‎Collection of eleven snapshots from the Middle East.‎

‎Iraq 1920. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. With 11 snapshots all ca. 6 x 9 cm. Collection of 11 snapshots from the early 1920s likely taken by a British soldier stationed in the Middle East. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where these photographs were taken but presumably in Mesopotamia present day Iraq. Great Britain was actively involved in Mesopotamia from 1914-1932. Prior to the First World War a large portion of the Middle East was in the hands of the Ottoman Empire. However when the Ottomans sided with Germany in 1914 Great Britain sent forces to Mesopotamia to protect the Anglo-Persian oil fields. The British army initially suffered a major defeat but eventually gained the upper hand and captured Baghdad in 1917. In 1920 after the Ottoman Empire was partitioned the United Kingdom formally established control in the region under a mandate of the League of Nations. However the Iraqi people resented this idea and revolted. In 1922 Great Britain and Iraq then signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty in which Iraq was given the right for self-government while Great Britain stayed in control of the country's foreign policy. This would last until Iraq's independence in 1932.The present snapshots were taken in the early days of British control in the region and depict the atmosphere at the time. They show the daily life of locals including women collecting water from the river men standing guard and the hustle and bustle in the streets. Also included are various group photos of British soldiers and locals. The photographs show some traces of wear around the corners and edges but are overall in good condition. unknown‎

‎Collection of thirteen press photographs.‎

‎1930. Kept in a brown kraft paper envelope. With 13 gelatin silver prints various sizes. A collection of thirteen press photographs from the 1930s showing Saudi Arabian leaders during diplomatic visits to Europe. The beautifully sharp and clear photographs give a good impressions of what these events must have been like at the time. Most of the photographs come with the text that would have accompanied them when they were published in a newspaper and are stamped on the back by the press agency that had the rights for publication. We have not been able to find any of these photographs in online archives.Four of the images show Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud 1906-1975 during a diplomatic visit to Great Britain. Faisal was the third son of King Abdulaziz the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. Faisal was very intelligent and was given numerous important duties as a result. He was sent on a five-month long diplomatic visit to Great Britain and France when he was just 13 and achieved his first military successes when he was 16. He succeeded his half brother as king of Saudi Arabia in 1964 and became a well-loved ruler. The present photographs however show his visit to Great Britain in 1939. In particular his visit to the Royal Air Force stations in Middlesex and Northolt where he viewed the Hawker Hurricane planes which he considered to buy for the Royal Saudi Air Force. After his return however he decided against it.The other photographs show Fuad Bey Hamza 1899-1951 the Saudi ambassador in France and Fakry Pacha dates unknown the Egyptian ambassador in France during an Eid al-Fitr celebration in Paris in 1939 a portrait of Sheikh Sir Abdullah al-Salim al-Sabah 1895-1965 the 11th ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait and the Kaaba in Mecca during hajj. Some of the photographs are slightly discoloured or creased around the corners. Mostly in very good condition. unknown‎

Remarkable collection of twelve photographs showing daily life of a community in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait in a time before oil wealth. The photographed people are likely all members of the same family. The moving images show the children engaged in wool spinning playing music on homemade instruments or posing in front of a wooden shed with their mother. The men are shown playing music and engaged in falconry. The beautifully captured portraits truly offer a glimpse into the lives and personalities of these people. All photographs are signed and dated by hand. They must have been made by a skilled photographer but the signature is unfortunately unclear. ‎[PHOTOGRAPHY - ENGINEERING - IRAN].‎

