Spine professionally and attractively restored. All edges gilt. 11.5 inch crack across front board. The embossed faces on the front board are missing and it looks as though someone has tried to drawn in one of the faces. Previous owner's brief inscription on the front free endpaper. Leaves with 48 striking hand-tinted albumen prints 19 cm x 25 cm. Each leaf has two images one on each side. Tissue guards in between. Very occasional light foxing to the images. Folio. 30 photographic prints from original glass plate negatives each print mounted 16 x 20 inches. viii pp. booklet with explanatory text and list of plates for each volume text by Peter F. Dorman John Coleman Darnell and Susan Lezon. Housed in three cloth clamshell boxes by Claudia Cohen. Small dampstain to volumes II & III box with some staining in vol. III to mounts and booklet confined to margin some fading to clamshell boxes prints fine with extraordinary detail and tonal gradation. A portfolio of limited edition photographic prints from the Epigraphic Survey's archive of over eight hundred large-format glass plate negatives taken in Egypt between 1880 and 1930 for the tourist trade by photographers such as Antonio Beato and the Zangaki brothers. Printed at Chicago House the field headquarters of the Survey in Luxor. "Unlike other methods of reproduction in which an artificial light source is used on a mass-production basis the glass negatives have been exposed individually to direct sunlight on printing-out-paper resulting in minuscule differences among the prints. Each print was then toned in a gold chloride solution. Great care has been taken to produce prints that would have resembled closely those that one might have purchased while journeying through Egypt in the nineteenth century" p. vi. Images include ruins of ancient monuments details of carved and painted temple walls fleets of feluccas palm groves and formal salon poses and ethnographic portraits of Egyptians and Nubians. 1912. Panama Canal Early Photography Two large albumen photographs of the construction of the Panama Canal 1912. Photographs are pasted down to grey cardstock with captions and articles describing the imagery below. Photos measure 11" x 14". The building of the Panama Canal was not met with ease as the former French owned project was abandoned due to lack of investment and a high worker mortality rate and the grappling of territory between Panama Columbia and the United States. In 1903 Panama gained it's independence and as the United States recognized this Roosevelt used buying power to his advantage to funnel millions of dollars towards Panama and the funding of this project. These two photographs are early large scale displays of the massive amounts of land and infrastructure that went into this long awaited project. One photograph shows the Culebra Cut in June 1912. The article pasted to the front states that "To remove the 105000000 cubicyards of earth from the backbone of the Americas required about 6000000 pounds of high-grade dynamite each year to break up the material.in which time some 19000000 pounds were exploded in Culebra Cut only eight men were killed." The second photograph dated January 1912 shows the Miraflores Upper Locks with a diagram of what the final construction would look like. The photograph shows a partially built sill multiple tracks for hauling material heavy duty cranes and other industrial equipment. Thousands of local men were hired for this dangerous and underpaying job over the course of a decade. These Caribbean workers endured poor working conditions low wages and unbearable temperatures for a government that was not theirs over 5000 becoming casualties. By it's opening ceremony in 1914 The Panama Canal was the most expensive project in US history estimated at $350000000. These early photographs show only a portion of what went into this costly construction. Minor wear to edges of board upper right corner of one is chipped. Images are crisp and clear overall very good condition. unknown

Wrappers rather rubbed old marker annotation to both covers—"Pro Girl Wrestlers in Nude Bowl"—with "C— D— Stomped in Nude Pro Wrestling" in pen to front. Contents about fine. Very Good overall.<br /> <br /> A series of twenty-two blurry snapshots taken of a color television set showing a match between two nude pro women wrestlers. Things seem fairly even until the final four shots which culminate in one woman finally knocking out the other. The end shot captures the victor standing over her collapsed opponent while flexing her muscles over which the compiler a woman in her fifties or sixties has glued on a cut-out photo of herself breasts exposed enjoying the show. <br /> <br /> A crude but humane example of the difficulties of documenting the ephemerality of television that also happens to capture the heyday of a favorite erotic medium which Carmen Electra and pay-per-view tried and failed to resuscitate in the mid 2000s. unknown
