). Borba de Moraes and Horch both call for a plate in this edition, the same as the one in the first edition, but Rodrigues, describing an actual copy, does not mention one. Good copy presented (by the author?) to Mario Lyster-Franco, whose ex-libris is pasted to the inside of the front cover; with the label of the bookbinder Jose' a Catella at Evora.- (Some sl. foxing at places). Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 883; Blake II, 377; Bellido 47a; Horch 65; Rodrigues 2435.

AVEZAC-MACAYA, ARMAND D'.
CONSIDERATIONS GEOGRAPHIQUES SUR L'HISTOIRE DU BRESIL. EXAMEN CRITIQUE D'UNE NOUVELLE HISTOIRE GENERALE DU BRESIL RECEMMENT PUBLIEE EN PORTUGAIS A MADRID PAR M. FRANCOIS-ADOLPHE DE VARNHAGEN CHARGED'AFFAIRES DU BRESIL EN ESPAGNE. RAPPORT FAIT A' LA SOCIETE' DE GEOGRAPHIE DE PARIS DANS SES SEANCES DES 1ER MAI ET 5 JUIN 1857. PARIS, L. MARINET, 1857.
8vo. Modern three quarter red morocco with marbled boards and ribbed spine, lettered in golf; the original wrappers are bound in. Two folding maps, one of (the greater part of) South America, esp. Brazil and one showing the estuary of the Amazon river. (4), 271, (1) pp. First separate edition of this interesting account on Brazil by Marie Armand Pascal d'Avezac de Castera-Macaya (1800-1875). It is an abstract from the Bulletin de la Societe de Geographie (the Aout-Octobre 1857 issue) with a separately printed new title. This copy was presented by the author to 'La Societe Orientale': his autograph dedication in ink is on the front wrapper and a library stamp of the Societe Orientale on the title. In this work d'Avezac disputes several of Varnhagen's views concerning the period of the discoveries. He does not agree the Vespucci's second voyage was made in the company Hojeda. Varnhagen defended his position in his Examen de quelques points de l'histoire geographique de Bresil (Paris, 1858). He believed that d'Avezac disagreed with his opinions because he supported the French assertions that the boundaries of French Guyana should stretch to the banks of the Amazon. D'Avezac replied to Varnhagen in Les voyages de Americ Vespuce au compte de l'Espange ... (Paris, 1858). It is also a criticism of Varnhagen's work about Vespucci's first voyage. Good presentation copy. Borba de Moraes I, 57; Sabin 2491; Rodriques 301; not in Welsh nor in NUC.

MIDDELBURG, GEBROEDERS ABRAHAM, 1816.
8vo. Contemporary blank paper wrappers. Woodcut illustration of a ship sailing towards probably the harbour of Rio de Janeiro on title. 16 pp. Very rare leaflet, giving a precise day by day report of the journey of the Dutch ship Nassau, sailing under the command of captain Sloterdijk, until the day of arrival in Rio de Janeiro on May 26th, 1816. The work starts with the appointment of the writer, who remains anonymous, as civil servant at the East Indonesian possessions of the Dutch state on Java on January 2, 1816. The ship sets sail from the harbour of Vlissingen to Rio de Janeiro on March 29, 1816. That same day an apprentice fell overboard and drowned. In the morning of April 1 the ship got stuck at the reef of Calais and ended up in trouble until they were assisted by an English ship who helped them on their way again. The following days expired, despite of some heavy winds and rain, without much problems. On April 10 a thief was exposed who had stolen property from the passengers: bound to a lattice-work, he was condemned to 100 whiplashes. The island of Tenerife, Gomera and Palma, Ferro were passed on April 11. Two days later, a two-year old child died who was given a naval funeral the day after. On May 1, Aurora was reached and on May 22 they finally reached the Brazilian coast at Cape Frio. Four days later the journey ends with the arrival in the harbour of Rio de Janeiro. The report of May 27 a.o. tells of the city and it's roads and houses, churches and monasteries, the royal library, palaces, the opera house and stock exchange, the shipyard, the people, fortresses and the bay of Rio de Janeiro. 8vo. Original marbled wrappers. Folding engraved map of the Amazon region titled: 'Carte du cours du Maragnon ou de la grande riviere des Amazones', engraved by G.N. Delahaye. (4), XVI, 216, (4) pp. IDEM. (1), 108 pp. First edition of the travel account on a voyage through Brazil on the river Amazon written in a lively and picturesque style by Charles Marie de la Condamine (1701-74), French geographer, astronomer and mathematician. In 1735 La Condamine was appointed to lead an expedition to South-America, especially Peru, its primary intention being to determine the precise lenght of a degree of longitude in the region of the equator. The expedition was granted permission by the Spanish king Philip V and was joined by two Spanish scientists and naval officers, Juan and Ulloa. Next to La Condamine, Bouguer, Godin and Joseph de Jussieu, were the other French academicians involved. The expedition took over a decade. For the return home, the leaders of the expedition decided to follow different routes in order to add to the value of their reports, La