Paris: Arts et Métiers Graphiques. Softcover. Good. Collection of 11 of 12 published photography annuals issued by the bi-monthly art magazine Arts et Métiers Graphiques between 1930 and 1947. The first of these appeared in 1930 as Arts et Métiers Graphiques No. 16 after which they were published as stand-alone special issues. 1933-1934 appeared as a single volume and no issues were published after 1940 until 1947. This is a near-complete run lacking the 1939 issue. Each issue measures 12" x 10" and is spiral bound and each is extensively illustrated with high quality reproductions heliogravures of b/w photographs from many of the most influential photographers of the period including Man Ray Cartier-Bresson Moholy-Nagy Kertesz Sougez Tabard Brandt Beaton Penn Outerbridge Boucher and others. All issues are complete but they have a mild musty odor no mold or mildew visible and the following defects in addition to general cover wear including small chips tears or creases: 1931 -- old water damage to upper corners extending 1/4 inch from the edge at the widest point; 1932 - similar water damage at upper corners more pronounced at first and last few pages but only extending about 1/8 inch on most pages; 1933/34 -- this volume has the most water damage to the upper corner and outer margin most visible on title page and cover generally not affecting the images; 1935: very small amount of dampstaining visible to upper corners; 1936: abrasion to outer paper on front cover; 1937: cover missing a large chip and detached; 1947: rear cover detached light rippling to last few leaves. Overall a serviceable reference set of this scarce and important publication priced accordingly. Please see the numerous images available on our website for a full sense of condition. Paris: Imprimerie Charaire at Sceaux. 1890. 1st edition. 5 original issues of the serial format -- published in fifteen pa rts. . original issues of this serial publication depicting the events and destruction of the Paris Commune -- photographs of barricade s destroyed buildings battle scenes. Each issue has eight or ni ne photographs. Accurate bibliographic information is scarce bu t we believe there were fifteen issues published -- subsequently bound in book form. The bound volume was published in1890 and the se serial parts were probably published shortly before. While t he bound volume is reasonably common and has recently been repri nted these original parts are scarce. From the introduction: â Many volumes have been written about the Commune: some to defend it others to attack it. We wanted to bring simply and without c omments the photographic reproduction of the men and things of th e Commune the only documents incontestable. We collected from al l sides from all sources the materials likely to enlighten publ ic opinion: their authenticity is not debatable and it is perhaps the only living testimony of the events that followed the Franco -German war. The original photographs of 1871 leave much to be de sired from the point of view of preservation and sharpness as t he turning and instantaneous processes were still in their infanc y. Nevertheless we wanted to reproduce them faithfully without the slightest touch which would have distorted their character." Condition is good overall. The photographic pages are all comp lete and in very good-fine condition. Covers are damaged.##### .
