The Candace Award was a prize given to African-American women of distinction by The National Coalition of 100 Black Women over a ten-year period between 1982 and 1996; the 1984 prize was shared between five women all pioneers in the American civil rights struggle of the 1950s-60s. Photographer Richard Gordon 1945-2012 became well-known for his studies of New York shop windows in the 1960s; he published half a dozen monographs and his works are widely held including at SFMoMA the Art Institute of Chicago and the Corcoran among many others. unknown

Tblisi: NKVD 1938. A magnificent grand-format presentation album ca 35cm x 42cm bound in full calf with heavy gilt titling to front cover; containing 113 original photographs including 90 large-format gelatin-silver prints most about 22cm x 29cm ca 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" a few slightly larger or smaller; four folding panoramas and 19 smaller-format portraits 10cm x 7cm ca 4-1/2" x 3". Rubbing to covers; mild staining to some of the mounts occasional surface scuffs to photographs; two of the panoramas have mended tears at folds. Overall a complete well-preserved album with the photographs in generally excellent condition. A complete list of captions translated into English is included. <br /> <br /> The movement for rural collectivization in the Soviet Union began in earnest in the late 1920s and reached its peak in the mid-1930's under the second Five Year Plan. In every Soviet state hundreds of thousands of rural peasants were moved off their own small holdings and relocated to one of the large collective farms kohlkozy or as here to State-run agricultural factories sovkhozy. State-owned farms like the one portrayed in this album operated under somewhat stricter conditions - in the words of one contemporary observer ".it is perhaps incorrect to speak of 'forced' labor in connection with the sovkhozy.but it is quite reasonable to designate this labor as 'militarized'." The fact that this farm was run by the NKVD the Soviet internal security apparatus means its residents were almost certainly present on a punitive or at least rehabilitative basis: as the agency principally responsible for ferreting out and suppressing counter-revolutionary tendencies among the vast Soviet populace the NKVD would have had little other reason to be involved in the operation of an agricultural enterprise. The use of the sovkhoz as a tool of repression especially in the early days of collectivization is well documented: the collective system was coercive and unwelcome to many if not most of the peasants whom it affected. "What is especially dangerous for the stability of the new agricultural system in Soviet Russia - introduced in such a hurry - is the fact that it was put into effect with coercive methods the system being forced on the peasantry and being accompanied by a cruel campaign against the well-to-do peasantry i.e kulaks quoted from Vladimir Timoshenko "The New Agricultural Policy of Soviet Russia" in Journal of Farm Economics v.13 no.2 April 1931.<br /> <br /> To counter some of the negative views of collectivization a large-scale propaganda campaign was initiated and some of the leading Soviet photographers of the period including Georgy Petrusov Evgeny Khaldei V. Teterin Ivan Shagin Arkady Shaikhet among others were employed to present an idealized version of life on the collective farms. The current album clearly intended to convey this sense of the rural ideal was likely produced by the Directors of the Sovkhoz Sergo Ordzhonikidze named ironically for a one-time ally of Stalin's who had been assassinated in the Great Purge for presentation to a regional state official. In more than 100 hand-captioned images the album portrays every aspect of the enterprise from fields of dairy cattle to chicken hatcheries to leisure-hour activities. The workers are uniformly happy and well-fed their surroundings ideally pastoral the machinery clean new and efficient. One can only speculate what conditions prevailed in the absence of a photographer's lens. <br /> <br /> The photographs themselves are clearly professional: technically and compositionally sophisticated they are exemplars of the form produced in an era when the Soviets had raised the photographic arts to a high level in service to their considerable propaganda needs. Of particular interest are numerous interior photographs documenting industrial activities at the farm - maintenance of the boiler rooms and garages; canning operations; the blacksmith's shop etc: even though staged these are extraordinary photographs of a depth and quality one would associate with the flagship Soviet photographic magazines of the period and there were several the most prominent being Sovetskoe Foto which ran from 1926-1977 and USSR in Construction 1930-1941. <br /> <br /> Despite our belief that these images were likely the work of one of the prominent Soviet photo-documentarians of the period attempts to match the images to a known photographer have proved fruitless. Of the names listed above these images most resemble the work of Evgeny Khaldei who would become famous for his photojournalism during the Second World War; but we find no evidence within the album attributing the work to him or any other photographer. Nonetheless a valuable documentation of pre-War Soviet agricultural life and a quite remarkable collection of images. unknown

