Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat août 1952 20.80 x 34 cm 52 pages Autograph manuscript by Jean Cocteau early version of the poetry collection Appogiatures - published in 1953 by Éditions du Rocher in Monaco - comprising 47 leaves of thick paper taken from a large drawing pad and 5 smaller leaves of thin paper written in blue ink and blue ballpoint pen. Numerous deletions and corrections. The leaves are numbered up to 25 including one number 8 bis and most bear a small cross or the mythical Cocteau star. The last leaf containing the poem titled ""Lettre"" is dated in the poet's hand August 15 1952. Also in Cocteau's hand the first leaf bears the final title above which is crossed out the initially envisaged title - Soucoupes volantes - the date 1952 and the place - St Jean Cap Ferrat; it also features a crossed-out dedication: ""À la mémoire de Baudelaire et de Max Jacob qui nous apprirent ces exercices de style."" While the collection clearly shows the influence of Baudelaire's Petits Poèmes en prose and Max Jacob's Le Cornet à dés this tribute was not retained in the published version and was replaced by a dedication to the publisher Henri Parisot. An exceptional ensemble containing 33 of the 51 published poems 11 texts rejected on the advice of publisher Henri Parisot and published in ""En marge d'Appogiatures"" ÂŒuvres poétiques complètes de la Pléiade pp. 818-831 and 6 unpublished texts. David Gullentops in the edition of Jean Cocteau's ÂŒuvres poétiques complètes in the Pléiade notes the existence of a second set of manuscripts and typescripts preserved at the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris BHVP. He further indicates that he had access to no manuscript of the poem ""Lanterne sourde."" Yet this poem is indeed part of our ensemble which would thus be the first version of the collection envisioned by Cocteau. Jean Cocteau began writing this collection of poems in verse and prose commissioned by his friend the publisher Henri Parisot at the end of July 1952 while staying at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in Francine Weisweiller's Villa Santo-Sospir. The first version of the collection was completed in mid-August as attested by the two dates on our manuscript ""août 1952"" and ""15 août 1952"" and this entry in Cocteau's diary: ""J'ai terminé la mise au point des courts poèmes en prose pour Parisot. Il y en aura vingt-six à moins que le mécanisme continue ce que je ne souhaite pas car à la longue ces exercices d'écriture illustrés par Baudelaire et Max Jacob fatiguent."" Le Passé défini Tome 1 1951-1952 August 14 1952. Our ensemble would thus be a mixture of the first poems sent to Henri Parisot written with a pen and several added texts written with a ballpoint pen. This hypothesis is supported by the writing of the final title Appogiatures on the title page of our manuscript; Cocteau relates this change again in his diary dated August 29 1952: ""Ai . classé les poèmes pour Parisot sous le titre : Appogiatures."" Our early manuscript version contains significant variants concerning the titles of the poems; thus the poem ""Livre de bord"" was initially titled ""Le Spectacle"" likewise for ""Au poil"" for which Cocteau had previously chosen ""La langue française"" or ""Le tableau noir"" originally titled ""Le lièvre et la tortue."" The order of the poems was also considerably modified for printing: our ensemble shows that Cocteau wished to begin the collection with ""Le voyageur"" which would finally be replaced by ""Seul"" and moved to second position. Also noteworthy in our dossier is the presence of eight poems entirely in verse: these would be removed Appogiatures becoming a collection exclusively in prose. The ensemble heavily deleted and corrected also presents long passages suppressed in the published version for example this very beautiful extract from the poem ""Scène de ménage"" evoking the ""countess"" Francine Weisweiller: ""Et les larmes de la comtesse se disaient : nous sommes la mer. Angora - Ankara]. Jean-Baptiste Annibal Aubert du Bayet (19 August 1759, Louisiana - 17 December 1797, Istanbul) was a French General and politician during the period of the French Revolution. Aubert du Bayet was born in Baton-Rouge in the French American colony of Louisiana in 1759. Aubert du Bayet participated in the campaigns in America during the American Revolutionary War. Aubert du Bayet arrived in France at the beginning of the Revolution, but was initially hostile to revolutionary ideas. While in Metz, as a young Captain, he published an anti-Jewish pamphlet entitled Le cri du citoyen contre les Juifs. However, he soon saw that it could serve his ambitions. He became a member of the legislature in 1791. Aubert du Bayet was President of the French National Assembly (the "Legislative Assembly") from 8 July 1792 to 22 July 1792. In 1793, he served as General of Brigade in the heroic defense of Mayence in 1793, when he finally had to surrender to the Prussian Army. He then seconded Hoche in Vendée in the fight against the Chouans in the War in the