‎Brassai and Alain Sayag (u.a.)‎

‎Brassai. The Monograph. Edited by Alain Sayag and Annick Lionel-Marie. A Bulfinch Press Book.‎

‎Little, Brown and Comp.; Boston, NY, London, 2000. 319 Seiten; sehr zahlr. Illustr. (auch farbig); 31 cm; fadengeh. Orig.-Leinenband mit illustr. OUmschlag.‎

‎Gutes Exemplar; Umschlag stw. berieben. - Englisch. - Brassaï (* 9. September 1899 in Kronstadt (Österreich-Ungarn); ? 8. Brassaï selber sagte dazu: There are many photographs which are full of life but which are confusing and difficult to remember. It is the force of an image which matters. ? ‎Paris de Nuit‎

‎Paris: Edition Arts et Métiers Graphiques 1933. Former owner's innocuous book plate signature that reads "Brassai" but likely not in the photographer's hand light edge creases to the bottom corners gently handled with minor wear; a solid very good copy lacking serious defects in photo-illustrated spiral-bound wrappers. First Edition. Spiral bound quarto sixty-four gravure plates. The best-known and most iconic of the great Paris photobooks printed in a deep gravure so tactile it seems almost as if charcoal will rub off on the hands of the viewer. The cobblestone covers and endpapers are particularly evocative. Parr / Badger v1 134; Roth 76-77. Paris: Edition Arts et Métiers Graphiques unknown books‎

Language: French. Hardback with DJ. Brassaï became interested in photography as a way to record encounters on his nightly walks through the streets of Paris. He enjoyed these long strolls after dark and began carrying a camera and tripod in 1929. He compiled these photographs in a book entitled Paris de nuit. A collection of black and white images that juxtaposed luminous dreamlike nightscapes with contemporary documentary images of the nighttime's denizens. "Night does not show things it suggests them. It disturbs and surprises us with its strangeness." Brassaï's subjects are not only aware of the photographer they collaborate with him. His unique style gave Paris de nuit its distinctive intimacy and was a revelation for his artist friends. Fellow night owl Henry Miller wrote: "Brassaï is a living eye.his gaze pierces straight to the heart of truths in everything." Brassaï was at ease with all types of people and this played an important role in his photography. In the course of his nighttime perambulations he befriended pimps and streetwalkers hoodlums and laborers who allowed him to photograph freely among them. He was equally accepted photographing nude showgirls backstage at the Folies Begere as he was photographing prostitutes and their clients at Chez Suzy. Paris by Night was also a technical achievement. In an era of slow lenses and even slower filmBrassï relished the darkness and by trial and error learned to get the night shots he was after. Using his training as a painter Brassaï framed his shots so that small areas of light pierced large areas of blacks and shadows. Light reflected in wet streets and diffused by fog would define shapes within the dark. This contrast gave his printed images richness and depth and he called these prints his "little boxes of night." Arts et Metiers Graphiques , hardcover‎

Although he disliked photography at the time he found it necessary to use it in his journalistic assignments and soon came to appreciate the medium's unique aesthetic qualities. In his remarkable oeuvre of photographs Brassai imbues even the most inanimate images with a warm sense of human life. The present early collection of drawings shows the artist honing his eye through keen observation of detail and nuance precisely the qualities which would inform the work for which he is today best remembered. <br style=""> hardcover books‎

Large folio six loose sheets and ten duotone plates as issued in original tan wrappers. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box. $3200.Limited first edition unnumbered one of only 265 copies an exceptional portfolio collection of ten striking exhibition-size duotones after photographs by Louis Stettner inscribed by him in French on the dedication leaf in the year of publication “à le Sheriff. Avec Â… unclear Louis Stettner Paris Oct 22 1949.”Praised by Brassaï as a photographer who reveals the world “with utmost accuracy and the simplicity of great art” Early Joys Brooklyn-born Louis Stettner is “a consummate street photographer in the Cartier-Bresson Atget and well Weegee tradition” New York Times. This impressive group of ten Stettner exhibition-size duotones rarely found complete contains finely composed images of silent streets and edgy urban portraiture—work that made Stettner a foundational touchstone for Robert Frank William Klein and others. A leader in the humanist tradition that is at the core of his lifework Stettner was widely praised for renouncing “his personality his ‘IÂ’ with its little fads and immense pretensions. Henceforth he will live under the authority of reality and will dedicate his existence to the cult of its images.” His photographs are part of the permanent collections in New YorkÂ’s Metropolitan Museum and MoMA and museums around the world. Text by Brassaï in French and English translation. Duotones fresh and clean rarely found in such fine condition; very lightest edge-wear to fragile wrappers. An exceptional about-fine work. unknown‎

‎BRASSAI, & Paul Morand.‎

‎Paris de Nuit.‎

‎Paris: Édition Arts et Métiers Graphiques 1933 1932. A superb copy inscribed by author and photographer First edition first printing of the photographer's first publication double presentation copy inscribed by Morand on the first page of text "à Pierre Cot Voici un joli décor pour La Patriouille etc. Chut! chut! chut! tres fideliement P. Morand Paris fev. 32" and further inscribed by Brassaï across the following two pages "Pour Christian-Vincent Matorasso ce Paris de Nuit perdu et retrouvé avec toute ma sympathie Brassai Ete Village le 7 mai 1965". The first recipient Pierre Cot 1895-1977 was a politician central to the establishment of the French Air Force and later of Air France. Morand's inscription alludes to La Patriouille a display wing of the air force the French equivalent of the British Red Arrows. Pasted below Morand's inscription is a small photograph of Brassaï in later life which probably relates to the photographer's subsequent inscription. This is a superb copy of the work in which Brassaï showcases his mastery "at drawing luminosity from the darkness. The swaths of wet paving stones featured on the covers and endpapers of Paris de Nuit gleam like pale beacons in the streetlight. Inside Brassaï explores the city beginning with its broad vistas and grand public spaces and gradually moving into the demimonde he knew so intimately" Roth p. 76. It remains one of the most influential photobooks; signed copies are rare and copies inscribed by both author and photographer rarer still. Quarto. Illustrated with 62 full-page gravure plates and 2 double-page plates as endpapers. Spiral bound monochrome photographic wrappers front cover lettered in red. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. A few punch holes slightly worn covers lightly creased and rubbed at extremities a few pages faintly soiled. A very good copy of a notoriously fragile book. Parr & Badger I p. 134; Roth p. 76. unknown‎

The back alleys Metro stations and bistros he photographed are by turns hauntingly empty or peopled by prostitutes laborers thugs and lovers.
