Lexington: Holman & Gray 1851. Hardcover. 12mo. Quarter black calf with compartments and gilt lettering and marbled paper over boards. iv 200pp. Very good. Tight-hinged and fully handleable though mildly edgeworn and with marbled boards rubbed; text block lightly age toned and occasionally foxed; contemporary ownership signature on front pastedown same on inner flyleaf and pencilled at top of title page; ca. 1900 bookplate on front pastedown. First of this edition tight and fairly nice being a revised edition of his 1850 "Treatise on Daguerreotype." In 1851 upstate New York minister Levi L. Hill 1816-65 caused controversy when he claimed to have developed a process to create color photographs which he called "heliochromes" and which soon became personalized to "Hillotypes". It wasn't until 1856 that Hill published his "Treatise on Heliochromy" to explain the process but a daguerreotypist got the book banned on grounds of libel and all but a few were pulped. Hill's process was long discredited then forgotten although recent scientific tests show that his convoluted process works somewhat. A decent copy of this rarity. A second edition revised and enlarged was issued in 1854 by Myron Shew in Philadelphia and this later edition too is extremely scarce. Holman & Gray hardcover

Quaint early bookplate on front pastedown depicts a chimp crouching on a stack of tomes chin in hand as he ponders the skull in his other hand. A tight and lovely first edition in an attractive early 20th century rebind. Very scarce early manual by influential early daguerreotypist Samuel Dwight Humphrey 1823-83 first editor of the "Daguerrean Journal" and author of the 1849 "A System of Photography Containing an Explicit Detail of the Daguerreotype" and one other photography manual all three of which went through several editions. CATALINA ISLAND TRAVEL PHOTO ALBUM CIRCA 1890
Very good. An album containing thirty 4" x 4" black and white photographs of Catalina Island at the turn of the century. Four of the photographs are laid in; the rest are secured in the album with photo corners built into the pages. There are no markings in the album or on the photographs with the exception of a stamp noting that the photographs were printed by Merick Reynolds Co. on Broadway in Los Angeles. The album contains a variety of images of men women and children in Victorian dress and a few coastal shots. Notably the album includes a photograph of two women climbing up the steep wooden ladder of Sugarloaf Rock in Avalon Harbor. Remarkably they are in Victorian dress with long skirts. Sugarloaf Rock was graded and blasted away to make way for a hotel where ultimately the Catalina Casino was built in 1919. The album also includes a photograph of the S.S. Hermosa at the long pier in Avalon Harbor. The Hermosa according to an article in the 2007 Catalina Islander newspaper was launched in 1888 by the Wilmington Transportation Company and was the largest and most elegant vessel of its kind on the West Coast. It was a wooden ship 141 feet in length and capable of carrying 150 passengers. The well-known Hungarian Orchestra usually accompanied passengers on the almost three-hour crossing. She was decommission in 1902 stripped of her luxuries and burned in Avalon Bay during a 4th of July celebration. The album is bound in gray heavy paper wraps. All in very good condition. unknown