‎Collection of 19 engineering photographs in Iran.‎

‎Iran 1928. Oblong album 24.5 x 29.6 cm. Mid-19th-century bright blue faux-leather the front board features a pictorial on-lay within a rectangular frame the illustration depicts a young woman in traditional costume holding a large ceramic vessel. The joints are laced through onto 2 supports. With 19 black and white photographs ca. 23.1 x 17.1 cm on thick dark blue/black paper. 9 ll. Collection of 19 engineering photographs taken in Iran dating from ca. 1928 to 1930 CE. The majority of the images are annotated with the year 1308 AH 1929-1930 CE while only photograph 7 is dated 1307 AH 1928-1929 CE.The album documents large-scale engineering works and urban modernisation in Iran during the early years of the Pahlavi dynasty 1925-1941 under Reza Shah Pahlavi 1878-1944. In this period cities such as Tabriz underwent significant restructuring and infrastructural development as part of broader state-led reforms. The photographs depict surveying activities including measuring instruments mounted on tripods uniformed officials and extensive reconstruction works. Several photographs are identifiable as views of Tabriz including the development of the Gaji Gate Darb-e Gajil in December 1929 Ahrap Ahrab Street and Munjam Street under construction. Other views show street levelling and widening works illustrating the transformation of older urban quarters into broader modern thoroughfares.Further noteworthy subjects include railway works and one photograph taken in Jafarabad shows several men wearing a combination of traditional clothing including papakha-style headgear and Western clothing reflecting the broader cultural transition of the period. The present work therefore stands as an informative visual record of early 20th-century Iranian engineering urban renewal and state modernisation. With some glue staining to the dark blue paper on several pages. A few photographs show minor marginal wear not affecting the images themselves. The final photograph is not mounted on the album paper but on a separate piece of card and is loosely inserted. Collection of 12 vintage photographs from the late 19th century showing China Indonesia the Hawaiian Islands California and Egypt. Of the 4 photographs of China 2 show Hong Kong including one possibly by the famous Chinese photographer Lai Fong ca. 1839-1890 showing Queen's Road Central. The two rarest photographs show several of the 7500 imperial examination cubicles in Canton Guangzhou while a photograph by A Chan Ya Zhen shows the famous five-story pagoda on Kun Yam Hill in 1870. The Indonesian island Java can be seen on 3 photographs including one of lake Telaga Warna by the British firm Woodbury & Page based in Batavia Jakarta. Taken further to the west were 3 photographs of Hawaii probably all taken in or near Honolulu. A rare undated photograph of the statue of King Kamehameha was taken probably right after the unveiling ceremony in 1883 as it shows a small wooden fence around the statue which can be seen in an illustration in The Graphic 28 April 1883 but is absent from all later images. Of the 2 final images one by Isaiah West Taber 1830-1912 shows Midway Point in Monterey California and the other by Hippolyte Arnoux fl. 1860-1890 a group of Arabs and camels waiting for the ferry near El Qantara in Egypt. Large oblong folio 30x41.50cm.; commemorative postbound photo album of brown blind-embossed cloth; 29 grey card leaves to which are mounted 30 original photographs measuring ca.15x24cm or the inverse to 30x24cm all captioned in neat manuscript Russian though the opening statement on front pastedown in manuscript Lithuanian of the same hand. Corners a bit bumped pastedown endpapers starting to peel from boards light occasional soil to leaves leaves cockled from exposure to glue else Very Good the photographs all in near fine condition.

Collection of neatly compiled but rather amateurish photographs taken during the 50th anniversary of the Russian Revolution celebration in the Lithuanian spa town of Druskininkai featuring members of both the military the Young Leninists Komsomol and the Pioneers. The earliest photos show the visit of Anna Vasil'evna mother of the fallen hero Petr Naboichenko at the company with which he served her face shown weeping before an oversized portrait of her son. Vasil'evna reappears in one more photograph towards the end of the album sitting in a classroom surrounded by listeners as she wipes her eyes with a handkerchief.

The photos also depict the march to the burial place of Naboichenko at which is held a rally of soldiers and members of the Pioneers in memory of those who fell during the liberation of Druskininkai. Other photos show members of the party in an empty field "the site of a fierce battle" our translation. The final photographs promote the importance of the press as a man in military uniform reads from the day's newspaper to a small cluster of soldiers some of them looking as young as fourteen. The final photo taken at the evening's banquet show a four-man military band on maracas bass accordion and guitar the caption describing them as the prizewinners of a televised competition. ‎Composite Photograph of 100 Portraits of Actresses c. 1860‎

‎Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1860. Carte de visite measuring 2 ¼ by 3 ½ inches on heavy cardstock. Wear to both photograph and mount overall very good to excellent. Though Dadaists are frequently credited with the invention of photomontage techniques involving combining multiple photographs into a single composite image have been around since at least the mid-Victorian era.1 These could be made by combining negatives or by combining prints and then re-photographing the result so that it looked seamless. Offered here is an example of early composite imagery published by F. L. Moore of Philadelphia consisting of portraits of women numbered 1–100. It seems to be a reproduction by Moore of an 1860s “theatrical portrait gallery†of actresses’ portraits produced by C. D. Fredericks & Co. of New York City; note that Moore is identified verso as an “Importer & Publisher of Cartes de Visite &c.†not a photographer. An interesting early example of photomanipulation.

