HARRIS MAZIE M
Paper Promises: Early American Photography
J. Paul Getty Museum Los Angeles: 2018. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Scholarship on photography's earliest years has tended to focus on daguerreotypes on metal or on the European development of paper photographs made from glass or paper negatives. But Americans also experimented with negative-positive processes to produce photographic images on a variety of paper formats in the early decades of the medium. Paper Promises: Early American Photography presents this rarely studied topic within photographic history. The well-researched and richly detailed texts in this book delve into the complexities of early paper photography in the United States from the 1840s to 1860s bringing to light a little-known era of American photographic appropriation and adaptation. Exploring the economic political intellectual and social factors that impacted its unique evolution both the essays and the carefully selected images illustrate the importance of photographic reproduction in shaping and circulating perceptions of America and its people during a critical period of political tension and territorial expansion. Due to the fragility of paper photography from this period the works in this catalogue are rarely displayed making the volume an essential tool for any scholar in the field and a very rare peek into the mid-nineteenth century. 224 pages 9 11 inches 187 color and 20 black-and-white photographs hardcover. Mazie M. Harris is assistant curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Her research focuses on American photography. J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles: 2018 hardcover

MARTINEAU PAUL
Icons Of Style : A Century Of Fashion Photography
Getty Publications Los Angeles: 2018. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. In 1911 the French couturier Paul Poiret challenged Edward Steichen to create the first artistic rather than merely documentary fashion photographs a moment that is now considered to be a turning point in the history of fashion photography. As fashion changed over the next century so did the photography of fashion. Steichen's modernist approach was forthright and visually arresting. In the 1930s the photographer Martin Munkacsi pioneered a gritty photojournalistic style. In the 1960s Richard Avedon encouraged his models to express their personalities by smiling and laughing which had often been discouraged previously. Helmut Newton brought an explosion of sexuality into fashion images and turned the tables on traditional gender stereotypes in the 1970s and in the 1980s Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts made male sexuality an important part of fashion photography. Today following the integration of digital technology teams like Inez & Vinoodh and Mert & Marcus are reshaping our notion of what is acceptablenot just aesthetically but also technically and conceptuallyin a fashion photograph. This lavishly illustrated survey of one hundred years of fashion photography updates and reevaluates this history in five chronological chapters by experts in photography and fashion history. It includes more than three hundred photographs by the genre's most famous practitioners as well as important but lesser-known figures alongside a selection of costumes fashion illustrations magazine covers and advertisements. 368 pages 9 12 inches 176 color and 147 duotone illustrations. HADDOCK MICHAEL JOHN
Wildflowers And Grasses Of Kansas: A Field Guide
University Press of Kansas Lawrence: . Softcover. Brand new book. How do you know when you're face to face with a fringe-leaf ruellia Is that particular flower button gayfeather or dotted gayfeather And what about the pod clinging to your pantscould it have come from a pointed-leaf tick-trefoil For anyone venturing out into the wilds of Kansas and contiguous states identifying plants just got a whole lot easier. This is the first book on Kansas wildflowers or weeds to appear in 25 years. It supersedes earlier guides not only in the number of species it includesplus its coverage of grassesbut also in its spectacular true-to-life color photos. Michael Haddock has assembled a guide to 264 wildflowers along with 59 grasses sedges and rushes. These comprise many of the state's most common and conspicuous speciesas well as some seldom encountered or listed in field guidesand include many that are found throughout the Great Plains. Wildflowers are arranged first by dominant color groups for quick identification then by family within each color category so that the user can compare a species with similarly colored flowers. Each entry for flower or grass includes a complete profile for any given plant: scientific name family common names flowering period height distribution and habitat life span basic morphological characteristics and notes on historical food and medicinal uses where applicable. The book also features "finding aids" that allow one to narrow a specimen to a smaller number of possible matchessometimes more quickly than by comparing it to the photos. These lists were created with the non-specialist in mind and are based on basic vegetative and floral features that are usually easy to determine. Perfect for backpack or glove compartment Wildflowers and Grasses of Kansas offers a wealth of quick-access information graced with color that leaps off the page making plant identification a joy rather than a chore. It's a book guaranteed to send even chronic homebodies out into the Great Outdoors in search of these elusive blooms. University Press of Kansas, Lawrence: paperback

RENNER ERIC & NANCY SPENCER
Poetics Of Light: Pinhole Photography
