BAHAR YÖRÜKOGLU.
Bahar Yörükoglu. Flow through.= Devri daim. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Süreyyya Evren, Ilkay Baliç.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 125, [2] p., color and b/w ills. Bahar Yörükoglu. Flow through.= Devri daim. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Süreyyya Evren, Ilkay Baliç. In her practice, Bahar Yürüko¿lu brings together the extreme ends of the natural and the human-made, where the urge for reconciling the two creates new spaces that the artist calls neo-scapes. The coming together of these two binaries offer seductive compositions, in which an unabashed embracing of colour, a genuine appreciation of material and a playful use of light entice the viewer into a space where expectations can then be subverted. "Flow Through" takes as its departure point Bahar Yürüko¿lu's experiences during her travels to the Arctic Circle in 2015, both in the summertime, when the sun doesn't set, and during the winter months, when darkness prevails. In the exhibition, the artist creates fictional spaces based on the dualities she observed in the Arctic region; blurring the boundaries between presence and absence, past and future, nature and civilisation, as well as cyclical movements and inevitable transformations, these installations, photographs and videos test the viewer's perceptive capacities, and demand that the dichotomy between the subject and the object is set aside. "Plexiberg" (2016) is a complex layering of material and light where the light emitted from the lens of the projector, bounces off of the surfaces of the physical objects, creating an immersive maze and a visual riddle. Playing heavily with the translation between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space, this deconstructed iceberg is accompanied by the sounds of melting ice from the Arctic. The artist's embrace of sensory experience is further amplified in "Pingo" (2016), in which changes in floor elevation demand from the viewer a heightened awareness of the surrounding environment. The soundscape that alternates between birds chirping, the faint techno music from a car radio and the familiar sound of snow crushing under the weight of someone walking that accompanies this installation further simulates the uncategorizable geography of the Arctic landscape, between a desaturated terrain and cultural depository, which the artist characterizes as a "future perfect world." Yürüko¿lu's photographs that follow these installations cut into the supposed fact of the photographic image by complicating it with filters, reflections, disjunctions, collapsing and expanding the picture plane. These unaltered exercises in trompe l'¿il also signify an effort to overcome the limits of Cartesian space. The coda of the exhibition is the non-linear video "The Navigator", in which a flâneuse from the future perfect or the past continuous wanders in the natural landscape, the interiors of buildings in the deserted Soviet town of Pyramiden near Svalbard, or rides on the bus, perhaps a kind of figurative Arctic express. Her ceremonial gestures and primordial signals typify a striving for existential mark-making however transient, or a hope at communication, mimicking the cyclical motions of life, as we flow through.

Koç Collection.= Hanedan ve kamera. Osmanli Sarayindan portreler. Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu. "Dynasty and the Camera: Portraits from the Ottoman Court" exhibition will be held on 8 January - 29 May 2011. The exhibition consists of a selection from the Ottoman portrait photographs from Ömer M. Koç collection shows the high level of technical and artistic terms of photography by the interest of the Ottoman imperial family. This exhibition marks the importance given by the Ottoman sultans, other members of the royal dynasty and statesmen in the 19th century and includes the photographs of Prince Ömer Faruk the son of Caliph Abdülmecid, Nazime Sultan the daughter of Sultan Abdülaziz, Fehime Sultan the daughter of Sultan Murad V, Prince Yusuf Izzeddin the son of Sultan Abdülaziz, Sultan Murad V, Prince Mehmed Selim the son of Sultan Abdülhamid II, Prince Mehmed Seyfeddin and Esma Sultan the children of Sultan Abdülaziz. During the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, who acceded to the throne in 1861 and was keenly interested in various branches of fine arts, Ottoman portrait photography reached a pinnacle of achievment in both technical and artistic terms, thanks to the skill of the Abdullah Brothers, who specialised in portrait photography. Vasilaki Kargopulo, who was appointed as court photographer in 1878, two years after Sultan Abdülhamid II came to the throne, contiuned to take similarly high quality portraits of the royal family and statesmen. As ameteur photography gained momentum from the turn of the century onwards, members of the royal family began to take their own photographs, the number of family photographs taken in private areas of royal residences increased significantly. Some members of the Ottoman royal family were particularly interested in portrait photography, notably Caliph Abdülmecid Efendi, Heir Apparent Yusuf Izzeddin Efendi, and the royal princes Ömer Faruk, Mehmed Selaheddin and Osman Fuad, who had their portrait photographs on various occasions from their childhood onwards, and pioneered this interest among other members of the royal family as expressions of loyalty and friendship continued for many years. Robertson: Photographer and engraver in the Ottoman capital. Ömer M. Koç Collection.= Osmanli Baskentinde fotografçi ve hakkak. Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu.
New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (32 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. 243 p., color and b/w ills. Robertson: Photographer and engraver in the Ottoman capital. Ömer M. Koç Collection.= Osmanli Baskentinde fotografçi ve hakkak. Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu. Robertson, one of the most notable names of nineteenth-century photography, received his vocational training in the London Royal Mint and remained the chief engraver of the Ottoman Imperial Mint for forty years, serving four successive sultans including Sultan Abdülmecid and Sultan Abdülaziz. He prepared designs, molds and models for gold and silver coins and in the 1850s also started to develop an interest in photography. James Robertson is the first photographer working in Istanbul known to have taken the first 360° panoramic photographs of the city. He gained much renown with his Istanbul photographs, as well as with the photo series he produced of Athens in 1854, of the Crimean War between 1854 and 1855, and of Jerusalem and Cairo, which he prepared in 1857 and which were displayed in exhibitions in London and Paris. 'Robertson, Photographer and Engraver in the Ottoman Capital' features not only his outstanding works for the Imperial Mint, but also reveals his mastery and manifold talents as an artist capable of creating stunning photographs and watercolor paintings of his adopted city's colorful life, of its unique scenery, and its matchless monuments and art objects. The exhibition also includes numerous photos from Athens, the Crimea, Jerusalem and Cairo. An accompanying exhibition catalogue, prepared by Bahattin Öztuncay and designed by Yesim Demir, presents Robertson's biography alongside his works.