Vendée. He then became Minister of Defense of France ("Minister of War") from 3 November 1795 to 8 February 1796. In 1796, General Aubert du Bayet was appointed as ambassador ("Minister of the Republic") to the Ottoman Empire. He was sent to the Ottoman court with artillery equipment, and French artillerymen and engineers to help with the development of the Ottoman arsenals and foundries. Infantry and cavalry officers were also to train the Spahis and Janissaries, but they were frustrated by the opposition of the Janissaries. Ironically, some of these troops, trained to Western methods, were successfully employed against the French troops of Napoleon a few years later under Sir Sydney Smith at the Siege of Saint-Jean d'Acre in 1799. Their behaviour delighted Selim III, and upon their return, they were named Nizam-gedittes or "New Regulars", but they were eventually slaughtered and dispersed by the Janissaries and conservative clerics and politicians, leading to the deposition of Selim III. Aubert du Bayet died of fever in 1797, in Constantinople. Co-signed by six politic figures in its period, however, they cannot be determined. Very rare.‎

Deletions and corrections. The article published in 1957 was reproduced in 1965 in Situations 7 Problèmes de marxisme 2. In this article Sartre protests against the prefectural ban on performing La Reine de Césarée by Robert Brasillach under pressure from resistance fighters deportees and children of deportees and against police pressures exerted against theatrical plays by Fabre-Luce and Jean Genet. Interesting drafts in which the philosopher invites M. Ginsburgh to stage Le Balcon himself: ""Mais puisqu'il ne dément rien de ce que j'ai dit je me borne pour l'instant à considérer sa lettre comme une confirmation tacite de mon article. Par reste M. Ginsburgh a l'occasion de me confondre avec éclat : que ne monte-t-il pas le Balcon Ce n'est pas un défi c'est une proposition honnête : si le Balcon est joué sur la scène du théâtre d'Aujourd'hui je ferai ici même des excuses à M. Ginsburgh et au directeur de l'Alliance Française."" ""But since he does not deny anything I have said I limit myself for now to considering his letter as a tacit confirmation of my article. Furthermore M. Ginsburgh has the opportunity to confound me brilliantly: why doesn't he stage Le Balcon This is not a challenge it is an honest proposition: if Le Balcon is performed on the stage of the Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui I will make apologies here to M. Ginsburgh and to the director of the Alliance Française."" Fabre-Luce himself seems to have also written to Sartre after the publication of the article: ""Pour M. La préfecture de police elle qui devait être au courant de ce succès craignait pour M. Fabre-Luce. On voudrait connaître les origines de cette touchante sollicitude. Ce qui compte c'est beau."" ‎Né en 1892 dans une famille juive hassidime croyante et cultivée dans une petite ville d’Ukraine théâtre de pogroms, Josué Jéhouda part à 13 ans pour Vienne, puis pour Genève, à la recherche du « Royaume de Justice » pour les Juifs. En 1902, il est secrétaire du comité Pro Causa Judaïca, à Zurich, et œuvre pour le sionisme jusqu’à la déclaration de Balfour en 1917. Devenu journaliste, il est à partir de 1920 accrédité à la Société des Nations comme journaliste pour la presse juive. Il édite un cycle de romans et de 1923 à 1948, fonde et dirige la « Revue juive de Genève » à l’audience internationale. Il publie environ 200 articles entre 1932 et 1945 où il expose sa conception de la modernité du judaïsme en mettant l’accent sur l’unité des religions monothéistes. ‎Belle lettre sur Marseille : Il le remercie de l'envoi de son ouvrage: "Les Chants du port" - Il l'a lu avec d'autant plus attention qu'il a "fait à Marseille un bref séjour..qui [lui] a laissé un émerveillement" dont il ne s'est toujours pas remis - Il l'aime "entre toutes", mais il l'a "si peu connue" - Or "il faut vivre, pleurer et souffrir et jouir aussi d'une grande villeaux aspects si changeants" - Cela prends des années - Grâce à lui, il a revu en souvenirs tous ces quartiers - "J'avais néammoins deviné, sous le soleil, ces poignantes misères populaires" - Il lui reproche seulement quelques longueurs: "un peu de briéveté ne nuit jamais au dessin fermes de types ou de personnages" - Il a bien fait "de fixer certains aspects de Marseille la changeante" - On ne sait pas "quel tour va prendre, a déjà pris demain" - Il lui souhaite de trouver un éditeur pour son interessant récit -‎

‎Remarquable exemplaire enrichi d'une jaquette peinte et dédicacée "à mon grand et toujours petit René, en souvenir de sa chère Maman" par "le pauvre vieux orphelin". Né au Havre le 14 avril 1903 de père inconnu, légitime par son père adoptif sous le nom d'Ernest Coquin, il se réfugiera auprès de ses grands-parents paysans, à Robertot, en pays de Caux, lorsqu'il devient orphelin au seuil de l'adolescence. Romancier et conteur, Ernest Eugène Coquin sera notamment maire de Robertot de 1945 jusqu'à sa mort en 1970. Bon état pour cet exemplaire unique !‎
