‎Despite some field research our knowledge of the sacred among the Mumuye is still embryonic. In all these acephalic groups of a binary and antinomic nature, the complex va constitutes an extremely varied semantic field in which certain aspects are accentuated depending on the circumstances. Religious power is linked to the strength contained in sacred objects, of which only the elders are the guardians. Moreover, this gerontocracy relies on a system of initiatory stages which one must pass to have access to the status of 'religious leader'. Geographically isolated, the Mumuye were able to resist the attacks of the Muslim invaders, the British colonial authority and the activities of the different Christian missions for a long time. As a result the Mumuye practised woodcarving until the beginning of our century. In 1970 Philip Fry published his essay on the statuary of the Mumuye of which the analysis of the endogenous network has so far lost nothing of its value. Basing himself on in situ observations, Jan Strybol attempted to analyse the exogenous network of this woodcarving. Thus he was able to document about forty figures and some masks and additionally to identify more than twenty-five Mumuye artists as well as a specific type of sculpture as being confined to the Mumuye Kpugbong group. During and after the Biafran war, hundreds of Mumuye sculptures were collected. Based on information gathered between 1970 and 1993 the author has demonstrated that a certain number of these works are not Mumuye but must be attributed to relic groups scattered in Mumuye territory.‎

Willy Kessels maakte de meeste van deze foto?s in opdracht van architecten, aannemers, bedrijfsleiders, uitgeverijen en voedings- of farmaceutische bedrijven. De collectie bevat ook een artistiek onderdeel met foto?s die aansluiten bij de avant-garde van het interbellum; onder meer zijn befaamde fotocollages. In 1987 verwierven de Archives d?Architecture Moderne (AAM) 7370 zilvergelatine gedrukte glasnegatieven, bewaard in hun oorspronkelijke dozen. Het geheel werd in 1989 aangevuld met 460 monochrome negatieven op glas en plastic en met kleurnegatieven op plastic. In 1991 en 1992 werd de collectie geregeld aangevuld met oude afdrukken en publicaties. Dit fonds maakt nu deel uit van de CIVA collecties. Enkele jaren eerder, in 1981, verwierf het Institut sup rieur d'Architecture de l?Etat ? La Cambre 650 monochrome glasnegatieven en oude afdrukken, waarvan een veertigtal grote afdrukken met foto?s van de school. In april 1987 begonnen de AAM met een eerste identi?catie van 7830 negatieven op basis van het bestelboekje van Willy Kessels en van tijdschriften waarin hij foto?s had gepubliceerd La Revue Documentaire, B tir, Clart of l?Emulation. In 2016 werd begonnen met de digitalisering van 5000 negatieven. Deze actie werd ge?nancierd door het fonds Courtin-Bouch via de tussenkomst van de Koning Boudewijnstichting. De nummering van de digitale bestanden is gebaseerd op die van de dozen van Willy Kessels, zodat er een overeenkomst blijft bestaan tussen het oorspronkelijke negatief en zijn digitale versie. Om het onderzoekswerk te vergemakkelijken wordt dezelfde logica gebruikt voor de opslag van de negatieven zelf, die met de nodige zorgen geconserveerd worden. In 2017 werd een tweede project opgestart voor de identi?catie van de negatieven op basis van onderzoek dat al in 1987 en 1990 was begonnen. Datzelfde jaar werden de 2830 resterende negatieven en de 144 glasnegatieven van de Archives et Biblioth que d?Architecture de l?ULB die worden bewaard bij CIVA, gedigitaliseerd met een subsidie van de Directie van het Cultureel Erfgoed van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest.‎

‎In MO DE, leading international photographer and film-maker Anton Corbijn presents images from his extensive body of work in which he explores the crossover between photography and the world of fashion - in the broadest sense of the word. Corbijn's portraits of figures such as Alexander McQueen, Tom Waits and Naomi Campbell have now achieved iconic status. As visual director behind Depeche Mode and through his decadeslong collaboration with U2 and others, he has made his mark on the way we look at an important aspect of contemporary culture. With MO DE, Anton Corbijn shows that fashion is everywhere. The book features more than a hundred images and collaborations from Corbijn's rich oeuvre, many of them never seen before. The work's world premi re will be in Knokke-Heist, running from 4 April to 5 July 2020. Met MO De bewijst Anton Corbijn dat mode overal is. Dit boek toont meer dan honderdvijftig beelden en samenwerkingen uit Corbijns oeuvre, waarvan vele voor het eerst worden gepubliceerd. Karen Van Godtsenhoven, associate curator van The Costume Institute van het Metropolitan Museum of Art, schreef een tekstbijdrage.