This plate captures the moon between the first quarter and a full moon. The didactic attached emphasizes the area where the light and shadow meet called the "terminator" and makes note of Copernicus an area of about 56 miles in length and 2 miles deep. A Photograph Album of Early 20th Century London; with a number of images of the River Thames Shipping Mudlarks River Communities etc.
London 1914. Tall Octavo. 24.5cm. Original green cloth over bevelled boards titled "Photographs" in gilt to the lower front cover. 24pp; 48 3" x 4" black and white images in total. Light bumping and scuffing to corners and spine ends cup ring to front board some light scuffing strong and tight. Internally clean with heavy grey card mounting leaves 2 captioned numbered and often dated images per page. Photographs are clear sharp and well composed with no apparent defects or signs of wear. A very good handsome album.<br /> <br /> Photographer unidentified. but clearly at least a gifted amateur this album judging from the numbers on the image captions is one surviving volume of at least two or three. The execution is excellent the composition and subject matter are far beyond the usual "Here's a picture of Big Ben!" genre of London photography; major landmarks are represented Hyde Park Kew The Embankment Cleopatra's Needle etc. but the manner of the photography is more artisitic than purely descriptive. The image of Cleopatra's Needle for example is captioned as such but the focus of the image is a small Edwardian boy in a Norfolk Jacket and knickerbockers lounging across one of the bronze sphinxes. The views of the River Thames in particular elevate this album to degree of historical usefulness; the shipping details including a number of photos taken from the water have effectively preserved vernacular images of the sheer weight and diversity of shipping at a time when the river ports of London were the arguably the most important in the world. Aside from the usual luggers and rowboats there are a number of photos of sail wherries and river barges which for a long period of time were the pre-eminent open water trading and delivery vessels in the UK with wherries and shallow water barges making their way from the enormous larder of East Anglia and the North East down to London. <br /> <br /> Wool potatoes ropetextiles from Manchester steel work from Sheffield and the North West coal from Sunderland and Newcastle all traveled mainly by water right up to the 1940's and in some places later. There were barge crews in the 1960's essentially doing the same jobs in the same vessels that their extended and often clannish families had been doing for 200 years or more. The watermen depicted navigating the Thames' vicious currents in these photos were essentially the same men who carried Pepys Newton and Marlowe backwards and forwards between the palaces of Westminster and the stews bear pits and rookeries of the Surreyside. Where there are clear avenues of industry there are the necessary shadow economies that accompany them; there are a number of images of small ragged children scouring the foreshore or "Mudlarking" as it was known around the breaking wharfs where barges and ships too old and dangerous for use were destroyed for re-usable lumber and fittings. A bag of copper nails or a few salvaged shackles even salvaged rope could be enough to get a few pennies at the back door of Pocock's bargebuilders down near Rotherhithe. <br /> <br /> In contrast to these off the beaten track images of industry and poverty there are also depictions of the more fortunate wandering around Hyde Park or Kew visiting the Palace or St. James Park. Also present in a slightly forboding fashion is an image of Graham White's biplane flight at Hendon on July 11th 1914 only 17 days before the opening of hostilities in WW1 an event which would quickly transform aviation from a public spectacle of wonder to the pre-eminent weapon of 20th century warfare. The fact that these images were all taken on the very brink of a conflict that would change every aspect of what they depict is sobering; the UK lost almost a million military casualties during the conflict meaning that a very significant number of the men and boys in these images would be dead within a handful of years of them being photographed. Fine in the fragile printed mylar dustwrapper complete but slightly rubbed and scratched; Very Good.<br /> <br /> Somewhat uncommon cloth edition of this experimental pastiche of Carpenter's aphoristic writings and Heyman's documentary photographs. Heyman b. 1930 is perhaps best known as Margaret Mead's long-time collaborator and co-author with her of the books Family and World Enough. Carpenter was a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology and a frequent collaborator with Marshall McLuhan to whose work the current volume clearly owes a debt. Mild external creasing and soil; pencil note to front cover "from Leslie / Sept 11th 1932"; another faint pencil annotation to rear wrapper indecipherable; else clean and unmarked Very Good. <br /> <br /> Reproduces thirty official U.S. War Department and Signal Corps photographs all being battlefield photos of atrocities from the European theatre in WW1. Most are extremely graphic images of dead and mutilated soldiers the only text being brief captions providing sardonic commentary: "Abandoned;" "Decapitated;" "Asphyxiated;" "Where Children Played;" "The Price They Paid" etc. Issued without date or attribution nor has our research uncovered any definitive bibliographical data but the pamphlet was clearly intended to generate anti-war sentiment. Date uncertain; most OCLC records suggest a 1920s date but we suspect the pamphlet was issued later probably around the penciled date on front cover to discourage further American entanglements in the European conflict then just predictable on the far horizon. unknown

Probably ca. 1890s. i.e. certainly before 1905. 1890. Folio. 14 x 15.5 inches. 48 original mounted professional photographs each a full-page image. Modern half red morocco cloth. A piece of the original cloth cover with the title in German as shown is mounted within the volume. Fine. 48 fine vintage photographs 23 of which are signed by the photograph 19 by the Zangaki Brothers; 4 by Antoine Beoto. The images are taken in the southern Egyptian Luxor region including images of the Valley of the Kings at Luxor temple the Nile Karnak temple and Thebes. / The first photograph shows the Sphynx and in front are a couple presumedly a husband & wife perhaps German or Swiss-German obviously tourists. This is their memory album of a visit to Luxor in southern Egypt the place of the Valley of the Kings. The photographs some of which are titled are chiefly titled in French. Even though 23 of the photographs are signed it is clear that the whole album is made up of images from these two photographers meaning that 47 of the images should be either by the Zangaki Brothers or Antoine Beoto's studio. The only unique image should be the first one showing the two travelers and their guides. Probably ca. 1890s. [i.e., certainly before 1905]. hardcover