Condamine choosing the dangerous course of crossing Brazil by navigating the Amazon. His account of this journey was "of great importance, because for the first time the long course of the Amazon was traversed by a man of science capable of making astronomic observations, and determining longitudes." (Borba de Moraes). One of La Condamine's preoccupations was to verify the existence of the women known as 'Amazons''. The engraved map of the river accompanying the text was drawn by La Condamine, and is the first in which the latitudes were observed. It also shows by dotted lines Father Sebastian Fritz's inaccurate charting of the river, and is the first to feature the course of the Araguay. Ad 2: First Edition. Appended to the Relation is an account of a riot in which the members of the expedition were involved during a bull-fight at Cuenca. At this event in the year 1739 the surgeon of the King, Semiergues, was lynched by a mob in a bull-fight arena after gallantly defending the hour of a girl. The Relation and Lettre appear to have been issued both separately and together. Good copy. This is a presentation copy by the author sent to Baron Cloots, dated 26 February 1746'.- (Frontwrapper restored; library stamp on verso title 'Bibliotheca Collegii maximi traiectensis'; waterstain on title). The first part is dedicated by the editor Hannardus van Gameren to William, Duke of Bavaria (the preface, f. 2r-13, is dated Louvain, 1st of January 1569). It starts with fragments from the letter by Franciscus Xavier (1506-1552), the founding father of the Jesuit mission in India, Japan and China, of 14 January 1549, written in Coccini (f. 14r-16v) and a letter by Xavier to the Jesuits in Coimbra from Cogaxima, 5 November 1549 (f. 16v-30r). On p. 158-176 follow the letters written from the Moluccas by Petrus Maskarenhas in 1564; on p. 177-186 the letters written from Brazil by Emanuel Nobrega in 1552, and on pp. 187-310 an extensive letter by Jacobus Navarehus on the conditions in Asia and Japan written in Louvain, 1 December 1568. A last unnumbered leaf contains the errata and the printer's device. The very interesting and popular collection of these early Jesuit letters from Japan, India, the Moluccas and Brazil is not only important for the history of the Jesuit mission in those parts of the world, but also for the history of those countries and religion, customs and traditions of the Japanese, Indian and Asian peoples. 8vo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with black title-label, double gilt fillets on sides. With engraved portrait and 5 fine engraved coloured aquatints depicting views and costumes of Korea. (10), 323, (1) pp. Second and best edition of the account by the ship's surgeon of the 'Alceste' of the British Embassy to China headed by Lord Amherst. Rio de Janeiro, of which interesting observations are made on pages 6-15, the Cape of Good Hope and Batavia were visited by the expedition before reaching China. The Embassy was dropped, and the ships sailed on an expedition to explore the west coast of Corea and the Ryukyu Islands. The sailors visited the island of Liu-Kiu (now Okinawa). The native people, who met with Europeans for the first time, were very hospitable. Three of the five plates in the present work depict portraits of natives: Islanders of Sir James Hall's group; Korean chief and attendants; and Lewchewan chief and attendants. So the Embassy of Lord Amherst had become a failure, since Lord Amherst refused to greet the Emperor by kow-tow. After being picked up at Macao by the returning ships, the company visited Manila. When the 'Alceste' sailed home a submerged reef in the Gaspar Strait was struck, and the ship was completely wrecked. But everybody reached a small island nearby and survived. Lord Amherst went to Batavia with one of the other ships to get help. There is a long and vivid account of the sailors being attacked by Malay pirates, and of their final rescue. On the return voyage, St. Helena was visited. An interesting report is given of an interview with Napoleon. McLeod describes Napoleon as follows: "Although there was nothing descending in his manner, yet it was affable and polite; and, whatever may be his general habit, he can behave himself very prettily if he pleases. He is by no means so corpulent as is usually represented, and his health appears to be excellent". The present work was received enthousiastically. Together with Captain Basil Hall's "Account of a Voyage of Discovery to the West Coast of Corea", 1818, it was described in the Edinburg Review (quoted in Abbey) as: "We do not know when we have met with two more pleasing works than this very delightful account of the people of Loo-Choo, and Mr. McLeod's animating and ennobling story of the loss of the Alceste, and the deliverance of the crew. They make us proud of our country, and put us in good humour with our species". Good copy.- (Head and tail of spine rep.; sl. foxed). Cordier, Japonica, 468; Borba de Moraes 507; Hill 188; Abbey, Travel, 559; Lipperheide 1529; Hiler 559.
