ISBN 9789464366839.‎ ‎Voor de tentoonstelling Vrij belangrijke foto's hebben twee Hermans-kenners uit de bijna 15.000 foto's een selectie van tientallen foto's gemaakt, waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is getoond. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. In de tentoonstelling is een mix van vintages afdrukken en nieuwe prints te zien. De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar Hermans' archief. In het mapje Vrij belangrijke foto's zat een bonte verzameling van 57 afdrukken: portretten van Hermans zelf, zijn ouders en andere familieleden, vrienden plus foto's van affiches, de Arc de Triomphe, huizen in Wenen en het geboortehuis van Nietzsche. ** Als afsluiting van het 'Hermansjaar' 2021-2022, waarin wordt gevierd dat de Nederlandse schrijver Willem Frederik Hermans honderd jaar geleden werd geboren, presenteert het Fotomuseum Den Haag een expositie ingericht met door hem gemaakte foto's. Gelijktijdig verschijnt Willem Frederik Hermans - Vrij belangrijke foto's met een verse selectie uit zijn fotografi sche oeuvre. Het boek en de tentoonstelling kwamen tot stand onder auspici n van het Willem Frederik Hermans Instituut en met in-stemming van de Erven Hermans. Het in principe gesloten archief-Hermans is daarvoor een malig opengesteld voor de gastconservatoren. In 1957, toen zijn roman De donkere kamer van Damokles niet wilde vlotten, heeft Hermans overwogen zich om te scholen tot fotograaf. Hij kocht een professionele camera, mat zich de firmanaam 'Persfotobedrijf W.F. Hermans' aan en ging in de leer bij Nico Jesse, van wie hij ook een oude Leica overnam. Daarmee sloeg hij fanatiek aan het fotograferen in Groningen, Amsterdam en Parijs. Uiteindelijk kreeg de Leica een sleutelrol in zijn roman. Piet Schreuders en Bram Oostveen bekeken alle 4.500 zwartwitfoto's en 9.829 kleurendia's in het archief-Hermans en maakten een selectie waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is gepubli ceerd. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. Met tekstbijdragen van Wim van Sinderen, conservator van het Fotomuseum Den Haag, Piet Schreuders en W.F. Hermans. In zijn inlei ding plaatst Wim van Sinderen W.F. Hermans in de traditie van de Nederlandse fotografie. Piet Schreuders geeft achtergrondinformatie over de gekozen foto's in het essay 'De verlegen fotograaf' en W.F. Hermans geeft een inkijk in zijn visie op fotografie. ISBN 9789075658019.‎ ‎"Hotel Gems of France" is the first in a series of books profiling what one might consider to be the world's dream vacation hotels. To me, it's a perfect scaled-down blend between the "Resorts & Great Hotels" and "Architectural Digest" magazines. There are 34 "gems" in this book, each portrayed in four to eight pages of text and gorgeous photographs. The back of the book contains an excellent section of factual information (e.g., rooms, facilities, activities, location), plus a map of France pinpointing the location of each hotel. I wouldn't necessarily use this book as a travel planning tool unless I had lots of time and was expecting to cover lots of territory. There are probably more than 34 hotels just in the Latin Quarter of Paris, so taking this number within all of France doesn't make for useful comparisons. Also, there are no rate listings for any of the hotels, but I'd guess that the term "upscale" would fairly describe the price, as it surely does the quality of the properties. Still, for those who enjoy superb photography, or who wish to get an introduction to France's beauty, or who might REALLY go on a dream vacation, this is a wonderful book. ISBN 9789461618344.‎ ‎Marten Melsen De kunstschilder Marten Melsen (1870-1947) was van Brusselse afkomst maar woonde heel zijn leven in het landelijke Stabroek. Hij verbouwde er twee aansluitende woningen en kreeg er samen met zijn vrouw 4 kinderen. De twee ongehuwde dochters en n zoon bleven in het huis wonen en hielden het in de staat zoals het was. Aan het atelier van de kunstschilder werd ook na zijn dood niet meer geraakt. In 2002 werd het huis door de familie geschonken aan de vzw Stichting Marten Melsen. 'Het Vosseveld' blijkt een van de weinige nog geheel authentieke kunstenaarshuizen te zijn, samen met bijvoorbeeld het Lijsternest van Stijn Streuvels. Het huis is dringend aan behoud en restauratie toe. Het plan is er om er een museum van te maken. Dit voorjaar werd een dossier ingediend bij de Minister van Erfgoed en werd het huis volledig ge nventariseerd door Monumentenwacht Vlaanderen. Er is echter nog veel nodig en dit mooie fotoboek kan alvast extra aandacht brengen. Een huis met een ziel Karin Borghouts bezocht en fotografeerde het huis voor het eerst in 2017. Een kleine tentoonstelling daarvan was te zien in Galerie De Mijlpaal in Knokke in 2018 en een grote foto uit de reeks was het jaar daarop te zien op het Kunstenfestival Watou. In 2022 kreeg ze de kans om nog meer foto's te maken in het huis. De fotografe werd getroffen door de zeer mooie lichtinval, de kleuren, meubelen en objecten in het huis. Anderzijds deed de woning haar ook denken aan haar ouderlijk huis dat in de vlammen is opgegaan en waarin de verzameling antieke gebruiksvoorwerpen van haar moeder zwartgeblakerde stillevens opleverden, doordrongen van jeugdherinneringen en een verlangen naar een beschermende huiselijke omgeving. Waar Karin Borghouts zich vroeger eerder focuste op publieke ruimtes en gebouwen, zijn het nu vooral persoonlijke interieurs die haar aandacht vragen.
