1920s Alaska Photo Album with Nice Images of Juneau and Kodiak
Softcover. Very good. 7" x 11" strong-tied photograph album containing 35 snapshots 3.5" x 5" corner-mounted one per page rectos only. A small album without captions but with good documentary content. The first two images are a nice Juneau street scene and a shot of the Alaska Air Transport Terminal in the Juneau harbor. These are followed by some rural scenes showing country roads and houses that we suspect are outside Juneau and several shots of a terminal where cargo is being either loaded from rail car to ship or vice versa. From there three shots show a ship's passage presumably across the Gulf of Alaska from Juneau to Kodiak as the remainder of the images 20 seem to be from Kodiak. There are several nice images of the Kodiak dock and harbor several of a rural road and house a view looking down at the town from a hillside and many shots of the beautiful Russian Orthodox church. unknown

Leaves chipping at the edges with some loss.</p><p>Photograph album documenting a trip by three 20-something white American men to various locations in Mexico shortly before the U.S. entered WWII. The men flew out of El Paso Texas and traveled to Mexico City Taxco Cuernavaca Teotihuaca and other locations. In addition to typical scenes of landmarks buildings etc. the album includes rare glimpses of daily life in Mexico with images of street and market scenes a bullfight landmarks off the beaten path and more.</p> hardcover

<p>7 x 11-3/4 inches. 28 leaves containing 52 b&w photographs and three blue photographs as well as 17pp of holograph poetry written in white on the black leaves and two hand-painted color illustrations. Black hardcover post-bound album stamped in gilt. A few photos starting to come loose else fine. Very Good or better.</p><p>An exquisite photograph album about the travels through Kashmir of one man and two women -- all white possibly British inscribed only to "Auntie Gillmore" -- filled with vernacular photographs of the countryside and local people. Nearly all of the photographs are captioned and the three blue photos appear to be made after the method devised by Frank A. Perrett to photograph volcanoes in the early 1900s rather than being cyanotypes.</p><p>The trio's journey is narrated in rhymed poetry written by the man of the group as revealed on the last page: "The author of the photographs / And also of the paragraphs / Is standing on the Kamri Pass / Complete with alpenstock and glass. / He hears you say 'The verse might be / A little better' but you see / His job lies not in making rhymes / It's more prosaic and the times / When he is bold enough to write / His thoughts in measured words are quite / Rare and few and far between: / Hence all the nonsense you have seen."</p><p>The poetry in this cataloguer's estimation could indeed be better but it nevertheless illuminates the trio's travels which begin in Srinagar and proceed through the Sind Valley and the Kamri Pass. Included are gorgeous shots of Mt. Nanga Parbat Srinigar waterways a market stall a rice barge converted into a houseboat Gurais and much more. Additionally two illustrations one of a flower and one of a pair of colorful hummingbirds have been painted with a deft hand on two leaves.</p><p>A handsomely-produced record of a remarkable journey through 1930s Kashmir.</p> hardcover

A curious photograph depicting what appears to be a white woman sitting in a semicircle on the grass with four boys of different races African American and possibly American Indian all wearing headbands and traditional American Indian-style dress. There are no clues as to why this gathering has taken place or even if these are in fact American Indians or merely a group costumed as such. My hunch is the latter and that perhaps this is a teacher with four students but I will leave the reader to decide. unknown

Very good. Original 6" x 8" black and white photograph on a 10" x 12" mount captioned "Mairposa Co. Exibit" sic and credited "Simon & Robinson Photog." Very good condition blank on the back. Undated but ca. 1915 based on the period when Simon & Robinson were active. Their firm is described in a 1913 promotional book for neighboring Merced County as "especially interested in public affairs and the development of the county." This image was presumably taken at a state or regional agricultural fair and was intended to showcase the bounty produced by Marisposa County farmers. Three long benches and two side tables are shown covered in artfully arranged melons potatoes cucumbers squash corn grapes and other fruit and flowers. unknown

Photograph Album Displaying the Plant Machinery and Production Processes of a Factory in Occupied Japan 1947
Japan Hydrogen Industry Co Ltd. Onahama Fukushima Prefecture Japan 1947. Cloth album 12 x 8.5 inches containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company also known as Nihon Suiso Company which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937 became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. This album produced in 1947 was likely used in an effort to attract American investment. The company was involved in the gasification of pulverized coal producing—depending on the exact process—coal gas water gas or syngas all combustible gases used for municipal lighting and heating prior to the large-scale production of natural gas as well as the production of ammonium sulfate and methanol. The album shows the plant's coke room; gas generators compressors and storage tanks; carbon monoxide converters; pumps for moving chemicals in solution; centrifuges; acid cooling process; ammonium sulphate storage room; and several parts of the methyl alcohol plant boiler turbo generators distiller machine shop storage drums. There is also a view of the entire seaside factory and one of the company's business offices. Over the next few decades Fukushima Prefecture underwent significant industrial development and became Japan's largest energy-supplying region. Whether this album made a specific contribution to that growth by garnering investment we do not know. But it is an interesting artifact of the early stages of the recovery that would become known as the Japanese Economic Miracle. unknown

Contemporary green morocco gilt-stamped lettering and ornament in spine compartments 5 raised bands; 3 volumes 120 x 190 mm; containing a total of 37 silver prints 92 x 140 mm mounted to the recto only of grey heavy cardstock leaves with the name of the studio blindstamped in the lower right corner of the mount. Features one mustachioed gentleman "trying on" different postures identities and costumes in the studio including businessman's attire tuxedos ethnic costume sombrero! swimming costume behold the Speedo!. He flexes his biceps he smokes a cigar -- he WORKS IT for the camera. Spine somewhat sunned; some light scuffing along edges of boards.
