Photography : Butterfly Funerary
Photograph Album of a Butterfly Funeral
Cleveland Ohio ca. 1940. Hardcover. 8vo. Commerical album. Blue textured paper covered boards. "Photograph Album" stamped in gilt to front. Red platic comb binding. 3 card leaves with 6 approximately 5" x 7" silver print black and white photographs loosely fit into rectos and versos beneath plastic overlayments. 5 of 6 prints with photographer's stamp to verso: "Carl Louis Vargo." Prints easily removable 1 with moderate wear. Album with mild exterior wear. Otherwise clean well preserved.

An exceedingly strange photograph album documenting the funeral of a monarch butterfly in 6 clear and enlarged black and white views. The photographs were taken by a Carl Louis Vargo b.1930 of Cleveland. The images were likely executed about 1940 given print qualities and the child-like ornately staged funerary set assembled from discarded household mateials: aluminum foil as a background covering a hand-executed sign reading "VARGO'S FUNERAL HOME" a Bulova watch case as casket with a scrap square of carpet beneath etc. 4 show the elaborate decorations 2 show the casket being lowered into the ground. A handful of similar Cleveland-area butterfly funeral albums found in OCLC and a 2008 auction sale at Ketterer Kunst "Vinder Begrafenis" nearly tripled its total high estimate for the more than 400 butterfly funerary items many of them photographic offered there otherwise an apparently scarce and particularly unusual document. hardcover

Wedding Photographer Proof Archive
Cambridge Maryland ca. 1950's. 229 black and white silver print photographs. Each double weight bordered prints. Some slight unobtrusive curling about edges of most. A trivial defect here and there overall each well preserved. Group about near fine.

A substantial archive of wedding photography proof photographs produced by an R.R. Scott of Cambridge Maryland for 12 different weddings. Contents are undated though print qualities dress etc. place the entirety firmly in the 1950's with all the optimism of the post-War era fully on display in this delightfully awkward archive of Americana photography. The addition of Scott's bold 'PROOF' stamps over the image areas provide a desirable effect to our modestly attuned eye one almost certainly the opposite of origina intent. An endlessly endearing archive of unfiltered and outtake Americana. unknown

Enlarged Photograph of a Young Stevie Wonder
Philadelphia Pennsylvania ca. 1965. Single weight black and white silver print photograph. Approximately 11" x 14" on branded Agfa paper. Some mild waviness to print otherwise about very good.

A dynamic performance photograph of a young Stevie Wonder. Captured by a competent amateur Philadelphia photographer named Ian N. Field b.about 1949 the photograph is not explicitly identified though was acquired by us in a small archive of Field's work which appears to have been captured around 1965 when he was a freshman at Temple University. Archived concert dates suggests the Motortown Revue which Wonder was a part of at the city's Convention Hall on October 2 1965 as a likely match for the image. An uncommon original 1960's concert photograph of a giant in American music. unknown

Waldo Stein. In addition to Stein a single print with pencil notation identifies the recurring subjects "Firestone" likely Harvey Firestone Jr. "Brownie Carslake" a noted jockey of the era and "Joe Dawson" race driver and winner of the 1912 Indy 500. Mansfield Ohio ca. 1955-1957. 4to. Metal plastic comb binding. Textured yellow card leaves self-wrappers. Autograph title to front in red wax pencil. 37 black and white photographs the majority approximately 3 1/2" square snapshots loosely fit into corner mounts to rectos and versos of 8 leaves. An additional 12 snapshot prints laid in loose along with a stray magazine clipping. 49 photographs total. Some mild handling wear to exterior a few prints appear perished. Overall about very good.