1 Robert A. ‎[PHOTOGRAPHY - EGYPT]. ZANGAKI BROTHERS‎

‎Cover title: Aegypten 1891.‎

‎Egypt: Zangaki brothers 1891. Original gold-stamped bubble-grained maroon cloth over boards modern maroon cloth spine and leather corners. Gold stamped title and year on the front white watered silk endpapers. Oblong album 31.5 x 41 cm. With 34 large albumen prints mounted on heavy cardstock leaves. Most of the photographs are numbered and captioned in French in the negative and signed 'Zangaki'. The last one is signed Sebah & Joallier. The Zangaki prints measure 22.5 x 28.5 cm; the Sebah & Joallier one is 20.5 x 26.5 cm. A large German album with 34 albumen prints of Egypt. The Greek brothers G. and C. Zangaki were photographers who worked in Egypt in the second half of the 19th century. Due to increased tourism to this region after the opening of the Suez Canal there was a large demand for souvenir photographs. Photographers like the Zangaki brothers as well as Sebah & Joallier catered to this. The Zangakis were among the first commercial photographers to produce large-scale images of Egypt. They travelled through the country with a portable darkroom to capture high-quality images of famous monuments and daily life though the latter were usually posed. These images were then printed and sold to tourists either separately or compiled into albums. According to John Hannavy the brothers "produced some of the finest images of late Victorian Egypt". The 34 photographs include: the great pyramid Cairo and the Nile dervishes and other exotic looking locals Egyptians standing on top of the sphinx obeliscs the Ramesseum Karnak temple the temple of Dendera the Great Pyramid Egyptians climbing the pyramid the mosque and tomb of Muhammad Ali Saqqara and many others. With two small library stamps on the first page not affecting the photograph. The book has been rebacked. The left side of the front board has faded and the corners are worn. Minor browning around the edges of the leaves. Back flyleaf loose. The photos are crisp and clear and the book is otherwise in good condition.l Erdem Views of Egypt by Georgios and Constantinos Zangaki: Examining a late nineteenth-century photographic album at the Art Gallery of Ontario thesis 2006; Hannavy Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography pp. 1036 1093 & 1521. ‎[PHOTOGRAPHY]. POUNCY, John‎

‎Dorsetshire Photographically illustrated. By J. Pouncy. The detail and touch of nature faithfully reproduced by a new process on stone by which views are rendered truthful artistic and durable‎