Museum of New Mexico Press Santa Fe. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The photography of capturing an image through an improvised pinhole device traces back to ancient China and Greece through the Renaissance reaching its height of popularity in the 1880s. The era of the modern sharp-focus lens camera marked the end of pinhole photography as a major art form. Three decades ago Eric Renner resuscitated the form with his publication Pinhole Journal that ushered in a resurgence of interest by artists seeking an alternative often conceptual vision and alternative to sharp-focus photography. Renner and Nancy Spencer have out of this effort built the world's largest collection of pinhole art from 31 countries and 500 of artists comprising 6000 images. Pinhole offers new ways of exploring the world using the simplest improvised mechanisms fashioned of oat boxes sea shells and other surprising materials to create images of mysterious sometimes disturbing beauty in dreamlike landscapes portraits still-lifes abstractions and politically charged images. In pinhole it is the camera object that looks but the artist that sees thus accounting for the considerable mystery and poetry that is pinhole photography. Primitive in technological terms it allows us to visualize things we cannot see. A photograph made with the pinhole camera is always a recording of the cameras "gaze" showing what it looked at not what the human being saw. The photographer no longer constructs subjective representations; he merely assists at the birth of the image. This book along with the accompanying exhibition presents two hundred contemporary images representing the finest artistry achieved in pinhole photography most never before published. Artists Paolo Gioli Italy Shi Guorui China and Bethany de Forest Netherlands join an exceptional roster from Belgium Canada England Finland France Germany Israel Poland and the United States accounting for the comprehensive nature of this monumental collection. 9.5" x 11.5" 112 Pages 190 color photographs plus gatefolds. Eric Renner and his co-author Nancy Spencer are credited with the reemergence of pinhole photography through their publication "Pinhole Journal" and in building a superlative collection of pinhole photography featured here. Bisney and Pickering don't just focus on the iconic images that we all recognize; instead they opened their lens to the machinery behind the missions computers and other hardware the astronauts' pranks and the rank-and-file NASA workers who made it all happen." --Modern Notion Daily "Together Spaceshots and Snapshots of Projects Mercury and Gemini and Moonshots and Snapshots of Project Apollo are a treat for any space buff and for the true believers a reminder that even greater journeys may lie just ahead." --American Scientist "J. GOIN PETER PHOTOGRAPHY: PETER FRIEDERICI ESSAYS
A New Form Of Beauty: Glen Canyon Beyond Climate Change
University of Arizona Press Tucson: 2016. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. In Glen Canyon waters rose inundating petroglyphs and creating Lake Powell. Now the Colorado River basin is experiencing the longest dry spell in modern historyone that shows alarming signs of becoming the new normal. In A New Form of Beauty photographer Peter Goin and writer Peter Friederici tackle science from the viewpoint of art creating a lyrical exploration in words and photographs setting Glen Canyon and Lake Powell as the quintessential example of the challenges of perceiving place in a new era of radical change. Through evocative photography and extensive reporting the two document their visits to the canyon country over a span of many years. By motorboat and kayak they have ventured into remote corners of the once-huge reservoir to pursue profound questions: What is this place How do we see it What will it become Goin's full-color photographs are organized in three galleriesFlora and Fauna Artifacts and Low Waterinterspersed with three essays by Friederici and an epilogue gallery on Fire. The book includes two foldout photographs which allow readers to fully see Lake Powell at high water and low water points Contemplating humanity's role in the world it is creating Goin and Friederici ask if the uncertainties inherent in Glen Canyon herald an unpredictable new future for every place. They challenge us to question how we look at the world how we live in it and what the future will be. "Few have been more dedicated to tracing the past present and future of the American West than Peter Goin whose photographs reveal our place in the landscape with a concerned and knowing eye. Yet never has his work felt more apocalypticLake Powell where we water-skied while Rome burned offers a most fitting backdrop for our dire future. This is a sobering volume and more than ever I feel I am looking at an elegy for the West."Toby Jurovics Chief Curator and Holland Curator of American Western Art Joslyn Art Museum "The desert Southwest is a land of consummate paradox and Lake Powell is in a sense the epicenter of paradox disturbing and beautiful inhumanly vast and yet vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts. A New Form of Beauty is an act of both grieving and celebration. Like the place it explores this work is sublimely unsettling."Scott Slovic coeditor of Numbers and Nerves: Information Emotion and Meaning in a World of Data "This hauntingly beautiful book succeeds as an elegy on what we have lost and an introduction to an uncertain future."Journal of Arizona History "Goin's photographs capture the dissonance of an environment evaporating before his eyes. The photos are infallibly stunning yet haunting."Edible Baja Arizona University of Arizona Press, Tucson: 2016 hardcover