An excellent album of automotive-themed vernacular photography compiled by a Paul Clark of Mansfield Ohio in the 1950's. The album opens with about 12 views of various motorcycles and passenger cars owned by Paul and his family though the majority of the album mounted and loose prints document his career as a middling stock car driver at various small town tracks in Ohio including Ashland Attica and Tiffin. The racecar shown here is most often a number 24 likely a series of 1930's modified American production coupes converted into jalopy-type racecars and sponsored by Park Avenue Sunoco of Mansfield. A somewhat later laid-in clipping from an unidentified racing magazine identifies Paul by last name suggesting he moved up into the sprint car circuit and archived records show him impressively having run four races in the 1963 NASCAR Grand National series the top stock car circuit of the era including at Daytona and Atlanta. unknown

"Rub Out the Axis" Photo Negatives
Akron Ohio: Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. 1942. 17 large format black and white photographic Kodak Safety negatives. Each approximately 8" x 10." Some trace wear from handling otherwise about near fine.

An archive of Goodyear Co. file negatives documenting original printed and graphic materials produced for the company's "Rub Out the Axis" propaganda campaign including publicity for a June 28 1942 War Bond rally held by the corporation at Akron's Seiberling Field and dubbed the "Rub Out the Axis Rally." Archive highlights include images of original artwork for a series of posters featuring Goodyear Wartime products attacking caricatures of Hitler Mussolini and Hideki Tojo in the case of Tojo a severely racist exaggeration. The campaign appears to have been a mostly internal one with posters and printed materials displayed and distributed within the Goodyear factories and offices as surviving examples of anything shown here appears rare. These negatives were acquired by us from a longtime Goodyear employee who salvaged them from a dumpster during the firm's 2012 move out of its original corporate headquarters. The University of Akron holds numerous photographs of the June 28 rally crowd and a single negative view of similar artwork likely once part of this group in its Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company Records collection otherwise we note no additional holdings and no commercial records of "Rub out the Axis" materials in usual reference. A rich surviving group of corporate American propaganda campaigns. [Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.] unknown

All about fine.

A small archive of snapshot photography accompanied by an original event flyer from the 1979 "Big Yank II" truck pull held in September of 1979 at the Portage County Fairgrounds outside of Akron Ohio. Nighttime photographs often with blurred headlights capture the competition along with participant and spectator culture in more than 40 fine photographs to an undeniably artistic albeit likely naive effect. Great Lakes Illinois / Mout Vernon Iowa: Office of Public Relations Photographic Section Navy Department ca. 1943. 11 sepia-toned silver print photographs. Uniform single weight bordered prints each approximately 8" x 10." 10 of the 11 with typed descriptive snipes on thin copying paper stapled to print corners. Ink stamps of Office of Navy Public Relations to versos. Staples mildly rusted. Overall photographs well preserved. Very good-plus.

A suite of 11 different training photographs of Navy Cadets enlisted in the temporary Flight Preparatory School on the campus of Cornell College in Mount Vernon Iowa likely about 1943. The photographs are well executed and clear with a clear group highlight being a pair of rather provocative views of exercise including a group scene featuring dozens of soldiers in the midst of a calisthenics workout and a shot of two shirtless Cadets traversing an obstacle course. From the snipe stapled to the verso of the latter: "Two husky Navy men . take the obstacle course at the Navy Flight Preparatory School Cornell College Mt. Vernon Iowa. After sucessfully completing the three months ground school at Mt. Vernon these men will move to pre-flight school where they will receive more physical hardening exercises ground work and their first flying hours." We find no record of holdings of the group or individual photographs nor do we locate publication of any via a dilligent reverse image search of google. Dundee Scotland: J.A. Valentine ca. 1880's. Albumen print cabinet card photograph. Image area approximately 14cm x 10cm. Studio lettering faded at extremities "J" in "J.A. Valentine" worn. Area of scuffing to blank card verso. Otherwise well preserved. About very good-plus.

A clear and impressive albumen view bearing the stamp of prominent 19th Century Scottish photography studio J. Valentine of Dundee. The outdoor image is of a group of 22 men posed as though a team with a row seated on the ground and a row standing behind. One of the seated men is holding what appears to be an early rugby ball a large and round type which would have been prominent in about 1880 an era print qualities and dress suggest to us this was likely captured during. The presence of an unusually high and fortified fence with a row of men in black uniforms perched atop it in the background and the general appearance of the men pictured particularly the lack of any team uniform evokes a prision yard though aside from the stamping of "J.A. Valentine" and "Dundee" at the card's right margin nothing is explicitly identified.
