He is best known for his tinted photographs of dreamy worlds filled with naked or half-naked figures against a peeling wall, often reproducing the same elements and symbols. This was partly out of sheer necessity because he only had the cellar at his disposal and could not store much stuff in it. His photographs are reminiscent of mid-19th century erotic photography and the work of painters such as Balthus and Bernard Faucon. In his early days it is mainly about depicting youth, later the theme shifts to the development from youth to adulthood and old age (following the subject in the same composition over several years). Religion and the ambiguity between man and woman are also recurring themes in Jan Saudek's work. His work became the subject of censorship in the West in the 1990s

Dit boek beschrijft op een begrijpelijke manier hoe men de meest voorkomende fotografische en fotomechanische procedés van 1839 tot heden kan herkennen. Het is bedoeld voor iedereen die te maken heeft met historische foto´s: werknemers van archieven en musea, kunsthistorici, verzamelaars en ook degenen die oude familiefoto´s op een verantwoorde wijze willen bewaren. Kennis van deze procedés is van belang voor het herkennen, dateren, conserveren, rubriceren en eventueel exposeren van allerlei soorten fotomateriaal. Fotograaf en fotohistoricus Jan van Dijk beschrijft niet alleen wanneer en hoe historische procedés, zoals de daguerreotypie, de autochroom, de albuminedruk en vele andere, tot stand zijn gekomen maar hij laat tevens zien hoe men deze procedés kan herkennen en dateren zonder de originele afdruk aan te tasten. Opnamen op glas en kunststofdragers, afdrukken op verschillende soorten fotopapieren maar ook foto´s op materialen als keramiek en glas passeren de revue. Nieuw in de Nederlandse fotoliteratuur is de aandacht die Van Dijk besteedt aan kleurenprocedés en digitale afdruktechnieken vanuit een oogpunt van herkenning van hun materialen en structuren. En passant maakt hij duidelijk hoezeer de ontwikkelingen in de fotografische techniek hebben doorgewerkt in wetenschap, commercie en allerlei takken van industrie. Het boek is voortgekomen uit de cursus Determineren van Fotografische Procedés en Druktechnieken die vanaf 1992 werd gegeven aan het prentenkabinet van de Universiteit Leiden door de auteur in samenwerking met foto- en drukhistoricus Johan de Zoete. De eindredactie van de tekst was in handen van Ingeborg Leijerzapf, jarenlang werkzaam bij het Leidse Prentenkabinet als conservator fotografie.