‎London. Dorchester: Bland & Long. John Pouncy Photographic institution 1857. Four parts in two volumes. 90; 82pp. Lithographic title to Vol I. terminal advertisements and colophon leaves to each volume all included in preceding collation. With 79 photo-lithographic plates one of which double-page. Original publisher's limp cloth decorated in blind and titled in gilt; Vol II neatly recased in the original binding at an early date. Some rubbing tearing and a little marking to binding; loss to spines. Sporadic spotting to text and images occasional marginal tears including to endpapers and repairs only touching the image on two plates. Inscriptions to each front endpaper of 'Mrs Michel' of Whatcombe House featured in this volume and described as 'not distinguished by any remarkable feature' but as beautifully situated with 'adjacent grounds extensive and picturesque'. An unsophisticated copy of the most important study of Dorset country-houses from their golden age which was also the first - and only - major English book produced in photolithography and is as such a milestone in the history of permanent photographic reproduction. It was described by Gernsheim as 'not only the first but remained the only attempt in book form to reproduce photographic views from nature by photolithography' and by McLean as marking a 'transitional stage between drawing and unretouched photography'. As is explained by English photographic pioneer John Pouncy 1818-1894 in both the introduction and advertisements of this present volume the fading nature of early photography was the revolutionary illustrative median's greatest weakness: 'astonishing as is the effect and almost perfect as is the beauty of some of these works of art permanency is found wanting' or in short 'Photographs very generally fade'. Thus between the conception and completion of this photographic study of his beloved native Dorsetshire Pouncy called 'in the aid of another art that of Lithography; and thus without forfeiting the exactness which is the peculiar characteristic of the one to ensure the quality of durability which is unhappily wanting to it by means of the co-operation of the other' and so 'the views which were originally announced as Photographs will now appear as Photo-Lithographs'. As the reproduced excerpt from a contemporary Poole newspaper review highlights Pouncy's devised process involved transferring long-exposure 'photography to stone and then re-transfers it to paper'; a service that he also here advertises as available from his Dorchester studios. Non static-features were added in by hand giving a rather ghostly appearance. The process must necessarily have been both time-consuming and expensive and each part of this work published by subscription was advertised originally at the price of £1 1s or £5 5s for the planned whole the fifth and sixth of which were never published. Subscribers included the poet William Barnes and many of the owners of the houses featured in the book. Not pure photographs but not simply hand-drawn lithographs either his process produced images truly symbolic of the Victorian artistic compact between mechanisation and manual labour; no book could claim to more truly occupy the threshold between photographic and lithographic illustration. An album with 58 photographic prints including one tinted varying in size 20.5 x 15.5 to 27.5 x 21.5 cm each on thick paperboard. 58 ll. Album containing 58 photographic prints depicting scenes and sights in Spain and Portugal. Subjects of the prints vary. From the El Escorial the historical residence of the King of Spain to the interior of the cathedral - and former mosque - of Cordoba. The prints also show the exterior and interior of the bullfighting arena in Madrid. 2 of these 3 prints show bullfighting in action. A little more than half of the prints contain captions revealing the location depicted in the photograph such as the scenic views of cities such as Madrid Barcelona and Seville. The subject and/or location of the prints without captions remain unclear but some are very likely sites in Portugal since all of the prints with captions are in Spain.According to the captions the photographs of Seville were taken by E. Beauchy a Spanish photographer from the same city. He photographed the region of Andalusia south Spain at the end of the nineteenth-century. Some prints of Madrid and Barcelona were produced by printers of Spanish graphic art Hauser and Menet in 1896 and 1897.With an Antwerp bookseller's ticket on the front paste-down. The binding shows some minor signs of wear mostly around the spine and corners of the boards. Slight foxing/browning of the outer edges of the paperboard not affecting the photographs some photographs have slightly faded edges which does not interfere with the actual image. Octavo ii frontispiece ii title leaf vi 118 vi book review pages with 2 mounted albumen paper photographs one is a frontispiece portrait of Stephenson 87 × 57 mm; the other is of a sketch presumably by Stephenson 103 × 57 mm. The book review reprinted from the 'South Australian Register' December 28 1865 has been folded down the middle before being bound in. Full morocco now expertly rebacked all edges gilt contemporary but probably not original - we have only seen blind-stamped cloth before; corners worn front and rear covers a little scuffed; overall a very good copy. One of the earliest Australian imprints illustrated with original photographs see Holden: 'Photography in Colonial Australia' Sydney 1988 where the author is incorrectly referred to in the text and index as Stevensen. The first essay the St Peter's Collegiate School Prize Essay of 1864 is entitled 'The Difficulties of Colonization in the Northern Territory' 17 pages; another two pages are devoted to the importance of the acquisition of the Northern Territory to South Australia. Almost half the book 58 pages is given over to verse by Stephenson who died at the age of 18 in May 1865. Inscribed on an early blank in what we know to be the hand of Charles Todd to 'Mr Edwd Stirling Junr / Xmas 1865'; with the pictorial bookplate 'Gang forward' of Edward Charles Stirling. Ferguson 16245; Holden 103. We have previously sold a copy inscribed by Todd to his daughter on 4 December 1865 in which the review was loosely inserted as an eight-page pamphlet. ‎1932. PHOTOGRAPHY Imada KINGO editor. HANZAI KAGAKU Vol.3 #7 1932 JUNE. Published in Tokyo by Bukyosha. 8vo. size printed wrappers. This magazine was only published for a short time though it managed to include stories by important literary figures wonderful photomontage and avant garde photo foldouts strange erotica tales of urban life reports on "sexual life among the proletariat" etc. etc. Under the broad rubric of "ero-guro nonsensu" the literary and artistic scenes of pre-War Japan as embodied here in CRIMINOLOGY MAGAZINE explored the margins. This is the seventh number of the third year of its publication. As might be expected the editor Imada Kingo was a multitalented writer and artist both who became best known for his children's stories. With wear at the tail of the spine else very good.
